The M274 Ultra-Light All-Terrain Vehicle, otherwise known as the Mongoose, is a United Nations Space Command ground reconnaissance vehicle. It holds two people, a driver and a passenger.

Overview
Design details
One of the fastest ground vehicles available to UNSC Marine Personnel is the M274 Ultra-Light All-Terrain Vehicle, also known as the Mongoose. Essentially four wheels and an engine, this ATV can travel rapidly over nearly every type of terrain.

It can be seen as an analog to the Ghost, but unlike the Covenant vehicle, it has no armament in its design. The Mongoose possesses no defensive or offensive capabilities what so ever, besides running over enemies, but this has proven harder to do than with the Warthog. As a result, troops often seat weapon specialists behind the driver to provide much needed fire support during combat. What it lacks in firepower however, it makes up for with raw speed.
The Mongoose is one of the fastest and most maneuverable ground vehicles in the arsenal of the UNSC Marine Corps. It is a highly effective vehicle for reconnaissance, rapid transportation, swift tactical versatility, and for shooting between positions. A smaller cousin to the ubiquitous M831 Troop Transport, the Mongoose is a small ATV capable of carrying a driver in the middle of the vehicle, and features a rear platform that can be used to carry one additional passenger, although official UNSC safety protocols advise against this.

This vehicle is reportedly unwieldy and difficult to control at high speeds, thus making the passenger's role of vehicle defense all the more difficult. Both the driver and passenger are completely exposed to the elements and enemy fire, making them extremely vulnerable. An ATV slowing down in a combat zone is tantamount to suicide. The Mongoose survives most encounters through sheer speed, ensuring it is in and out of an enemy position before heavy firepower can be brought to bear on it.
The Mongoose is often used for transportation of messages, documents and light cargo between units. It is additionally used by forward observers, sniper teams and reconnaissance personnel for rapid transportation.

It can be used as a last resort offensive vehicle when the passenger is equipped with heavy armament and is useful for chasing down fleeing enemies or ambush.
Like the M12 Warthog, the Mongoose is a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle capable of going over any obstacle without any difficulty. The vehicle is powered by a 1,000cc liquid-cooled, mid-engine mounted, four-stroke, hydrogen-injected ICE, allowing it to reach at a maximum speed of 95 km/h.The Mongoose has a fuel economy of between 45 and 65 miles-per-gallon (depending on load), though stocking some jerry cans of Nanoreagent hydrocarbot and a carbon feeler can significantly increase the vehicle's range. The Mongoose is not equipped with any sort of radio or GPS system, or even any gauges, leaving users reliant on external means of wireless communication. The Mongoose also contains a front cargo cage, though it is commonplace for UNSC personnel to remove it to allow the vehicle to travel faster and lighter.

The UNSC Elephant Mobile Command Vehicle apparently has a vehicle bay that fits one Mongoose, perhaps to use as a courier during communications black out, a personnel transport in friendly terrain, an advance scout or a last resort escape vehicle.
As the vehicle carries no armament of its own, having a passenger is essential if engaging in a combat zone. Due to its smaller profile, the Mongoose is a difficult target for both slow and fast moving enemy weaponry, as opposed to the Warthog, whose size is somewhat substantial. For quick and practical deployment, the Mongoose can be transported by a Pelican dropship.

It can be viewed as the smaller cousin of the Warthog. Some Halo fans even get it confused with the Warthog because of its shape, size, and purpose.

Operation
Operational history
AMG Transport Dynamics manufactured the first predecessors to the M274 in 2483 and have since released seventeen variants of the vehicle, the M247 ULATV being the most recent. The vehicle was featured in Machines, Materiel and Munitions from the Human-Covenant Conflict, 2525 - Present, a report compiling armaments of the Human-Covenant War.
Lacking built-in weaponry of any kind, drivers are advised to ensure speed at all times during combat. The addition of an armed passenger is recommended, but due to the high speeds and handling problems of the Mongoose, general suppressive fire is all that can be expected.

The Mongoose is more than capable of outrunning the Covenant Ghost, but attempts to combat one in the ATV are ill-advised. The Mongoose is best suited for rapid reconnaissance missions and quick relocation of UNSC sniper teams.
During the Battle of Metisette, Adriana-111 was surrounded by Covenant infantry on rocky terrain. she thought of the Mongoose as "useless" given her then-current situation, as it "just meant you were a biking target"; instead she used the vehicle as a melee weapon against several Grunts.

The Mongoose is impossible to hijack, which is a vital advantage while trying to "splatter" enemies.  Although if there is no one occupying the passenger seat, a player could get in an enemy's Mongoose while he/she is driving and possibly shoot the ground in front of the mongoose or shoot the opponent when he/she gets out. Also, in Halo 3, melees from the passenger seat of any vehicle do damage now, so meleeing the driver works too.
UNSC remarks
*"[The M274] is pretty nimble for its size; add to that the fact that it can do ninety plus kilo papa hotel over uneven terrain and you’ve got the ultimate commando hot rod."

Appearances
*"Speed is the only protection this vehicle provides; it is unarmored, noisy, and prone to roll-over. It demands a level of skill from its operator that is impossible to expect from the rank and file during combat conditions. Those not qualified as expert need not apply."
Halo 3 Campaign
In the Halo 3 campaign they seem to be vitally important on some levels, for quick transportation through cramped and wide open areas. They are especially important on The Storm where the first objective is to chase down a Scarab with a dozen marines mounted on the ATVs, each armed with a Rocket Launcher.  There is another level that has the player use a Mongoose for transport through a UNSC base, which shows how often someone might use it throughout the Campaign.
*"That thing will go from zero to thirty in three seconds on anything short of snow-covered ice."

Halo 3 Multiplayer
*"The M274 doesn't have a radio of its own, isn't equipped with GPS, it doesn't even have any gauges. The only piece of equipment more primitive is the crate it ships in."

Due to the high-speed nature of the Mongoose, it is a very good vehicle for objective based games, such as CTF and Assault. Although passengers are very exposed to enemy fire, the ATV is often moving too fast to hit without a lucky shot or a weapon that can lock on to the Mongoose.

It is not designed for aggressive strikes against an enemy, but rather for a quick recon run, flag snatch or bomb drop. Head-on attacks place the driver and passenger in great danger. If combined with a passenger wielding an M41, the Mongoose becomes a potent Wraith hunter, its high speed and maneuverability allowing it to run rings around the more cumbersome tank. When the passenger is using the MA5C ICWS Assault Rifle the Mongoose can be used for drive-by shootouts on enemies by driving around them, and for suppressive fire.
*"The first thing everybody does is yank the front cargo cage – if you were to carry anything on it your forward visibility would be obstructed out to about six meters – that and less weight equals more speed… anyway it's the first thing everybody does."

If either the passenger or the driver have a Sniper rifle in their possession, then it can become a useful sniper team relocation vehicle.
*"It's a super versatile ATV in the tradition of the Sperry FCMMagLEV and Willys Jeep; without the former’s vulnerable drive train or the latter's innards-rupturing suspension."

Its fast speed and maneuverability make up for its light armor and support.
*"If they're not gonna give us armor they should at least give us a mounted weapon. And you should be able to tow a trailer with it. And, God forbid, you try to ford bodies of water more than seven feet deep."

Involvement in Halo 2
However, it was left on the cutting room floor and Halo 2 launched without it, because this prototype version did not behave as well as Bungie wished. They tried putting dual coaxial machine guns or something similar on the front, as well as making the biped hold a weapon while operating the ATV.  In the end, it wasn't balanced and didn't fit into the gameplay well, so they took it out.  It will appear in Halo 3 as a vehicle for both the single-player campaign and multiplayer.  Bungie finally figured out how to balance it by making the player use a passenger for an effective offense; for you wont stand a chance without a passenger, unless you move fast.

Like the Warthog, Pelican, Elephant, Hornet and the Scorpion, the Halo 2 Mongoose resembles the animal it's named after. Notice in the image to the left the "ears" jutting out on each side of the front and the "eyes" in the windshield. It also resembles a mongoose by its agility, speed, and size. There have been several Halo CE maps with models based off the Halo 2 mongoose, such as Yoyorast Island.  Instead of making the driver weaponless, many modders made the biped hold a gun in one hand and drive with the other.  When throwing grenades, they would stand up off the seat and throw.

**If a player does succeed in splattering an enemy while on the Mongoose, they will earn the achievement Mongoose Mowdown, as long as they are in a ranked free-for-all match.
The Mongoose was originally intended to be put into Halo 2, but was eventually one of many vehicles cut from the game. The Mongoose prototype did not fulfill Bungie's expectations for Halo 2, and although Bungie attempted to add dual coaxial machine-guns to it or an armed passenger, it remained unbalanced and didn't fit into the gameplay. Bungie at the time could not figure out a way to implement it into the campaign, and had trouble getting the physics for it right, stating that the whole thing had a tendency to flip very easily, and gameplay wise, had no purpose as it couldn't be driven with the flag and became virtually useless. The addition of the passenger seat gave rise to whole new possibilities and led to its inclusion in the third game.
*As seen in beta, the Mongoose is able to use the Man Cannon to propel itself into the air by just driving over one.  This is very helpful, for it is quicker to get to the enemy base on Valhalla using this method, rather than any other on the Mongoose.

*The Mongoose has a yellow instruction sticker on the deployable passengers seat, stating the maximum weight for the driver and passenger. It is interesting to note that the driver can weigh about 500 kilograms, the average weight for an actual SPARTAN-II soldier. The passenger can also weigh up to 450 kilograms. A SPARTAN weighs around a half-ton, which translates to around 454.5 kilograms, so carrying around another SPARTAN-II as a passenger is possible; however it would seriously damage the Mongoose's suspension under hard acceleration or braking and even the smallest bump or drop would render the Mongoose useless.

The M274 Ultra-Light All-Terrain Vehicle[2][3](abbreviated M274 ULATV), commonly known as the Mongoose, is a United Nations Space Command light ground reconnaissance vehicle designed by AMG Transport Dynamics.

Design details[edit]

A wire frame profile of the M274 Mongoose ULATV.

The Mongoose is one of the fastest and most maneuverable ground vehicles in the arsenal of the UNSC Marine Corps. It is a highly effective vehicle for reconnaissance, rapid transportation, swift tactical versatility, and for shooting between positions. A smaller cousin to the ubiquitous M831 Troop Transport, the Mongoose is a small ATV capable of carrying a driver in the middle of the vehicle, and features a rear platform that can be used to carry one additional passenger, although official UNSC safety protocols advise against this.[5]

The Mongoose is often used for transportation of messages, documents and light cargo between units. It is additionally used by forward observers, sniper teams and reconnaissance personnel for rapid transportation.

Like the M12 Warthog, the Mongoose is a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle capable of going over any obstacle without any difficulty. The vehicle is powered by a 1,000cc liquid-cooled, mid-engine mounted, four-stroke, hydrogen-injected ICE, allowing it to reach at a maximum speed of 95 kilometres per hour (59 mph).The Mongoose has a fuel economy of between 45 and 65 miles-per-gallon (depending on load), though stocking some jerry cans of Nanoreagent hydrocarbot and a carbon feeler can significantly increase the vehicle's range.[3] The Mongoose is not equipped with any sort of radio or GPS system, or even any gauges, leaving users reliant on external means of wireless communication. The Mongoose also contains a front cargo cage, though it is commonplace for UNSC personnel to remove it to allow the vehicle to travel faster and lighter.[3]

Variants[edit]

Operational history[edit]

AMG Transport Dynamics manufactured the first predecessors to the M274 in 2483 and have since released seventeen variants of the vehicle, the M247 ULATV being the most recent.[5] The vehicle was featured in Machines, Materiel and Munitions from the Human-Covenant Conflict, 2525 - Present, a report compiling armaments of the Human-Covenant War.[3]

During the Battle of Metisette, Adriana-111 was surrounded by Covenant infantry on rocky terrain. she thought of the Mongoose as "useless" given her then-current situation, as it "just meant you were a biking target"; instead she used the vehicle as a melee weapon against several Grunts.[7]

UNSC remarks[edit]

Gameplay[edit]

Main article: Mongoose

The M274 is a smaller, unarmed vehicle that can help a driver and one passneger move across a map. It is especially useful during Capture the Flag.[3]

If the player manages to splatter an enemy player with the Mongoose in a ranked free-for-all Xbox Live playlist in Halo 3, the player will earn the Mongoose Mowdown achievement, Scout shoulders, and five Gamerpoints.

Production notes[edit]

The Mongoose modded into Coagulation in Halo 2.

The Mongoose was originally intended to be put into Halo 2, but was eventually one of many vehicles cut from the game.[8] The Mongoose prototype did not fulfill Bungie's expectations for Halo 2, and although Bungie attempted to add dual coaxial machine-guns to it or an armed passenger, it remained unbalanced and didn't fit into the gameplay.

Trivia[edit]

 • Its first appearance in a book was in The Cole Protocol during the Battle of Metisette. This is also its first appearance chronologically, meaning that the Mongoose entered UNSC service during or prior to 2535.
 • If the player manages to splatter an enemy player with the Mongoose in a ranked free-for-all Xbox Live playlist in Halo 3, the player will earn the Mongoose Mowdown achievement, Scout shoulders, and five Gamerpoints.
