UNSC Last Gleaming is a prowler in service within the United Nations Space Command.[1]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
The Last Gleaming is a prowler of an unidentified classification. The craft is broad and angular, with an overall delta-wing shape not dissimilar to the C718 Longsword or Vancouver-class courier.[2] UNSC prowlers often disguise their exteriors as civilian vessels[3] - which may explain the similarities here.
Service history[edit]
Human-Covenant War[edit]
Last Gleaming was active in the early years of the Human-Covenant War. On January 3, 2531, the ship rendezvoused with the Third Fleet to report the actions of UNSC Prophecy to Vice Admiral Preston Cole. The ship's commanding officer Orez proceeded to request that Cole dispatch a ship to assist the Prophecy with its critical reactor.[2]
Later on in the month on January 30, Last Gleaming was responsible for transporting Ellen Anders en-route to Epsilon Indi to the UNSC Spirit of Fire. During the travel she translated intercepted Covenant communiques, many of which referred to the Arbiter Ripa 'Moramee. Once Last Gleaming arrived in the Epsilon Indi system, James Cutter expressed his outrage that a prowler had been present when the Prophecy was hit but had elected to do nothing - leaving the crew to die. The Last Gleaming's officer in turn countered that had the prowler initiated rescue operations, the prowler would have made itself known to the Covenant and destroyed too.[2]
Production notes[edit]
While not explicitly confirmed in the original Halo Wars: Genesis comic, the Last Gleaming can be inferred to be a prowler-type vessel. Early in the comic, the Last Gleaming can be shown exiting slipspace to rendezvous with the UNSC Third Fleet, with the ship's commander Orez later being referred to as a Prowler commander by Admiral Cole. This would justify the ship's use by ONI in a highly important mission, lack of interior space, its apparent high slipspace velocity and finally, the angular shape which is common on stealth craft and unusual on other UNSC ships.
Later on in the story, while discussing the fate of UNSC Prophecy, the commanding officer discusses the ship Anders had been brought to the system on, referring to it as a prowler.
Trivia[edit]
The UNSC Last Gleaming is likely named in reference to a line from the National Anthem of the United States of America: What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
