Shortly after deployment, their [[Dropship 77-Troop Carrier|Pelican dropship]] was shot down over [[Old Mombasa]] by a [[Type-47 Ultra Heavy Assault Platform|Scarab]] walker. He survived the crash, but his squad was soon attacked by a [[Covenant Empire|Covenant]] patrol.

When the squad was pinned down by a [[Kig-yar]] sniper, Jones, as the squad's own sniper, neutralized the Jackal with his "[[SRS99C-S2 AMB Sniper Rifle|welcome-to-Earth gift basket]]", causing the majority of the other Covenant troops to flee the area. A [[Active Camouflage|camouflaged]] [[Sangheili]] then sneaked up on the squad and took Jones hostage by holding an [[Type-1 Energy Weapon/Sword|energy sword]] held at the sniper's throat. One of Jones' squadmates, [[Butkis]], wielding an overcharged [[Type-25 Directed Energy Pistol|plasma pistol]], along with Gunnery Sergeant Stacker using his [[BR55 Battle Rifle]], killed the alien and freed Jones. His subsequent fate is unknown, although it is possible that he returned to the ''In Amber Clad'' with the rest of his squad and accompanied [[John-117]] to [[Installation 05]], participating in the [[Battle of Installation 05|battle]] there. It is also possible that he was killed by the [[Slipstream Space|Slipspace]] explosion created as the assault carrier fled New Mombasa, or that he was killed in the combat that followed.

Like all ODSTs, Jones is very tough and professional. He is an excellent marksman, and is not afraid of enemy snipers. He also has a notable sense of humor, even in combat, as evidenced by his desire to provide the Jackal a "Welcome to Earth" 'gift basket'. When he is being held hostage by an Elite, he orders the team to kill the Elite instead of saving him.

*Jones is probably named after [[Jason Jones]], one of the co-founders of [[Bungie]], who also worked as the Project Lead for ''[[Halo 2]]''.
*Jones has much in common with "Snaky", including both soldiers being ODSTs, both being Marine snipers, and both being lance corporals. It is unknown how "Snaky" could have escaped [[Installation 04]], so it is extremely unlikely that they are the same character.

Fones is a UNSC Orbital Drop Shock Shock Trooper and a member of Second Squad, under the command of Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Stacker. He was assigned to the 7th Battalion, 105th ODST Division, onboard UNSC In Amber Clad in 2552.[1]

Biography[edit]

Battle of Mombasa[edit]

During the Battle of Mombasa, Fones and his squad, led by Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Stacker, were dispatched from the UNSC In Amber Clad to infiltrate the Covenant Syfon-pattern assault carrier Solemn Penance with John-117. Their D77-TC Pelican was shot down over Old Mombasa by a Protos-pattern Scarab. Having survived the crash, Fones reported that O'Brien was killed on impact. He, along with his squad quickly moved out to get better cover, and headed toward Hotel Zanzibar. During a skirmish with camouflaged Sangheili, a Anskum-pattern plasma grenade had landed on Fones' helmet. Fones quickly removed his headgear and hurl it toward the camouflaged Sangheili's position on higher ground. Revealed, the Sangheili took Walpole hostage; Butkus fired an overcharged shot at the Sangheili, disabling his energy shields, allowing a fellow ODST to kill the Sangheili with a headshot.[1] Along with the rest of his squad, Fones defended Hotel Zanzibar, then met up with John-117.[2]

  • Fones, though unnamed throughout the cinematic, is named after the Bungie employee Jeremy Fones. He worked on the animations and cinematics for Halo 2, including Another Day at the Beach.[3]
  • In the original Halo 2 cinematic, Fones and Stacker shared the same facial model, but Stacker was distinguished by the blood on his left cheek. In the remastered cinematic by Blur Studio, Fones' appearance was given a unique facial model which featured a blonde mohawk.
  • In the original Halo 2 cinematic, it was Fones who said, "Cook the bastard" to Butkus, and shot the Sangheili with his battle rifle. In the remastered cinematic, the role was given to Stacker.
