Tovarus was a Jiralhanae Spartan Killer serving the Banished, and a brother to fellow warrior Hyperius.[4] During the Installation 07 conflict in 2560, he and his brother were killed by Spartan-II John-117.[2]
Biography[edit]
Early life and Covenant service[edit]
Tovarus had descended from a long lineage of War Chieftains hailing from the upper echelons of the clan of Warial's Wrath. During his service in the Covenant, he grew weary of the Jiralhanae's place within the empire even after the Jiralhanae became the right hand of the Covenant during the Great Schism. Tovarus saw this changing of the guard as a desperate struggle made by the Prophets, whom he saw as unfit leaders and unworthy of leading the alien alliance, no less the Jiralhanae species' destiny. This was in direct opposition to the traits he saw in leaders such as Atriox and Escharum, which made the Banished a suitable place for Tovarus' skills to be utilized.[1]
Search for the Guardian killer[edit]
- Tovarus: "That only proves the trikala once existed. How can we be certain it is still so?"
- Eto 'Saljhoo: "Because what the Forerunners feared does not die. The Flood is proof enough of that."
- — Tovarus and Eto 'Saljhoo discussing the existence of a Guardian-killing device.[3]
In November 2559, Tovarus served as the second-in-command aboard the drekar Hammer of Fate in orbit of Netherop during Atriox's search for a weapon that allegedly destroyed a Guardian Custode.[3] He then carried a gravity hammer and accompanied as the Warmaster's bodyguard, per the old Sangheili formation for a parley, when Atriox approached the joint UNSC-Swords of Sanghelios on the planet's surface. Tovarus lingered with Atriox to glower at Thel 'Vadam after the Guardian killer was seemingly surrendered to the Banished, then left the planet with the remaining Banished forces.[5]
Battle for Zeta Halo[edit]

Some time after December 13, 2559, during the Installation 07 conflict, Escharum created the Hand of Atriox to honor the memory of Atriox after his alleged death;[6] when Tovarus joined the Hand of Atriox, he saw it as an opportunity to ascend beyond the ranks and tasks he once previously held, as hunting Spartans was a task he viewed as one only the greatest champions could effectively execute.[1] Tovarus participated in the conflict, during which he and Hyperius killed many Spartans, including Theodore Sorel. Later, in May 2560, they were sent by Escharum to hunt down the Spartan-II John-117. He and Hyperius engaged the Spartan after he had destroyed three Kywasky Workshop Gorespike cannons, with Tovarus raining down fire on him with his Grenflekt Workshop Scrap Cannon and Hyperius mounted on his custom Chopper. They were unsuccessful in killing John-117, and both brothers died at the Spartan's hands.[2]
Personality and traits[edit]
Tovarus is an amber-colored Jiralhanae,[3] with reddish-blond hair and beard.[2][5] Proud and boastful, Tovarus seemingly did not think highly of his brother, Hyperius; Tovarus apparently considered him to be a coward.[7]
Equipment[edit]
Tovarus wore ornate black and red power armor with a vaned headdress rising from the brow of his helmet;[5] the armor is equipped with energy shielding and a jump pack. He seemed to favor wielding a Grenflekt Workshop Scrap Cannon in combat. He also carried spike grenades.[2]
Production notes[edit]
Tovarus was portrayed by American actor Keith Szarabajka,[8] who previously lent his voice to the Didact in Halo 4.[9]
