At the conclusion of the [[Battle of Voi]], with the [[Prophet of Truth]] activating the [[Artifact]] and the Covenant fleet escaping to the [[Ark]], a Flood-infected Covenant cruiser appeared out of [[Slipspace]], having penetrated the Elite's blockade of High Charity and crash-landed at the city of [[Voi]] in an effort to spread. When Master Chief engaged the flood forms, they seemed to have thicker skin and a hard exoskeleton. It is possible that when High Charity was captured by the Gravemind, the Flood evolved these new forms in preperation for the attack on Earth and to begin to form into a more combat based stage of flood development. This seems to be confirmed by a Spec-Op Elite as he explains to the Arbiter that the Flood have "evolved". In order to prevent the Flood from spreading and infecting the entire planet, [[Miranda Keyes]] ordered John-117 to overload and detonate the cruiser's reactors, causing the city of Voi to be destroyed and the Flood there to be sterilized. As John-117 and the [[Thel 'Vadam]] fought their way toward the ship, the [[Shadow of Intent]] arrived and deployed a small Sangheili task force to aid UNSC ~~marines~~. SPARTAN-117, with the help of the Sangheili, was able to battle through the Flood forces, including the newly encountered Flood [[Pure Form]]s to reach the crashed cruiser where he ~~found~~ a message from [[Cortana]].
