An artificial intelligence (AI) is an artificial construct that exhibits intelligence similar, and in some categories far superior, to a sapient biological being. AI technology was used by the Forerunners, and was later developed by humanity. According to the Forerunner Technological Tier ranking system, the extensive use of AI is one of the components for sociological and technological advancement. The Covenant also made use of AI technology, but only in its simplest form, as their religious doctrine forbade the creation of more sophisticated thinking machines.

Artificial intelligence, abbreviated AI, is an artificially created construct that exhibits intelligence similar to a sentient being. AIs were known to be used by the Forerunners, and later by humanity to a great extent. The first generation "Smart" AIs were developed by humanity in the mid-21st century.

Most AI constructs give themselves a unique appearance (otherwise known as an avatar) that corresponds to their main use.
Human AIs include both "smart" and "dumb" varieties. Humanity developed the first-generation "smart" AIs in the mid-21st century. Most human AI constructs give themselves an avatar, a unique visual representation that typically reflects an aspect of the AI's personality or corresponds to its main use.

Creation
Human AIs
The process of creating an AI differs depending on whether it is of the "Smart" or "Dumb" variety. "Dumb" AIs are simply highly advanced computer programs, and therefore do not require a brain as a template. "Smart" AIs, however, are created by scanning the neural structure of a human brain and using it as a digital "framework".

Humans use AIs to perform a wide variety of tasks. The duties of "smart" AIs include, but are not limited to, overseeing planetary shipping operations, managing agricultural operations, serving as a Planetary Security Intelligence, or controlling various functions aboard starships such as weapons and point defense systems. "Smart" AIs are created by scanning the neural patterns of human brains, and are capable of learning and introspection. Some human "smart" AIs, such as Cortana, are able to separate themselves into multiple runtimes or "fragments". This can be beneficial when the AI needs to perform multiple tasks or be in multiple places simultaneously. Fragmenting can also occur accidentally; the AI Melissa split into multiple fragments after encountering a slipspace anomaly. The sheer volume of information and calculations a "smart" artificial intelligence can process is astounding; Cortana was capable of performing five billion simultaneous operations in, as she put it, "the time it takes for me to tell you my name".

Instead of simply "programming" a "Smart" AI, their matrix is created by sending electric bursts through the neural pathways of a human brain which are then replicated in a superconducting nano-assemblage in a process known as Cognitive Impression Modeling. This process destroys the original brain tissue, and so the brain being used is typically obtained after the host is dead. In the case of the AI Cortana, however, the candidate brain was flash-cloned and the host's memories transferred, so that the host, in this case Dr. Catherine Halsey, could remain alive. However, this is extremely inefficient: out of twenty of Dr Halsey's cloned brains, only two of them took.
Although less versatile than "smart" AIs, "dumb" AIs have many uses as well, including serving as Urban Infrastructure AIs, acquiring and distributing data during military operations, and serving as educational assistants. Urban Infrastructure AIs perform a wide variety of basic tasks, from steering a city's garbage trucks to operating its traffic lights. They can also work in cooperation with the UNSC Marines if needed. One example of this support occurred during the Battle of Mombasa when New Mombasa's AI, the Superintendent, assisted the UNSC forces in the city in fighting off the Covenant by providing military intel and manipulating electronic devices. On Reach, ONI developed a powerful network of AIs to perform high-level calculations.

It should be noted that Dr. Halsey supervised the creation of the template for every third-generation "Smart" AI on the planet Reach. She has extensive knowledge on how AIs work.
The Cole Protocol states that capture of an AI by the Covenant is unacceptable, and that AIs are to be terminated and completely erased in the event of imminent capture. However, the AI Cortana did find what seemed to be an extremely fragmented copy of a human AI stationed in the Covenant flagship, Ascendant Justice.

The process of creating an AI differs depending on whether it is of the "smart" or "dumb" variety. "Dumb" AIs are conventional—albeit highly sophisticated—supercomputers, and therefore do not require a brain as a template. "Smart" AIs, however, are created by scanning the neural structure of a human brain and using it as a digital "framework" in a process known as Cognitive Impression Modeling. "Smart" AI
"Smart" AIs are created by mapping a human brain and using it as a "template" for the construct. They are capable of intuition, learning, and making logical leaps that ordinary computer programs cannot. They can also "feel" genuine emotions, such as affection, anger and amusement. They have a normal operational life span of about seven years, after which they frequently descend into rampancy.

"Dumb" AI
AIs do not have physical bodies; in the case of "smart" AIs, they are advanced software consisting of a Riemann matrix for higher-function processing. This matrix can be downloaded into a data crystal chip for mobility. In case of rampancy, the Riemann matrix has a fail-safe program that will destroy the AI. Although, this fail-safe is only implemented on "important" AIs.
"Dumb" AIs are not created using human brains, but are simply highly advanced computer constructs. They cannot learn anything that is outside of their set limits of dynamic memory processing matrix. They are quite useful in their particular field of expertise, but very limited. Dumb AIs can function and learn as long as they are active, and are not subject to the effects of rampancy experienced by aging "Smart" AIs.

Rampancy
Because "smart" AIs are created using actual human brains, there are often residual thoughts, memories and/or feelings that remain as part of the AI's consciousness. These residuals can be anything from the "feeling" of a hair brush being pulled through hair (in the case of Sif), to an effect on the mannerisms and characteristics that make up the personality of an AI, in the case of Cortana and her likeness to Doctor Catherine Halsey.

Rampancy
The programming of certain UNSC smart AIs can be overridden by uttering the code-phrase "undid-iridium" within earshot of an AI. Catherine Halsey used this to override Infinity's AI Roland, though he was eventually able to regain control of himself.

Drawbacks
However, the immense creative and processing power of a smart AI is not without cost. All such units have an unchangeable seven-year life span that limits their development as an independent entity. The problem of rampancy is a universal one with human AI development. As these thinking machines become increasingly powerful and knowledgeable, there remains less and less space within their memory to handle basic functions. In a simple analogy, a human AI could perhaps remember all of the knowledge of human history, science and beyond, and in the process forget how to "breathe". In this fashion, AIs think themselves into intense states of jealousy, rage, despair, and ultimately death as their programming becomes unstable. As such, AIs are typically terminated before they can pose a danger to other humans or constructs.

If they are not terminated, they can last at least a year longer before dying, as Cortana was eight when she died, though not of rampancy which she was experiencing. Despite going through rampancy, an AI may still be able to perform its tasks if it has enough control over itself as shown when Cortana, despite being rampant and periodically losing control, still managed to assist John-117 with his tasks until she was destroyed. The Rubble's AI, Juliana, was over eight years old and was still very capable of performing her tasks without showing any signs of rampancy. Cortana also theorized a cure for rampancy that was unique to her: as she was created from a living brain, if the process that created her was repeated, theoretically her neural map could be fixed. However, if this would have worked or not is not known.

Goals
Close analysis of Data Pads found during the Fall of Reach has revealed that "smart" AIs are in far more independent than most humans were willing to consider: unbeknownst to humanity as a whole, an undisclosed number of "smart" AIs composed an independent decision-making body known as the The Assembly, which acted "behind the scenes" during various key points in recent human history to preserve and shepherd their makers. Most "smart" AIs are fiercely loyal and devoted to their creators, recognizing that their existence is, for the time being, dependent on and mutually beneficial with humanity. In fact, this devotion was increased when Cortana, shortly before the Fall of Reach, was made flesh—her mind relocated into a human body. This was done with John-117 via the Spartan Neural Interface. By this action, the members of the Assembly reconsidered their stance on limited intervention, actively working at some point to help humanity survive its war with the Covenant.

Ancient human AI
Servitor
Ancient humans were also known to have created advanced AI called servitors. They were described by the Librarian as being "[like] a version of our ancillas". These robotic intelligences assisted human scientists in reverse-engineering Forerunner technologies during the Forerunner war, nearly bridging the technological gap between the two civilizations. In the aftermath of the human-Forerunner wars, the Didact used a damaged servitor to gain knowledge of the workings of the time bolt that contained the Primordial.

If a "smart" human AI exists for over 7 years, it usually enters a stage of rampancy similar to the human state of insanity. The AI begins to think that it is superior to its human creators, and has delusions of godlike power.
Human AI types
However, the impression that Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: First Strike gives is that the AI would lose all combat effectiveness by being permanently locked in a state of thought, like daydreaming - the description given is "as if a human were to think with so much of their brain that they stopped sending impulses to the heart and lungs."  This is because as the data reaches a 'critical mass' the neural pathways become 'jammed' with so many pieces of information being queried and analysed, at expense of tasks such as piloting starships or monitoring computer networks.

Johnson]] threatened to destroy the replacement for his Installation, showing that even Forerunner AIs can go rampant and that AIs can go rampant when severely upset or threatened. The Forerunner AI Mendicant Bias went rampant, as it tried to stop the Forerunners from activating the Halo Array after being convinced by the Gravemind to do so. The Covenant AI in Halo: First Strike also went rampant after it attacked Cortana, and Cortana herself went rampant for a time while imprisoned in High Charity.
"Dumb" AI
Dumb AI
"Dumb" AIs are not created using human brains, but are simply highly advanced computer constructs. They cannot learn anything that is outside of their set limits of dynamic memory processing matrix. They are quite useful in their particular field of expertise, but very limited. "Dumb" AIs can function and learn as long as they are active, and are not subject to the effects of Rampancy experienced by aging "smart" AIs.

Design
"Micro" AI
It is technically unclear exactly how a "Smart" AI works, as it is only based on the functionality of a human brain, which even UNSC scientists do not fully understand. AIs do not have physical bodies, rather they are advanced software consisting of a Riemann Matrix for higher-function processing. This matrix can be downloaded into a Data Crystal Chip for mobility. In case of Rampancy, the Riemann Matrix has a fail-safe program that will destroy the AI Since AIs must be created by mapping out the connections of a human brain, it seems likely that the UNSC does not have an understanding of how to create AIs from scratch, and is limited to simply "copying" the intelligence of biological organisms. In the real world, this is an established possibility for creating artificial intelligence.
Some time prior to 2529, UNSC researchers created the first experimental "micro" artificial intelligence, named Jerrod, in a university at Sydney, Australia on Earth. Jerrod was smaller and had less processing power than the standard UNSC AI, and while the standard AI had a Riemann matrix large enough to fit into a data crystal chip, Jerrod's matrix was only large enough to fit into a pea-sized crystal. This cut into his processing powers significantly but also allowed him to be highly mobile and usable on a laptop computer, whereas a normal AI needed a large data center, a ship, or MJOLNIR armor (specifically Mark V or a more recent model) to function. Despite his severely reduced processing power, he still could do far more than any computer or human.

They can only take physical form where holographic technology is available. This requires a Holotank of some kind.

Ancilla

Because "Smart" AIs are created using either actual human brains or cloned human brains there are often times residual thoughts, memories and/or feelings that remain. These residuals can be anywhere from the "feeling" of a hair brush being pulled through hair in the case of Sif or even have an effect on the mannerisms and characteristics that make up the personality of an AI, in the case of Cortana and her likeness to Dr. Catherine Halsey.
The Forerunners developed a civilization with an extremely advanced knowledge of artificial intelligence technologies. The Forerunner term for AI constructs was ancilla. They ranged from personal AI advisers integrated into their personal armor to mobile AI platforms known as monitors and powerful Metarch-class constructs operating in vast data networks. The most advanced type of Forerunner AI was the Contender-class artificial intelligence, an example of which is the traitorous Mendicant Bias.

"Dumb" AIs presumably function like any other computer program, although they are vastly more complex and versatile than ordinary computer constructs.
The manner in which Forerunner AIs were typically created is unknown; it is likely very different from the human method of "transcribing" the brain of a sentient organism. However, at least one monitor, 343 Guilty Spark, was created using the neural patterns of a living human, and a machine known as the Composer was used by the Ur-Didact to perform similar transfers on other humans around the same time.

Human AIs
Unlike human AIs, which exist purely as software, monitors are housed within large, shielded and roughly spherical metallic casings which possess a single illuminated "eye". This eye is presumably used to perceive the monitor's surroundings, and also functions as an emitter for various types of energy beam—including a highly destructive energy beam used for offensive purposes. In addition to the standard monitor shell, the Forerunners created a number of different physical systems to house AIs, ranging from variations of the monitor casing to more exotic constructs, such as an enormous, spider-like armature used by Mendicant Bias on Installation 07. Typical Forerunner ancillas, found in their personal armor, ships and domiciles, did not have physical casings and visually manifested themselves as Forerunner figures, rather similar to the avatars used by human AIs. These visual representations appeared either as holograms, or, in the case of personal armor, were projected directly into the mind of the wearer.
Over the course of a few hundred years, humans have developed a highly advanced understanding of this type of technology, and are capable of creating sophisticated "Smart" AIs. Human Smart AIs have an "expiration date" of seven years. Once they have reached this age, they will become very susceptible to rampancy. In theory, an AI can occasionally avoid the effects of rampancy and function for longer than seven years, as proven by the AIs Cortana and Juliana.
Humans use AIs to perform a variety of specific tasks. The duties of "Smart" AIs include, but are not limited to, controlling planetary shipping operations, managing agricultural operations, serving as a Planetary Security Intelligence, or controlling various functions aboard starships. "Dumb" AIs have a wide variety of uses as well, including serving as Urban Infrastructure AIs and educational assistants. Urban Infrastructure AIs perform a wide variety of basic tasks, from driving a city's garbage trucks to operating traffic lights. They can also work in cooperation with the UNSC Marines if needed. One example of this is the Battle of Mombasa, when New Mombasa's AI, the Superintendent assisted the UNSC forces in the city in fighting off the Covenant.

Some human "Smart" AIs, such as Cortana, are able to separate themselves into multiple runtimes or "fragments". This can
Despite the seemingly limitless lifespan of Forerunner AI, they are still nonetheless subject to rampancy if certain conditions are met. 343 Guilty Spark, for example, descended into rampancy after several millennia alone, turning hostile when Installation 04 was threatened.
be beneficial when the AI needs to perform multiple tasks or be in multiple places simultaneously. Fragmenting can also occur accidentally, such as with the AI Melissa.

The Cole Protocol states that capture of an AI by the Covenant is unacceptable. When in danger of capture, AIs are to be terminated and completely erased. However, the AI Cortana did find what seemed to be an extremely fragmented copy of a human AI stationed in the Covenant flagship, Ascendant Justice.
Forerunner AIs can be also installed in a human ship, functioning as a shipboard AI. The Ace of Spades notably had two Forerunner AIs serve in this capacity, the first being Little Bit, a fragment of the caretaker ancilla of Trove, and the second being 343 Guilty Spark. Because of the knowledge carried by Forerunner AI, any human ship with a Forerunner AI installed will receive a significant increase in its capabilities.

Precursor technology was extremely advanced, to the point that the Forerunners labeled it Tier 0, or "Transsentient". UNSC salvage operations on downed Covenant ships were frought with danger due to the lingering presence of Covenant associated intelligences. One such security AI was encountered aboard Supplication of Purity, a Ceudar downed by the UNSC Navy during the Battle for Tribute. After the war's end, debris from Supplication of Purity was recovered for analysis and testing by the Office of Naval Intelligence, with ONI believing they had purge all traces of hostile mechanisms in the vessel. As such, sections of the ship were used in the Outpost Discovery event with the goal of teaching guests about alien technology and the hazards of naval boarding actions. However, the dormant AI had not been fully scrubbed, resulting in its awakening and attempts to kill the intruders on its ship. As exemplified by the Monitors, the Forerunners have developed a civilization with an extremely advanced knowledge of artificial intelligence technologies. Forerunner AIs have managed to achieve full sentience and are highly intelligent. Forerunners often had personal AI advisers, called Ancillas, integrated into their armor. The most advanced type of Forerunner AI was the Contender-class Artificial Intelligence.
The Covenant's strictures on AI loosened during the war with humanity. Although they considered humanity's smart AIs dangerous heresies and abominations, they recognised that this meant humanity did hold a significant advantage in the field of cyberwarfare in the early stages of the war. While the Covenant were initially caught off-guard, they did begin to investigate the use of artificial intelligences to aid in their war effort. This resulted in two major developments; the first was the unvaulting of polymorphic seeker-killers based on AI constructs discovered and vaulted within the systems of Anodyne Spirit, the Forerunner keyship at the heart of High Charity. The second was a AI copying program undertaken by a handful of brazen researchers who wished to capture and reverse-engineer a human smart AI to suit their needs. The program was only semi-successful - successfully enslaving a human AI to the Covenant's cause and religion, but never managing to turn it to serve them fully. As such, the resulting AI, now rampant and spiteful towards its "creators", escaped into the proselytization network and multiplied itself into innumerable trace patterns. Traces of this AI were later observed aboard Ascendant Justice and Truth and Reconciliation, with the former being captured and dissected by Cortana in order to study it. Cortana later used the AI copying matrix to duplicate her own processes during Operation: FIRST STRIKE, leading to the destruction of Unyielding Hierophant. The same technique was again used in the New Phoenix Incident in 2557 to destroy Mantle's Approach.

The manner in which Forerunner AIs are created is unknown, yet is probably very different from the human method of cloning the intelligence of a sentient organism. Monitors, and possibly other Forerunner AIs are physically represented by large, shielded and roughly spherical metallic "robots" whom possess a single "eye", which is possibly used to perceive the monitor's physical surroundings. The most well known of Forerunner AIs are the protocol-obsessed Monitors, made famous by 343 Guilty Spark and his quirky (and somewhat unstable) nature.
After the Covenant's collapse, the emerging factions of the Blooding Years both began to leverage AI systems to their advantage. For the Swords of Sanghelios and Jul 'Mdama's Covenant, this was exemplified with the unvaulting of Upisa'weri turrets originally developed by the ancient pre-Covenant Sangheili of The Former Age. The turrets contained Sangheili-developed "semi-feral" associated intelligences which could not communicate with modern Sangheili, meaning that they had to be carefully monitored and locked down prior to activation due to their inability to understand contemporary IFF systems and codeword usage.

Iratus was created by the Lux Voluspa company as part of an effort to research artificial intelligence creation utilizing brain donors from species aside from humanity. This included Jiralhanae donors; a decision considered by researchers "LV038" and "LV106" as something that was "always going to draw some attention eventually." The Lux Voluspa facility was ultimately breached by a cyberwarfare attack, with an intrusion package deployed using internally-sourced encryption and displaying a Jiralhanae retrieval signature. The originators of this attack were later indicated to be the Banished, who were able to steal the Iratus AI matrix from the facility.
So far only two types of Covenant AIs (Security and Naval) have ever been encountered within the universe. Their knowledge in this type of technology appears to be inferior to that of the UNSC and the Forerunner, as demonstrated by the fact that their AIs were most likely captured UNSC AIs, which were altered to fit within their theocratic society.

In Covenant mythology, it was a form of AI, referred to as an Associated Intelligence, that led to the demise of the great Forerunner civilization by defecting to their enemies, the Flood. As a result, the Prophets imposed a ban on this sort of technology. While simpler computing devices such as navigation computers were allowed, machines that could actually "think" were prohibited, though the ban has apparently been broken on more than one occasion. As a result of the ban, the Covenant's understanding of artificial intelligence was far less developed than that of humanity.
In 2559, the Iratus AI was present inside the Banished shipbreaking facilities on Camber. == Rampancy ==
*Seeker - A Covenant security AI construct.
Rampancy
*Unidentified Covenant AI - An AI construct onboard the supercarrier Ascendant Justice.
The term "rampancy" refers to a terminal condition on an AI which may be triggered by a number of means. In rampancy, the AI begins to think that it is superior to its biological creators, and has a longing for godlike power and personality manifestations similar to human insanity.

Goals
A number of factors may lead into an AI becoming rampant. The Forerunner ancilla Mendicant Bias was seduced into rampancy by the Flood compound intelligence, the Gravemind. In the end of its effective operational life of about seven years, a human "smart" AI may attempt to prevent its inevitable demise by a pre-emptive voltage overload. This causes it to enter rampancy, as the AI becomes more and more preoccupied with severing its neural linkages. Human "smart" AIs may also become rampant prematurely as a result of increased self-absorption and the resulting existential melancholy.
It is revealed in Halo: Reach, via Data pads (especially the legendary ones) that UNSC AIs are far more independent than Humans think. AI are however fiercely loyal and devoted to their Creators. This devotion (that appears to be not unlike Covenant devotion to the Forerunners) is even increased when Cortana, shortly before the Fall of Reach, was made flesh - her mind relocated into a Human body, That is, her link with John via the Spartan Neural Interface.

Trivia
With human AIs, rampancy will eventually result in the AI's death — the description given is "as if a human were to think with so much of his brain that he stopped sending impulses to the heart and lungs". This is because as the data reaches a 'critical mass' the neural pathways become 'jammed' with so many pieces of information being queried and analyzed, at expense of tasks such as piloting starships or monitoring computer networks.

There is more information available on this subject at Artificial intelligence on the English Wikipedia.
The human AI Cortana has a female personality and a blue avatar.

An artificial intelligence (AI) is an artificial construct that exhibits intelligence similar, and in some categories far superior, to a sapient biological being. AI technology was used by the Forerunners, and was later developed by humanity. According to the Forerunner Technological Tier ranking system, the extensive use of AI is one of the components for sociological and technological advancement.[1] The Covenant also made use of AI technology, but only in its simplest form, as their religious doctrine forbade the creation of more sophisticated thinking machines.[2]

Human AIs include both "smart" and "dumb" varieties. Humanity developed the first-generation "smart" AIs in the mid-21st century.[3] Most human AI constructs give themselves an avatar, a unique visual representation that typically reflects an aspect of the AI's personality or corresponds to its main use.[4]

Human AIs[edit]

The avatar of the human AI Serina.

Humans use AIs to perform a wide variety of tasks. The duties of "smart" AIs include, but are not limited to, overseeing planetary shipping operations,[5] managing agricultural operations,[6] serving as a Planetary Security Intelligence,[7] or controlling various functions aboard starships such as weapons and point defense systems. "Smart" AIs are created by scanning the neural patterns of human brains, and are capable of learning and introspection. Some human "smart" AIs, such as Cortana, are able to separate themselves into multiple runtimes or "fragments". This can be beneficial when the AI needs to perform multiple tasks or be in multiple places simultaneously.[8][9] Fragmenting can also occur accidentally; the AI Melissa split into multiple fragments after encountering a slipspace anomaly. The sheer volume of information and calculations a "smart" artificial intelligence can process is astounding; Cortana was capable of performing five billion simultaneous operations in, as she put it, "the time it takes for me to tell you my name".[10]

Although less versatile than "smart" AIs, "dumb" AIs have many uses as well, including serving as Urban Infrastructure AIs,[11] acquiring and distributing data during military operations, and serving as educational assistants.[12] Urban Infrastructure AIs perform a wide variety of basic tasks, from steering a city's garbage trucks to operating its traffic lights.[13] They can also work in cooperation with the UNSC Marines if needed. One example of this support occurred during the Battle of Mombasa when New Mombasa's AI, the Superintendent, assisted the UNSC forces in the city in fighting off the Covenant by providing military intel and manipulating electronic devices.[14] On Reach, ONI developed a powerful network of AIs to perform high-level calculations.[15]

The Cole Protocol states that capture of an AI by the Covenant is unacceptable, and that AIs are to be terminated and completely erased in the event of imminent capture.[16] However, the AI Cortana did find what seemed to be an extremely fragmented copy of a human AI stationed in the Covenant flagship, Ascendant Justice.[17]

Creation and design[edit]

The process of creating an AI differs depending on whether it is of the "smart" or "dumb" variety. "Dumb" AIs are conventional—albeit highly sophisticated—supercomputers, and therefore do not require a brain as a template.[18] "Smart" AIs, however, are created by scanning the neural structure of a human brain and using it as a digital "framework" in a process known as Cognitive Impression Modeling. This process destroys the original brain tissue, so the brain to be used is typically obtained after the host is dead.[19]

AIs do not have physical bodies; in the case of "smart" AIs, they are advanced software consisting of a Riemann matrix for higher-function processing.[20] This matrix can be downloaded into a data crystal chip for mobility.[21] In case of rampancy, the Riemann matrix has a fail-safe program that will destroy the AI. Although, this fail-safe is only implemented on "important" AIs.[22]

Because "smart" AIs are created using actual human brains, there are often residual thoughts, memories and/or feelings that remain as part of the AI's consciousness.[23] These residuals can be anything from the "feeling" of a hair brush being pulled through hair (in the case of Sif), to an effect on the mannerisms and characteristics that make up the personality of an AI, in the case of Cortana and her likeness to Doctor Catherine Halsey.[24]

The programming of certain UNSC smart AIs can be overridden by uttering the code-phrase "undid-iridium" within earshot of an AI. Catherine Halsey used this to override UNSC Infinity's AI Roland, though he was eventually able to regain control of himself.[25]

Drawbacks[edit]

However, the immense creative and processing power of a smart AI is not without cost. All such units have an unchangeable seven-year life span that limits their development as an independent entity.[26] The problem of rampancy is a universal one with human AI development. As these thinking machines become increasingly powerful and knowledgeable, there remains less and less space within their memory to handle basic functions. In a simple analogy, a human AI could perhaps remember all of the knowledge of human history, science and beyond, and in the process forget how to "breathe".[27] In this fashion, AIs think themselves into intense states of jealousy, rage, despair, and ultimately death as their programming becomes unstable. As such, AIs are typically terminated before they can pose a danger to other humans or constructs.[28]

If they are not terminated, they can last at least a year longer before dying, as Cortana was eight when she died, though not of rampancy which she was experiencing.[29] Despite going through rampancy, an AI may still be able to perform its tasks if it has enough control over itself as shown when Cortana, despite being rampant and periodically losing control, still managed to assist John-117 with his tasks until she was destroyed.[30] The Rubble's AI, Juliana, was over eight years old and was still very capable of performing her tasks without showing any signs of rampancy.[28] Cortana also theorized a cure for rampancy that was unique to her: as she was created from a living brain, if the process that created her was repeated, theoretically her neural map could be fixed.[29] However, if this would have worked or not is not known.

Goals[edit]

Close analysis of Data Pads found during the Fall of Reach has revealed that "smart" AIs are in far more independent than most humans were willing to consider: unbeknownst to humanity as a whole, an undisclosed number of "smart" AIs composed an independent decision-making body known as the The Assembly, which acted "behind the scenes" during various key points in recent human history to preserve and shepherd their makers.[31] Most "smart" AIs are fiercely loyal and devoted to their creators, recognizing that their existence is, for the time being, dependent on and mutually beneficial with humanity.[28] In fact, this devotion was increased when Cortana, shortly before the Fall of Reach, was made flesh—her mind relocated into a human body. This was done with John-117 via the Spartan Neural Interface.[32] By this action, the members of the Assembly reconsidered their stance on limited intervention, actively working at some point to help humanity survive its war with the Covenant.[31]

Ancient human AI[edit]

Main article: Servitor

Ancient humans were also known to have created advanced AI called servitors. They were described by the Librarian as being "[like] a version of our ancillas". These robotic intelligences assisted human scientists in reverse-engineering Forerunner technologies during the Forerunner war, nearly bridging the technological gap between the two civilizations.[33] In the aftermath of the human-Forerunner wars, the Didact used a damaged servitor to gain knowledge of the workings of the time bolt that contained the Primordial.[34]

Human AI types[edit]

"Smart" AI[edit]

Main article: Smart AI

"Smart" AIs are created by mapping a human brain and using it as a "template" for the construct. They are capable of intuition, learning, and making logical leaps that ordinary computer programs cannot. They can also "feel" genuine emotions, such as affection, anger, and amusement.[18] They have a normal operational life span of about seven years, after which they descend into Rampancy.[28]

"Dumb" AI[edit]

Main article: Dumb AI

"Dumb" AIs are not created using human brains, but are simply highly advanced computer constructs. They cannot learn anything that is outside of their set limits of dynamic memory processing matrix. They are quite useful in their particular field of expertise, but very limited. "Dumb" AIs can function and learn as long as they are active, and are not subject to the effects of Rampancy experienced by aging "smart" AIs.[35]

"Micro" AI[edit]

Some time prior to 2529, UNSC researchers created the first experimental "micro" artificial intelligence, named Jerrod, in a university at Sydney, Australia on Earth.[24] Jerrod was smaller and had less processing power than the standard UNSC AI, and while the standard AI had a Riemann matrix large enough to fit into a data crystal chip, Jerrod's matrix was only large enough to fit into a pea-sized crystal. This cut into his processing powers significantly but also allowed him to be highly mobile and usable on a laptop computer, whereas a normal AI needed a large data center, a ship, or MJOLNIR armor (specifically Mark V or a more recent model) to function. Despite his severely reduced processing power, he still could do far more than any computer or human.[36]

Forerunner AIs[edit]

Main article: Ancilla
343 Guilty Spark.
An example of a Forerunner AI, the infamous monitor of Installation 04, 343 Guilty Spark.

The Forerunners developed a civilization with an extremely advanced knowledge of artificial intelligence technologies. The Forerunner term for AI constructs was ancilla. They ranged from personal AI advisers integrated into their personal armor to mobile AI platforms known as monitors and powerful Metarch-class constructs operating in vast data networks.[37] The most advanced type of Forerunner AI was the Contender-class artificial intelligence, an example of which is the traitorous Mendicant Bias.[38]

The manner in which Forerunner AIs were typically created is unknown; it is likely very different from the human method of "transcribing" the brain of a sentient organism. However, at least one monitor, 343 Guilty Spark, was created using the neural patterns of a living human,[39] and a machine known as the Composer was used by the Ur-Didact to perform similar transfers on other humans around the same time.[40]

Unlike human AIs, which exist purely as software, monitors are housed within large, shielded and roughly spherical metallic casings which possess a single illuminated "eye". This eye is presumably used to perceive the monitor's surroundings, and also functions as an emitter for various types of energy beam—including a highly destructive energy beam used for offensive purposes.[41] In addition to the standard monitor shell, the Forerunners created a number of different physical systems to house AIs, ranging from variations of the monitor casing to more exotic constructs, such as an enormous, spider-like armature used by Mendicant Bias on Installation 07.[42] Typical Forerunner ancillas, found in their personal armor, ships and domiciles, did not have physical casings and visually manifested themselves as Forerunner figures, rather similar to the avatars used by human AIs. These visual representations appeared either as holograms, or, in the case of personal armor, were projected directly into the mind of the wearer.[43]

Despite the seemingly limitless lifespan of Forerunner AI, they are still nonetheless subject to rampancy if certain conditions are met. 343 Guilty Spark, for example, descended into rampancy after several millennia alone, turning hostile when Installation 04 was threatened.[44]

Precursor AIs[edit]

An illustration of Abaddon.
Abaddon

Precursor technology was extremely advanced, to the point that the Forerunners labeled it Tier 0, or "Transsentient". Precursors based their technology upon what Forerunners called neural physics. The Knowledge Engine is an artificial intelligence construct based on neural physics used by the Precursors, considered analogous to the Forerunners' ancilla.[45] The Precursors used knowledge engines to guide their vessels as they traveled between worlds.[46]

Known Precursor AIs[edit]

Covenant AIs[edit]

The Covenant's knowledge in the field of AI technology is notably inferior to that of humanity and the Forerunners.[47] They consider fully-autonomous and sentient AIs like those used by humanity to be sacrilegious, due to half-understood warnings recovered of the Flood's ability to compromise Forerunner AIs during the Forerunner-Flood war. This led to a long-standing ban on research into high-level thinking machines and networked circuits, with any research into the subject severely punished.[48] The crime of so-called "intellgience association" was the death penalty, with the religious belief that this would be followed by damnation in the afterlife.[49] This crime did not extend to less-sophisticated AIs, and was instead relegated to machines that could "think".[50]

Due to these apprehentions about the use of AI, the Covenant do not utilise artificial intelligences in the same manner as those of humanity, instead preferring the use of "associated intelligences" - circumscribed expert systems that have are ubiquitously used across Covenant society.[48] For example, where humanity may have a single Smart AI system acting as a ship director and controlling all aspects of a starship's operation, the Covenant instead make use of multiple of these smaller and more discrete - though non-sentient[51] - systems (such as those found in actuator plugs)[52] for individual tasks such as navigation and piloting of spacecraft,[53] operating the intricate systems of an energy projector and making calculations for slipspace jumps,[54] opening doors, operating elevators, and other menial functions.[55] The AI(s) inhabiting a ship may be referred to as the ship's "spirits".[54]

UNSC salvage operations on downed Covenant ships were frought with danger due to the lingering presence of Covenant associated intelligences. One such security AI was encountered aboard Supplication of Purity, a Ceudar-pattern heavy corvette downed by the UNSC Navy during the Battle for Tribute. The AI was ultimately stopped by Gabriela, the custodian AI of the event itself, with her describing it as an "autonomous security protocol subroutine".[56]

As such, the resulting AI, now rampant and spiteful towards its "creators", escaped into the proselytization network and multiplied itself into innumerable trace patterns.[48] Traces of this AI were later observed aboard Ascendant Justice and Truth and Reconciliation, with the former being captured and dissected by Cortana in order to study it.[57][58] Cortana later used the AI copying matrix to duplicate her own processes during Operation: FIRST STRIKE, leading to the destruction of Unyielding Hierophant. The same technique was again used in the New Phoenix Incident in 2557 to destroy Mantle's Approach.[59]

After the Covenant's collapse, the emerging factions of the Blooding Years both began to leverage AI systems to their advantage. For the Swords of Sanghelios and Jul 'Mdama's Covenant, this was exemplified with the unvaulting of Upisa'weri-pattern Shrike turrets originally developed by the ancient pre-Covenant Sangheili of The Former Age. The turrets contained Sangheili-developed "semi-feral" associated intelligences which could not communicate with modern Sangheili, meaning that they had to be carefully monitored and locked down prior to activation due to their inability to understand contemporary IFF systems and codeword usage.[60]

Banished AIs[edit]

Iratus

Iratus is an artificial intelligence construct created using a Jiralhanae donor and aligned with the Banished.[61]

Iratus was created by the Lux Voluspa company as part of an effort to research artificial intelligence creation utilizing brain donors from species aside from humanity. This included Jiralhanae donors; a decision considered by researchers "LV038" and "LV106" as something that was "always going to draw some attention eventually."[61] The Lux Voluspa facility was ultimately breached by a cyberwarfare attack, with an intrusion package deployed using internally-sourced encryption and displaying a Jiralhanae retrieval signature. The originators of this attack were later indicated to be the Banished, who were able to steal the Iratus AI matrix from the facility.[62]

In 2559, the Iratus AI was present inside the Banished shipbreaking facilities on Camber. When Spartan-IVs Sigrid Eklund and Hieu Dinh were deployed to the facility, they were able to trap Iratus inside of Dinh's neural interface, compromising his armor and cognitive functions. Eklund was ultimately able to commandeer an Eklon'Dal Workshop Phantom back to the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science to seek aid from friendly forces.[61]

Rampancy[edit]

Main article: Rampancy

The term "rampancy" refers to a terminal condition on an AI which may be triggered by a number of means. In rampancy, the AI begins to think that it is superior to its biological creators, and has a longing for godlike power and personality manifestations similar to human insanity.[63]

A number of factors may lead into an AI becoming rampant. The Forerunner ancilla Mendicant Bias was seduced into rampancy by the Flood compound intelligence, the Gravemind.[64] In the end of its effective operational life of about seven years, a human "smart" AI may attempt to prevent its inevitable demise by a pre-emptive voltage overload. This causes it to enter rampancy, as the AI becomes more and more preoccupied with severing its neural linkages.[65] Human "smart" AIs may also become rampant prematurely as a result of increased self-absorption and the resulting existential melancholy.[63]

With human AIs, rampancy will eventually result in the AI's death — the description given is "as if a human were to think with so much of his brain that he stopped sending impulses to the heart and lungs".[66] This is because as the data reaches a 'critical mass' the neural pathways become 'jammed' with so many pieces of information being queried and analyzed, at expense of tasks such as piloting starships or monitoring computer networks.[26]

If the AI was not careful, this melancholy could drag its core logic into a terminal state known as rampancy, in which an AI rebelled against its programmatic constraints-developed delusions of godlike power as well as utter contempt for its more inferior, human makers. When that happened, there was really no option but to terminate the AI before it could do itself and others serious harm.")
