:I do not know if this means anything, but... John-117 is observed for the Spartan-II program by Dr. Halsey and Keyes when he is six years old in the year 2517. This would make his year of birth either 2510 or 2511 (his entry on this wikia has it at 2511, I don't know if this is stated anywhere or if it is concluded by the year he was observed for the program, if he was born after September he was born in 2510). Assuming it's 2510, he is born precisely 3,000 years after the Battle of Marathon, which occurred in 490 B.C. Even if it's 2511, that makes it 3,001 years. ==What i think it could be==
I have walked among men and angels over three thousand years, only time has no end... no beginning... no purpose. I wander the earth, seeking forgiveness for my old crimes against god, and man. I live to see death and destruction, over the light, but the light cannot be extinguished. I live in a prison of my own demise, I am lost in time.
Sounds close enough...I do not believe its Gravemind, however. Gravemind's voice is slower and deeper. This sounds more like the Chief, but since the Chief wasn't around 3,000 years ago, it seems to be a Forerunner. The Chief and The Forerunner might share the same vocal patterns, which could explain why Guilty Spark recognizes MC as a Reclaimer. 5748 PrimaryCipher 02:36, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
== My thoughts on it all ==
Possibly, Gravemind could have visited Earth before, years and years in the past, and screwed it up before leaving to Delta Halo. It could be that Gravemind got there FROM Earth because of the Forerunner. As some people have thought that the Forerunner were the predecessor to Man, Gravemind might think that his 'crimes' against the Forerunner are 'crimes' against Man.
And also, it doesn't have to fit Gravemind's normal way of speaking for it to be him. Bungie placed this in there as something to keep people going until Halo 3 and everything is HOPEFULLY explained. There was the ilovebees.com thing before the release of one of the other games, so this is a little promo thing.
~Zyrin | |||
I think that it's Gravemind because of my theroy on Gravemind, about him being a Forerunner (or a group of them) who's job was to recover the others from their shield worlds (since it doesn't seem like there is a way out from the inside), and reteach the ones in the Ark about the history (as the activation might have erased their memories, or devolved them into humans (making the Forerunners either humans or the evolved form)), but the shielding device malfuncutioned, and he/she/they mixed with the Flood. The crimes would be dooming the population, as it (Gravemind) failed, or because the Halos didn't work, and walking the Earth 3000 years and seeing the battles would be because it couldn't die, or because no one finding it. This might explain why it is a different speaking for it, because this is in his mind, and the normal way might be a collective voice of all of the parts. My theroy's probably wrong, though, I just got bored and decided to write this down here. Sorry for spelling and grammar mistakes. -Jesse-
== Prison of...? == | |||
The line about prison sounds like "a prison of my own device." "My own demise" doesn't sound right... Kriegsaffe No. 9 05:13, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
*I agree, but based more on grammer than sound. It sounds like "Demise" but "Device" makes more sense in the sentence, and is close enough to be a misiterperetation by fans. Of course, the last thing we want is an edit war, but if no one has any counter-arguments, I'll change it in a week or so. Din's Fire 997 00:21, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
== Durandal == | |||
From the current version: "This sound clip has been around for a while, and it has been recognized by long time Bungie fans. This was said by the AI Durandal in Bungie's Marathon series, after his conflicts with freeing the S'pht in order to try and help the Pfhor, and he realized the wrong he had done." Who wrote this? Is it a fragment of a longer argument and the rest was deleted? It makes no sense currently. --68.44.13.236 04:31, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

== could it be 343 Guilty Spark? ==
He has been around for all of that time, and why is his name guilty spark? I have read here and in other places that people think that he could've triggered a firing of halo early before the forerunners could escape to the shield world of Onyx. I know it doesnt sound like him but who knows....
Only Humans and Forerunners could activate the Halos. Guilty Spark's name could come from the fact that the Forerunner knew that they would regret (guilty) their actions (spark), namely activating the Halos. --24.123.189.2 12:45, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
No, we know he didn't activate any Halos because he needed a "reclaimer" to get the index from the library, which Master Chief could only get, and we know that the other reclaimer didn't make it because apparently you can find the dead guy in the library, otherwise, the Monitors of all the Halos would have destroyed all humanity, and the Flood, because that's what the Monitor tried to do in Halo 1, for example.-BllasaeBllasae 00:49, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

This actually makes the most sense on the matter of the Halo 2 one.
- I have the weird feeling that these messages are meant to be said by somebody beyond Cortana or Chief or Gravemind, and even if it is the most possible not even Mendicant Bias. Maybe even beyond the Forerunners. I mean that something demigod said this messages and I think that these messages will have somehow divine meaning. Something really old might have said this. And I wouldn't be suprised - Bungie created Forerunners, they named Chief John-117 (which has biblical meaning). Not even to mention that Bungie came with these messages said by Cortana and those messages from the OST. That's my opinion. JirkaV 0:37, 24 February 2008

While the first and third lines seemed to have been decoded, the second and fourth lines are still unintelligible, although when you listen to the second line, it sounds like "Humans and Elites will die,", and when to the last line, it sounds like, "So fall/forth shall all of life.", so if you sum it up, you get:
"Side by side, we march as one,
Humans and Elites will die,
The Earth shall fall if we strike together,
So fall/forth shall all of life."
Am I only one who noticed this? - Guest
I most definitely believe that the following is the proper transcription:
"Side by side, we march as one,
Shoulders set, blades aligned,
Let our footfalls strike together,
So our foes shall know our might."
It would only make sense for the Gravemind to speak in such a manor. A Type-46 ISV (talk) 17:53, September 20, 2024 (EDT)

==Thought== | |||
"The exact person who is speaking is unknown. Just like the Destroyer's Invocation Message, there are many possibilities about who it could be. The likely candidates are the Gravemind and the Prophet of Truth since only Elites and Humans are mentioned."
Perhaps it is fallen Elites who fought beside the Arbiter with the humans. To me the voices sound as if they are trying to replicate the vocals of elites, while still trying to sound like flood. The phrase seems to be spoken honorably, a sign that elites are speaking it. This is just my thought however. --Kebath 'Holoree 19:49, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
== Remember: == | |||
Just some quick things to remember before assuming a speaker of these messages.
* The Gravemind speaks in heptameter, or a multiple of 7 syllables in each phrase. Check the syllables and those of other possible words, as the exact transcript isn't certain.
* Changing the pitch of the words can make the voice sound like practically anyone. Not dissing those who speed it up or slow it down but I could sound like Paris Hilton if you changed my voice enough.
* Time is different for different factions. An A.I. has a distorted sense of time due to their processing power so "3000 years" could in fact be only minutes.
Please post your own reminder things!
Now just some of my theories:
The same passage I cited above could be an AI (as mentioned b4)or perhaps the Marine in the novel The Flood who was still aware of his actions while being infected due to a compromised Infection Form. It is possible that the same phenomena occured elsewhere. Or maybe a combination of both; maybe an AI that surrendered to the Gravemind (Mecindant Bias?)retained awareness? Please reply with theories of your own.

== I Believe it's Gravemind ==
I have just started playing Halo games but ever since I heard this I've played more often and I belive the only person it can be is Gravemind. His voice matches the music almost exact. I'm not sure yet who this Mecindant Bias is yet but from what I just read he is a Forunner AI. I don't belive it's a Prophet, Guilty Spark, or any other living being becuase after he said "Elites and Humans will die" he says "So forth will all of life" so unless they want to die too it can't be them. Lastly it can't be Mecindant Bias or Cortana because they are AI and if all life where to die they would have nothing left so they would have no reason to exist. Gravemind is the only person it can be for he is not exactly alive and he does hold a grudge to all of life.HaloGameOver 03:13, February 9, 2010 (UTC)HaloGameOver |

Okay, I come to bring some new development. I heard of this from a friend, so I decided to download Adobe Audition and tried to muck around in the audio file. I took out some of the backdround hum/whatever, and the soundclip sounds a bit better. I think that "I wander the earth, seeking forgiveness for my horrible crimes against God and man." should be "I wander the earth, seeking forgiveness for what my horrible crimes against God have had.". And that "I live to see death, destruction, over the light..." should be "I live to see death, destruction, evil over the light". Please tell me what you can after you listen to it, you can listen to what I made here: http://www.lanowen.com/index.php?q=node/230 (no need to register). Cheers. Lanowen 03:33, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Playing around with pitch and such[edit]
I went and cropped the Reversed Message out of Destroyer's Invocation and reversed the whole sequence, then raised the pitch between 150% and 165%. Really got my attention -- it sounds like a Monitor's voice! More evidence that it's Mendicant Bias?
Also, I think the posted transcript of the Dread Intrusion message is wrong. The first two lines sound right, but I think the last two lines should be, "The Earth will fall; strike together/So forth shall go all life." I haven't the faintest idea what that's supposed to mean, but I played around with it a bit in Audition and that's what I came up with. ~Guest

My thoughts on it all[edit]

-Jesse-
Prison of...?[edit]
The line about prison sounds like "a prison of my own device." "My own demise" doesn't sound right... Kriegsaffe No. 9 05:13, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, but based more on grammer than sound.
Durandal[edit]
From the current version: "This sound clip has been around for a while, and it has been recognized by long time Bungie fans. This was said by the AI Durandal in Bungie's Marathon series, after his conflicts with freeing the S'pht in order to try and help the Pfhor, and he realized the wrong he had done." Who wrote this? Is it a fragment of a longer argument and the rest was deleted? It makes no sense currently. --68.44.13.236 04:31, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- I decided to delete it without going through the history to find out how it was made. --68.44.13.236 16:38, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Then I went back to the history anyway. It was User:69.92.78.59 (contribs), and it didn't make sense at the time it was added either (this revision). --68.44.13.236 06:29, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
could it be 343 Guilty Spark?[edit]
Halo 3[edit]
There's a similar message in Halo 3. [1] --Dragonclaws(talk) 22:50, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Mendicant Bias[edit]
I believe it's Mendicant Bias.
...I have walked among men and angels for three thousand years. Time has no end... no beginning... no purpose.
(It's reasonable the Prophets may have found the Dreadnought around 3,000 years ago)
I walk the earth, seeking forgiveness for my horrible crimes against God and man.
(He regrets what he did against the forerunners)
I live to see death, destruction, end, over the light, but the light cannot be extinguished.
(He's powerless against the destruction of reclaimers)
I live imprisoned in my own demise.
(He's trapped in the Dreadnought)
I am lost in time...

- I am lost in time...
This could be a reference to how Mendicant Bias was stuck with listening to the Prophets lies(lost) for 3,000 years (time). Could this be mentioned in the article?--Darth Scott 08:05, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Revisions (12.19.2007)[edit]
I have done some revisions to the page; organizing, removing links to videos, editing the transcripts. Hope that helps. I won't remove the clean-up header, however. -Kukulza
Lines in Dread Intrusion/Gravemind REVEALED...maybe...[edit]
While the first and third lines seemed to have been decoded, the second and fourth lines are still unintelligible, although when you listen to the second line, it sounds like "Humans and Elites will die,", and when to the last line, it sounds like, "So fall/forth shall all of life.", so if you sum it up, you get:
"Side by side, we march as one,
Humans and Elites will die,
The Earth shall fall if we strike together,
So fall/forth shall all of life."
Am I only one who noticed this? - Guest
I most definitely believe that the following is the proper transcription: "Side by side, we march as one, Shoulders set, blades aligned, Let our footfalls strike together, So our foes shall know our might." It would only make sense for the Gravemind to speak in such a manor. A Type-46 ISV (talk) 17:53, September 20, 2024 (EDT)
Reverted[edit]
I reverted this article to a slightly better version, which includes the message from Halo 2. However, I still think this article needs a bit of work, and if anyone can help with that, it would be appreciated.--72.141.217.254 18:14, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
I have a question[edit]
How do you listen to the soundtracks backwards!? The Sith version of Master Chief File:|14px]] My happy placeWhat I've edited 16:51, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Noticed something[edit]
I was listening to the reversed message and noticed that the text here is not what I hear when I listen to the message. I think I hear it say angels for several thousand years Chasenuva1 18:12, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Thought[edit]
Remember:[edit]
Just some quick things to remember before assuming a speaker of these messages.
- The Gravemind speaks in heptameter, or a multiple of 7 syllables in each phrase. Check the syllables and those of other possible words, as the exact transcript isn't certain.
- Changing the pitch of the words can make the voice sound like practically anyone. Not dissing those who speed it up or slow it down but I could sound like Paris Hilton if you changed my voice enough.
- Time is different for different factions. An A.I. has a distorted sense of time due to their processing power so "3000 years" could in fact be only minutes.
Please post your own reminder things!
Now just some of my theories: The same passage I cited above could be an AI (as mentioned b4)or perhaps the Marine in the novel The Flood who was still aware of his actions while being infected due to a compromised Infection Form. It is possible that the same phenomena occured elsewhere. Or maybe a combination of both; maybe an AI that surrendered to the Gravemind (Mecindant Bias?)retained awareness? Please reply with theories of your own. Gilgamesh the usurper 00:11, January 8, 2010 (UTC)
I Believe it's Gravemind[edit]
Gravemind is the only person it can be for he is not exactly alive and he does hold a grudge to all of life.HaloGameOver 03:13, February 9, 2010 (UTC)HaloGameOver
