During the [[Battle of Mombasa]], Walpole and his squad, led by [[Gunnery Sergeant]] [[Marcus Stacker]], were dispatched from the {{UNSCShip|In Amber Clad}} to infiltrate the [[Covenant]] {{Pattern|Syfon|assault carrier}} ''[[Solemn Penance]]'' with [[John-117]]. During the battle, he and his squad were in [[Pete Stacker (Marine)|Stacker]]'s [[Dropship 77-Troop Carrier Pelican|D77-TC Pelican dropship]] when it was shot down by a [[Scarab|Covenant Scarab Walker]] on approach to an area in [[New Mombasa]], [[Kenya]].  


After their [[D77-TC|Pelican]] made a rough landing outside of an [[Hotel Zanzibar|abandoned beachside hotel]], Walpole reported that  [[O'Brian]] was killed on impact. He, along with his squad quickly moved out to get better cover, and headed toward [[Hotel Zanzibar]] in [[Old Mombasa]].

Moments later, a [[Plasma grenade]] had landed on Walpole's helmet. Using quick reflexes, the [[ODST]] was able to remove his headgear and hurl it toward a camouflaged  [[Sangheili|Special ops Sangheili]]'s position on higher ground.

There, Sergeant Stacker and his team saw the charging soldier, only after it had held [[Jones (Marine)|Jones]] as a prisoner. [[Butkis]] opened fire with an overcharged [[Plasma Pistol]] at the [[Sangheili]], as Stacker shot the [[Sangheili|Elite]] in the head with his [[BR55 Battle Rifle]]. It is assumed Walpole had returned to ''In Amber Clad'' with Stacker after the Chief destroyed the Scarab.

Walpole is a UNSC Orbital Drop Shock Shock Trooper and a member of Second Squad, under the command of Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Stacker. He was assigned to the 7th Battalion, 105th ODST Division, onboard UNSC In Amber Clad in 2552.[1]

Biography[edit]

Battle of Mombasa[edit]

During the Battle of Mombasa, Walpole and his squad, led by Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Stacker, were dispatched from the UNSC In Amber Clad to infiltrate the Covenant Syfon-pattern assault carrier Solemn Penance with John-117. Their D77-TC Pelican was shot down over Old Mombasa by a Protos-pattern Scarab. Walpole survived the crash, but his squad was soon attacked by a Covenant patrol.[1]

When the squad was pinned down by a Kig-Yar Sniper, Walpole — as the squad's sniper — neutralized the Jackal with his sniper rifle, causing the lance's Unggoy to flee the area. A camouflaged Sangheili then snuck up on the squad and took Walpole hostage by holding an energy sword held at the sniper's throat. One of Walpole' squadmates, Butkus, fired an overcharged burst from an Eos'Mak-pattern plasma pistol at the Sangheili, disabling his energy shields, allowing a fellow ODST to kill the Sangheili with a headshot.[1] Along with the rest of his squad, Walpole defended Hotel Zanzibar, then met up with John-117.[2]

Personality and traits[edit]

Like all ODSTs, Walpole is very tough and professional. He is an excellent marksman, and is not afraid of enemy snipers. He also has a notable sense of humor, even in combat, as evidenced by his desire to provide the Kig-Yar a "'Welcome to Earth' gift basket". When he is being held hostage by a Sangheili, he tells the team to kill the Sangheili instead of saving him.[1]

Production notes[edit]

Walpole is named after the Bungie employee Nathan Walpole. He worked on the animations and cinematics for Halo 2, including Another Day at the Beach.[3]
