Following contact with the Flood, Sergeant Johnson managed to avoid being overwhelmed by [[Infection Form]]s. He fired at an Infection form which had latched onto a fellow [[Marine]] (presumably [[Private Mendoza]]), killing the Flood. He watched as the Marine transformed before his eyes into a monstrous form (what we know as [[Combat Forms]]). He took a blow to his arm from the Flood's tentacles and was thrown out of the containment room, across a large observation chamber and into the wall.

Several infected Marines started to approach him and he made a run for it, but ran into a sealed door. He tried to hack it, but the doors remained shut. An infected Marine fired a [[shotgun]] shell that richoeted off a wall, missing the sergeant. The sergeant dove below, unloading the last remaining rounds in his [[Assault Rifle]] onto the infected soldier. He grabbed his [[Pistol]] and made his way across the broken [[Energy Bridge]], throwing a [[Grenade]] behind him, killing his pursueres. He stepped onto the lift, glad to finally escape the Flood. How he later managed to survive the destruction of [[Halo]] is explained in [[Halo: First Strike]].

Breaking Quarantine is a story in the Halo Graphic Novel, illustrated and written by Japanese artist Tsutomu Nihei. It serves as an expansion on the events of the Halo: Combat Evolved level 343 Guilty Spark, depicting Sergeant Johnson's escape from the Flood containment facility featured in the level.[1]

Official synopsis[edit]

One of the untold tales from Halo is Sergeant Johnson's escape from the clutches of the Flood menace. Now's the time to reveal how the UNSC's toughest marine got out of an inescapable trap.[1]

Plot summary[edit]

Following contact with the Flood, Sergeant Johnson manages to avoid being overwhelmed by Pod infectors. He fires at a Pod infector which has latched onto Private Jenkins, though he fails to kill it. He watches as the Marine transforms before his eyes into a combat form. The combat form delivers a blow to Johnson's arm, throwing the sergeant out of the containment room, across a large observation chamber, and into a wall.

Several infected Marines approach Johnson, prompting him to run into a hallway. He locks the door with a spoofer and proceeds down the hallway. An infected Marine fires a shotgun at Johnson. The pellets hit the wall, missing the sergeant by inches. Johnson dives to the ground, firing the remaining rounds in his assault rifle into the combat form, ripping its head off but not killing it. He then shoots down the combat form with his pistol. He makes his way across an light bridge, jumping onto the other side just as a combat form shuts the bridge down. As he jumps across the chasm, he throws a grenade behind him. The explosion kills his pursuers, knocking him to the ground. He steps onto the lift, glad to have finally escaped the Flood.
