Cylindrical-backed grunt: Pre-Halo?
Archived<!-- Do not touch! -->
I was skimming my old copy of 'the art of Halo' when i found a cylindrical-backed grunt in the grunt concept art. Seeing as TaoH came out ~2 years before the Graphic novel, wouldn't this technically be their first appearance?

The stats section states that a Grunt is 5'6 tall, and weighs well over 100kg. Errmmm... No. Regardless of the fact that it is a 'Blame Stosh' picture from the BWU, it still shows a grunt about half the size of a civilian human. That civilian is not 12 feet tall, nor is the grunt best part of 6. Grunts, going by that picture are around 3 feet tall. Where the hell did this "5'6" figure come from? Being 3ft tall, they will not be over 100kg either.Thebigyeash 14:22, September 6, 2010 (UTC)
Came across something hilarious the other day when I was playing Halo 3 campaign. So, I was playing Sierra 117, and I see a grunt ahead of me. He lights a plasma grenade, and throws it at me. It's still kind of up in the air as to whether the Storm Grunts in Halo 4 are just redesigned Grunts or a sub-species/mutation - developers seem to be suggesting the latter. == Re: Spec Ops Grunts ==
I agree that we should use the most recent depiction of the species, unless of course it is directly claimed by 343i that the Halo 4 Unggoy are a subspecies, which at this stage seems unlikely. --Cyrannian 15:23, 30 October 2012 (EDT)
:It shouldn't be up in the air. They're clearly an entirely different species. The Unggoy in all previous Halo games had chitinous exoskeletons, like arthropods. The Grunts in Halo 4 have rough skin with scutes. It is literally impossible for them to be members of the same species. This isn't a matter of two subspecies, one with dense feathers and a more pronounced beak and one with scutes and ornamental feathers. This is a matter of two totally separate species with completely different skeletal structures, one with a full chitinous exoskeleton and one with osteoderms. Compare the Halo Reach, Halo 4, and Halo 5 Grunts. The Halo Reach and 5 Grunts clearly have articulated exoskeletons like arthropods, whereas the Halo 4 Grunts are more like reptiles. This was an attempted retcon/redesign of the species, and I'm just glad that 343i seems to have returned to Bungie's original vision for the Unggoy and given the Halo 5 ones exoskeletons, if the image in this article is accurate.  --Eipok Kruden 05:21, 21 June, 2015 (PDT)

Well, there is such a thing as a special ops. grunt rank, there's an article on that. But, seeing as how grunts are a subordinate race in the Covenant, they are usually commanded by elites and brutes, although some grunts like Yayap did command grunt forces. Not entirely sure on that one. If there is such a thing, then they certainly could not command anything other than their own race and jackals.

After seeing the different subtypes of Kig-Yar get proper names (Ruuhtian = Halo Trilogy  and Reach Jackals, Ibie'shan = Halo 4 Jackals and T'vaoan = Skirmishers) I would like to see the same clarification happen for the Unggoy, as the Trilogy/Reach Grunts are obviously vastly different from the Halo 4 ones. ==Grunt population==
Guys, dontcha think we should change the main picture of the Minor Grunt to a Minor Grunt from HCEA? Like, I think it's more detailed that way.

In the bonus dvd of Halo 3 legendary edition it is said that grunt population is estimated to be about
Main image.
4 hundred million(or something like that).That is a relatively small number,compared with
the Brutes population for instance ,which is estimated to be more than 12 billion.I don't think that this makes any sense given the fact that the Grunts are the base of the Covenant military force (in the game we encounter at least 3 grunts for every single Elite or Brute we have to eliminate). So one could suppose that their numbers should be greater. Is there any particular reason why the Infinite Grunt hasn’t replaced the Halo 2 Anniversary Grunt in the main image section? It seems to me like it’s supposed to be the same type of Grunt. ==Grunt Strength/Physical Capabilites==

Right now, it says Grunts are a relatively weak species, but I have to disagree. Strength wise, it would seem they are stronger than even Humans. Look at how they carry Fuel Rod Cannons and the occasional Plasma Cannon(best seen on the Covenant, they don't use it like the Chieftains do, just run around scared) in Halo 3-with one arm. In Halo 2, I think they carry it with two. Marines carry it with two, Elites carry it with one. The novel described a situation where a Marine couldn't lift the FRC, although it doesn't make much sense when your average Marine in Halo 2/3 can. Brutes carry it with two, but likely for better aim. It shouldn't be that surprising, as even smaller apes in real life like the chimpanzees have much more arm strength than that of a human. Look it up. I think, however, Grunts may be too scared to use their strength or may not know their advantage over humans in this area, and are probably not as resilient as your average human(the games support this theory), or it could be that the methane suits hinder them quite a bit speed/strength/dexterity wise, like miniature Darth Vaders or something. It could also be due to a lack of training, Grunts are more numerous than the other species and they're likely at the bottom of the training list because it might be a waste of resources to train them over Elites.

I'm starting to ramble, just getting my two cents in.

I agree with you, another source comes from Halo: The Flood when a few grunts attack the Chief and almost drop a plasma 'nade in his suit. It was a close call for the Chief and shows that they are tough little critters and shouldn't be underestimated just because of their size.-- Joshua 029 14:36, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

You know, i've never thought of that. Now, i have a new found respect for the grunts. Imagine what thy could have done on their home planet!PsychoThunder

Grunts lack strength and bravery mentally, at least, that's how i see it. That's why they need a leader in battle and why they cower when alone in battle. Heretic grunts don't cower, most likely because they realise their mental superiority over the Covenant grunts, and they also realise they are facing opposition far greater in size than they are, so their courage and bravery is much greater. Okay, under "Combating Grunts" is stays "In Halo 3, an attack will sometimes blow off the flimsy cover of a Grunt's methane tank, and may rupture the tank inside. The respirator can also be knocked off. This is fatal after a certain amount of time, but they will continue to fight. A leakage of methane gas can turn a situation perilous in the presence of a flame." On what level would you find both grunts, and something you could use to start a fire? Actually my friend has sniped of their respirators and they started to choke, and then fell over dead.I don`t think that it is the tank so much as the mask because they probably have backup reserves of methane but if their mask is gone then they are forced to breathe air.

grunt heads
what I find most perplexing is the fact that in halo ce, some grunts have pointed heads and some have more rounded heads. in halo two and three, they took out the pointy headed grunts. whats with that?

Yeah, and also, in Halo CE, there were grunts how had gas tanks that had rounded tips, but not in any other games. PsychoThunder

I think the different shapes of the tanks and kinds of masks may possibly be due to either rank or a choice that grunt made on what to bring into a combat situation. Also the curlbacks may be for rolling out of the halo ce dropships.

The point is part of the mask. But I do believe that Curlbacks in CE are higher in rank, as they have a tendency to fight longer and flee less. - Echoes are all you hear... 22:10, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

viciousness
I have read a few articles about Grunts from Halo: Contact Harvest and have noticed that they seem to be unusually vicious in that book. I mean, one grunt tore a man's stomach apart for no apparent reason and another tried to bite into a man's neck. I wonder why these grunts are so aggressive, while the grunts in the games are quite cowardly. They seem to be a bit unpredictable, these grunts.
I'm just saying. :-) Sor 11:19, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

101 pounds would be 45 and half kilograms and the cheif only wieghs half a ton. A (presumably) very muscular 6'8" man would come to about 90 to 110 kilograms leaving the armour to be in the area of 400 kilos

Master cheif weigh 136 kilograms withouth his armor acording to books. And why would not a grunt weight 118 kilos? They are around 150 centimeters long and is very muscular by nature as acording to first strike a marine wasent able to lift a fuel rod gun and grunts are seen running with it in one arm like it would weight no more than a phone and it is maybe meaning when they have their armor on they weight 118 kiograms

Loyalist grunts are MUCH more common in Halo 3, infact the only time I saw a Seperatist Grunt in Halo 3 was at a distance on a bridge during the level The Ark. I have to agree too that Grunts are very strong when it comes to strength but they are most likely to scared to carry large guns because of their low rank and fear that they will be killed by their Brute captian. Brutes are weak without their armor; same with elites. Poplutation wise they are massive in numbers. I would esamate about 70 billion because of the number of young they have at a time as well as how much they have their young. Just think about it. Each pair of Unggoys having 20-50 young and then those having 20-50 young?! That is a lot of Grunts.

That is really all I have to say

I think the Bestiarum only counted the population on the homeworlds of each race. We know that Balaho is a smaller planet than Earth and that it underwent an environmental catastrophe in the past, so it could not support a very large population. But on other Covenant worlds I think the Grunts must number into the tens of billions. I mean, the human population is confirmed to be around 60 billion, so it would make sense that the Covenant races would not be massively outnumbered. Especially the cannon fodder. == Should the Ultra Grunt information provided in this article be removed from Halopedia? ==

This is a call for deletion! Or at least editing. I say this because Bungie refers to the white armored Grunts seen in Halo 3 as SpecOps Grunts. And SpecOps Grunts do throw a lot of grenades like their Elite counterparts. I think the Ultra Grunt information in this article should be removed or rewritten to avoid confusion. I've noticed that the ODST "bestiary" information on them and other recent sources have described the Grunts as arthropods. How exactly does that make sense? Glowing[edit]

Did anyone else notice the glowing grunts in the five minute firefight that was set on Corvette. FATGUNN 02:05, August 28, 2010 (UTC)

Erroneous Height[edit]

The stats section states that a Grunt is 5'6 tall, and weighs well over 100kg. Errmmm... No. Regardless of the fact that it is a 'Blame Stosh' picture from the BWU, it still shows a grunt about half the size of a civilian human. That civilian is not 12 feet tall, nor is the grunt best part of 6. Grunts, going by that picture are around 3 feet tall. Where the hell did this "5'6" figure come from? Being 3ft tall, they will not be over 100kg either.Thebigyeash 14:22, September 6, 2010 (UTC)

The image you linked is using perspectives to achieve that shot; the Grunt is farther while the civilian is closest to the camera. Also, the Halo Encyclopedia confirmed this. For more clarification, see this.- 5əb'7aŋk(7alk) 14:29, September 6, 2010 (UTC)

I'd say its just a gameplay feature. It happens to me pretty frequently on coop, especially with Thunderstorm on. -- Specops306 Autocrat Qur'a 'Morhek 22:39, 25 October 2010 (EDT)

Variants[edit]

Is it mentioned anywhere on the article that in the first Halo there were two different looking types of grunts (the ones with the straight pointing tanks and masks that go outwards to the sides, this being the type that also appeared in 2 and 3; and also the ones with curved tanks and masks that pointed more back)--Black kille 21:28, 6 January 2011 (EST)

Yeah - we call them "straightbacks" and "curlbacks". Bungie intended another variant to be in Combat evolved, the cylindral-shaped "flatbacks"-- Forerunner 02:55, 7 January 2011 (EST)

RvB: Animated[edit]

Why does the gallery still feature the image from Red versus Blue: Animated? I removed it about a year ago, but it was restored. Doesn't it technically count as fan art? Unggoy Philosophies?[edit]

According to the Halo Encyclopedia, one of the simple philosophies of the Unggoy is "When in doubt, flee!", but yet another simple philosophy from one of the Halo novels (not sure which one it is, nor can I remember), is "When in doubt, shoot!". If anyone could shed any light on this, like where did this other philosophy came from what book, and whatever else, and maybe someone could adjust or address the issue. Xamikaze330 21:36, 17 September 2011 (EDT)Xamikaze330

They say both of them. The latter one comes from Halo: The Flood (iirc, no?) and the former I believe came from Halo 3. Vegerot goes RAWR! Vegerot (talk) 21:45, 17 September 2011 (EDT)

second, third or even fourth?[edit]

Inaccurate Main Image[edit]

I'm reverting the main image, because it is of a Covenant Storm grunt, and not a normal grunt. It does not represent the species as a whole. Even though it is our most recent image of a grunt, does not mean we need to use it. SUPPLYPAD COMPLETE 21:10, 15 August 2012 (EDT)

Why? What makes it different than other Unggoy, other than wearing different armor? It's still an Unggoy, and the image is the most recent canonical image we have, so it should be used.--Spartacus (Talk | Contribs) 21:58, 15 August 2012 (EDT)
Just look at them. One kind as an exoskeleton, the other has skin and scutes. They're different species.--Eipok Kruden 05:27, 21 June, 2015 (PDT)

It's still kind of up in the air as to whether the Storm Grunts in Halo 4 are just redesigned Grunts or a sub-species/mutation - developers seem to be suggesting the latter. If so, they're sort of like Skirmishers - still Kig-Yar, just not the mainstream Kig-Yar SPARTAN-347 22:01, 15 August 2012 (EDT)

I agree with Spartacus. When the Elites were updated in Reach, so was their main image. Even though they were bulkier and meaner looking. It's still the same thing. The jackals in CE are still Jackals in Halo Reach. --ADinoSupremacist 14:12, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

The interactive guide makes it clear that the Halo 4 grunts and just grunts.ArchedThunder 23:38, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

I agree that we should use the most recent depiction of the species, unless of course it is directly claimed by 343i that the Halo 4 Unggoy are a subspecies, which at this stage seems unlikely. --Cyrannian 15:23, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

It shouldn't be up in the air.

Tier 4[edit]

Where exactly is it stated that Unggoy were Tier 4 before the firing of the Array? The visual guide states that ecological collapse due to overindustrialisation happened post reseeding.

The Bestiarum: "It is still recovering from preactivation environmental collapse caused by massive global overindustrialization. It seems that prior to their incorporation into the [Covenant], the Unggoy had yet to [reattain] Tier 4 technologies." The visual guide doesn't mention when the catastrophe happened.

Subtypes[edit]

After seeing the different subtypes of Kig-Yar get proper names (Ruuhtian = Halo Trilogy and Reach Jackals, Ibie'shan = Halo 4 Jackals and T'vaoan = Skirmishers) I would like to see the same clarification happen for the Unggoy, as the Trilogy/Reach Grunts are obviously vastly different from the Halo 4 ones. The differences are even greater than those of the Kig-Yar subtypes. I for one would be eternally grateful for a confirmed differentiation between the types. Graffix[edit]

Guys, dontcha think we should change the main picture of the Minor Grunt to a Minor Grunt from HCEA? Like, I think it's more detailed that way.

Main image.[edit]

Is there any particular reason why the Infinite Grunt hasn’t replaced the Halo 2 Anniversary Grunt in the main image section? It seems to me like it’s supposed to be the same type of Grunt. There is already a render being used on the Unggoy Conscript page that can be used. ArchedThunder (talk) 04:19, March 13, 2022 (EDT)
