The UNSC Monte Cassino is a destroyer in service with the UNSC Navy after the Human-Covenant War.[1] As of January 2553, the ship's executive officer is Commander Cerny.[2]

Background[edit]

On January 2553, the UNSC Ariadne experienced reactor complications and was forced to drop out of slipspace near Venezia. Having received no assistance from the Insurrectionist-controlled colony, Ariadne sent a message to Earth asking for help. Two days later the Monte Cassino was dispatched - both to evacuate the ship's crew and to rendezvous with the UNSC Port Stanley for a personnel transfer. Slipspace time dilation effects caused a five-hour delay, however - the reactor exploded before any help could arrive, and the Ariadne was lost with all hands.

The Monte Cassino then conducted search-and-rescue operations in Venezia's orbit, but the ship was fired upon by paranoid ground forces with a Covenant T-38 "Tyrant" anti-air cannon. The ship evaded fire and easily destroyed the cannon with missiles. Prior to the Monte Cassino's return trip to Earth, the Port Stanley transferred ONI operative Mike Spenser and civilian Tom Muir to the ship.

Trivia[edit]

Monte Cassino is a location in southern Italy, and was the site of a famous World War II battle.
