Came across something hilarious the other day when I was playing Halo 3 campaign. So, I was playing Sierra 117, and I see a grunt ahead of me.  He lights a plasma grenade, and throws it at me.  While he is doing this, he shouts "SUCK IT HERETIC!!!" I am the only person who finds this funny? Because it was awesome. Covenant Ghost 02:15, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

The stats section states that a Grunt is 5'6 tall, and weighs well over 100kg. Errmmm... No. Regardless of the fact that it is a 'Blame Stosh' picture from the BWU, it still shows a grunt about half the size of a civilian human. That civilian is not 12 feet tall, nor is the grunt best part of 6. Grunts, going by that picture are around 3 feet tall. Where the hell did this "5'6" figure come from? Being 3ft tall, they will not be over 100kg either.Thebigyeash 14:22, September 6, 2010 (UTC)

Well, there is such a thing as a special ops. grunt rank, there's an article on that.  But, seeing as how grunts are a subordinate race in the Covenant, they are usually commanded by elites and brutes, although some grunts like Yayap did command grunt forces.  Not entirely sure on that one.  If there is such a thing, then they certainly could not command anything other than their own race and jackals.

Well ultra grunts might be the special operations commander like the ultra elites are. The ultra grunt might be light the major grunt for special operations.
According to the Halo Encyclopedia, one of the simple philosophies of the Unggoy is "When in doubt, flee!", but yet another simple philosophy from one of the Halo novels (not sure which one it is, nor can I remember), is "When in doubt, shoot!". It's still kind of up in the air as to whether the Storm Grunts in Halo 4 are just redesigned Grunts or a sub-species/mutation - developers seem to be suggesting the latter. I agree with Spartacus. When the Elites were updated in Reach, so was their main image. Even though they were bulkier and meaner looking. It's still the same thing. The jackals in CE are still Jackals in Halo Reach. --ADinoSupremacist 14:12, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
4 hundred million(or something like that).That is a relatively small number,compared with
the Brutes population for instance ,which is estimated to be more than 12 billion.I don't think that this makes any sense given the fact that the Grunts are the base of the Covenant military force (in the game we encounter at least 3 grunts for every single Elite or Brute we have to eliminate). So one could suppose that their numbers should be greater. I agree that we should use the most recent depiction of the species, unless of course it is directly claimed by 343i that the Halo 4 Unggoy are a subspecies, which at this stage seems unlikely. --Cyrannian 15:23, 30 October 2012 (EDT)
:It shouldn't be up in the air. They're clearly an entirely different species. The Unggoy in all previous Halo games had chitinous exoskeletons, like arthropods. The Grunts in Halo 4 have rough skin with scutes. It is literally impossible for them to be members of the same species. This isn't a matter of two subspecies, one with dense feathers and a more pronounced beak and one with scutes and ornamental feathers. This is a matter of two totally separate species with completely different skeletal structures, one with a full chitinous exoskeleton and one with osteoderms. Compare the Halo Reach, Halo 4, and Halo 5 Grunts. The Halo Reach and 5 Grunts clearly have articulated exoskeletons like arthropods, whereas the Halo 4 Grunts are more like reptiles. This was an attempted retcon/redesign of the species, and I'm just glad that 343i seems to have returned to Bungie's original vision for the Unggoy and given the Halo 5 ones exoskeletons, if the image in this article is accurate.  --Eipok Kruden 05:21, 21 June, 2015 (PDT)

Grunt Strength/Physical Capabilites
Tier 4
Right now, it says Grunts are a relatively weak species, but I have to disagree.  Strength wise, it would seem they are stronger than even Humans.  Look at how they carry Fuel Rod Cannons and the occasional Plasma Cannon(best seen on the Covenant, they don't use it like the Chieftains do, just run around scared) in Halo 3-with one arm. In Halo 2, I think they carry it with two.  Marines carry it with two, Elites carry it with one.  The novel described a situation where a Marine couldn't lift the FRC, although it doesn't make much sense when your average Marine in Halo 2/3 can.  Brutes carry it with two, but likely for better aim. It shouldn't be that surprising, as even smaller apes in real life like the chimpanzees have much more arm strength than that of a human.  Look it up. I think, however, Grunts may be too scared to use their strength or may not know their advantage over humans in this area, and are probably not as resilient as your average human(the games support this theory), or it could be that the methane suits hinder them quite a bit speed/strength/dexterity wise, like miniature Darth Vaders or something.  It could also be due to a lack of training, Grunts are more numerous than the other species and they're likely at the bottom of the training list because it might be a waste of resources to train them over Elites.
Where exactly is it stated that Unggoy were Tier 4 before the firing of the Array? The visual guide states that ecological collapse due to overindustrialisation happened post reseeding.

I'm starting to ramble, just getting my two cents in.

I agree with you, another source comes from Halo: The Flood when a few grunts attack the Chief and almost drop a plasma 'nade in his suit. It was a close call for the Chief and shows that they are tough little critters and shouldn't be underestimated just because of their size.-- Joshua 029 14:36, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Subtypes
Grunts lack strength and bravery mentally, at least, that's how i see it. That's why they need a leader in battle and why they cower when alone in battle. Heretic grunts don't cower, most likely because they realise their mental superiority over the Covenant grunts, and they also realise they are facing opposition far greater in size than they are, so their courage and bravery is much greater. After seeing the different subtypes of Kig-Yar get proper names (Ruuhtian = Halo Trilogy  and Reach Jackals, Ibie'shan = Halo 4 Jackals and T'vaoan = Skirmishers) I would like to see the same clarification happen for the Unggoy, as the Trilogy/Reach Grunts are obviously vastly different from the Halo 4 ones. The differences are even greater than those of the Kig-Yar subtypes. I for one would be eternally grateful for a confirmed differentiation between the types. Okay, under "Combating Grunts" is stays "In Halo 3, an attack will sometimes blow off the flimsy cover of a Grunt's methane tank, and may rupture the tank inside. The respirator can also be knocked off. This is fatal after a certain amount of time, but they will continue to fight. A leakage of methane gas can turn a situation perilous in the presence of a flame." On what level would you find both grunts, and something you could use to start a fire? In my experience, youre only given flamethrowers and firebomb gernades on levels with the flood. Zombee 04:39, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

The interactive guide makes it clear that the Halo 4 grunts and just grunts.ArchedThunder 23:38, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

I agree that we should use the most recent depiction of the species, unless of course it is directly claimed by 343i that the Halo 4 Unggoy are a subspecies, which at this stage seems unlikely. --Cyrannian 15:23, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

It shouldn't be up in the air.

Tier 4[edit]

Where exactly is it stated that Unggoy were Tier 4 before the firing of the Array? The visual guide states that ecological collapse due to overindustrialisation happened post reseeding.

The Bestiarum: "It is still recovering from preactivation environmental collapse caused by massive global overindustrialization. It seems that prior to their incorporation into the [Covenant], the Unggoy had yet to [reattain] Tier 4 technologies." The visual guide doesn't mention when the catastrophe happened.

Subtypes[edit]

After seeing the different subtypes of Kig-Yar get proper names (Ruuhtian = Halo Trilogy and Reach Jackals, Ibie'shan = Halo 4 Jackals and T'vaoan = Skirmishers) I would like to see the same clarification happen for the Unggoy, as the Trilogy/Reach Grunts are obviously vastly different from the Halo 4 ones. The differences are even greater than those of the Kig-Yar subtypes. I for one would be eternally grateful for a confirmed differentiation between the types. Graffix[edit]

Guys, dontcha think we should change the main picture of the Minor Grunt to a Minor Grunt from HCEA? Like, I think it's more detailed that way.

Main image.[edit]

Is there any particular reason why the Infinite Grunt hasn’t replaced the Halo 2 Anniversary Grunt in the main image section? It seems to me like it’s supposed to be the same type of Grunt. There is already a render being used on the Unggoy Conscript page that can be used. ArchedThunder (talk) 04:19, March 13, 2022 (EDT)
