The UNSC Department of Commercial Shipping, abbreviated DCS, is an organization in the United Nations Space Command responsible for maintaining the UNSC commercial fleet and regulating interstellar commerce and shipping between colony worlds.[1]

While all civilian spacecraft must be registered with the Colonial Administration Authority (CAA), any ship outfitted with a slipspace drive must have periodic inspections and licenses approved by the DCS. These vessels are in turn assigned a Ship Identification Number (SIN) at commissioning that forms a part of its permanent identification alongside an identification friend or foe (IFF) code and an administrative record.[2]

DCS registered vessels[edit]

Their cargo ships are typically named in reference to terms and phrases relating to trade and logistics, and each is designated with a freighter identification code. Some of these freighters were attacked by the Covenant ship Minor Transgression in 2524, which led to the beginning of the Human-Covenant War. Lieutenant Commander Jilan al-Cygni posed as a DCS employee as cover for her assignment from the Office of Naval Intelligence to investigate the disappearance of freighters from Harvest.[3]
