The Black Cat-class subprowler is a classification of small exfiltration ships used by the United Nations Space Command.[1]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
Designated as "subprowlers," they have extremely limited capabilities and are used mostly as exfiltration craft to escape combat situations with stealth and ease. The Black Cat-class subprowlers have slipspace capacitor of limited use; the capacitor has enough charge for about four hours. Once the capacitor exceeded this duration, the vessel would not be able to enter slipspace.[1]
Black Cats are routinely used on high-risk operations so that UNSC Special Forces can retreat quickly and easily, as well as reconnaissance, and troop infiltration and exfiltration missions.[2][3] Each subprowler can hold approximately thirty-eight Spartan-III supersoldiers.[Note 1]
Operational history[edit]
Black Cat-class subprowlers were in service with the UNSC Navy in the early 26th century.[5] Eight such craft were inserted for the Spartan-IIIs during Operation: TORPEDO in 2545, but only one was used as only two Spartans, Lucy-B091 and Tom-B292, survived the engagement.[1] After the Human-Covenant War, the Office of Naval Intelligence designed the Winter-class prowler with the Black Cat-class subprowler's form and functionality in mind.[5]
Trivia[edit]
The class may be named after the PBY Catalina flying boat squadrons reffered to as the Black Cats, during the Second World War. Painted completely dark, Black Cats were tasked with striking targets taking advantage of the cover of night, akin to the stealth role of the Black Cat Subprowler.[6]
