*If you go forward and leave the room for a little bit and come back, you will find him dead. His pistol lies on the ground. If you pick it up, you will find that it is missing one bullet, indicating the marine shot himself. This is a possible reference to a statement a Bungie employee made about the AWOL marine from the Halo CE level "343 Guilty Spark", saying that he wanted to have the marine shoot himself after the player exited the room.

*Interestingly, the Marine will sometimes not be armed with any weapon at all, raising his hand to his head as if he had a gun, even though he has no weapon. This is probably the result of a bug in the game.
*If you look closely, the dead Marines lying around the room show no signs of Flood infection. It may be possible the Marine just lost it, and subsequently murdered his comrades in his crazed fear. On the other hand, it is also possible that he destroyed the visible signs of Flood infection. Another possibility is that the infection may just "disappear". It happens to bodies that aren't completely infected; after awhile, the infection just disappears off the body. It is also possible that he killed his squad immediately after the flood infection forms entered their bodies and the infection forms were not inside the soldiers long enough to inject a flood super cell and infect them.
*If you hold the camera in this room in theater mode, he will start to get up after a short wait, then simply vanish.
*The Suicidal Marine has unusually low health, and dies after only a couple of bullets if you shoot him, indicating he may be wounded or have damaged armor.
*The Marine sometimes shoots the player, and himself, if the player gets to close,or hits him.(Unconfirmed)

— The Marine

This Marine was a serviceman in the UNSC Marine Corps. He was part of the unit that fought in Traxus Factory Complex 09 during the Battle of Voi on November 17, 2552. After the Flood landed in the area aboard an infested Ket-pattern battlecruiser, the Marines were overrun and (according to him) most of the members of his unit were infected. He claimed he was forced to kill his infected compatriots in order to survive, and ultimately remained as the only survivor in the area. He was severely traumatized by the event, and when encountered by Spartan John-117 and Arbiter Thel 'Vadam shortly afterward, he remained recoiling in a corner, deliriously relating his encounter with the Flood. While attempting to rationalize his actions by declaring that he did his comrades a favor by killing them, he frequently pointed his sidearm at his temple and contemplated suicide.[1]

Production notes[edit]

  • A homage to a similar paranoid Marine from the level 343 Guilty Spark in Halo: Combat Evolved, this Marine is encountered in the Halo 3 level Floodgate, shortly after passing the area with an M7057 flamethrower. After describing his encounter with the Flood, he points his gun at his temple, seemingly about to kill himself, although he alternates between this and putting his gun down and shaking. Eventually the Marine will stand up in a combat-ready stance, but will not accept other weapons.
  • The dead Marines lying around the room show no signs of Flood infection. While this may be a simple oversight, the lack of infection (along with the reference to the Flood "speaking" and the Marine's expression of guilt) indicates the possibility that his traumatic encounter with the Flood led to paranoid delusion, prompting him to kill his uninfected squadmates.
