There is more information available on this subject at Sports on the English Wikipedia.

A sport is a recreational activity that is often athletic and competitive in nature. They can range in their extent of organization and professionalism. Different athletic sports prioritize different physical abilities, whether those are strength, speed, and agility. Different cultures and species partake in wildly varying sports.

Types[edit]

Human[edit]

American football[edit]

The design of the RICOCHET-class Mjolnir armor alludes to the helmets and shoulder pads worn by American football players in the 20th and 21st century.[1]

Baseball[edit]

Some form of professional baseball was being played in North America on Earth up until at least 2552. The Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Angels baseball teams were actively playing games, with the Indians playing in Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Ohio.[2] It is not clear if these teams were playing as a part of Major League Baseball or with another professional league. An OEM intermural baseball or softball league is also in action, comprising of teams made up of employees of various corporations. Some known teams are the Misriah Maulers, Hannibal Heavies, Lethbridge Gravitics, Korolev Grizzlies, and Naphtali Omnisports.[3]

Chess[edit]

Chess is prominent in the 26th century, with individuals such as John-117, Catherine Halsey, Cortana, and Thomas Lasky all playing the game at certain points.[4][5][6][7] Additionally, some vehicles used by the United Nations Space Command have been seen sporting decals depicting chess pieces.

Cricket[edit]

During a Flood outbreak on the prison ship Mona Lisa in 2552, a Sangheili prisoner onboard nicknamed Henry defended himself from the parasite with a cricket bat.[8]

Gravball[edit]

Main article: Gravball

Gravball is the most popular human sport in the 26th century.[9] Prominent matches are broadcast out to the public.[10], where some patrons watch them at bars. Some schools, such as Elysium City Primary Education Facility Number 119, are also equipped with gravball courts. The game was a favorite of John-117 during his childhood, thought he was eventually barred from playing because he always won.[5]

Ice hockey[edit]

Ice hockey was still being played professionally on Earth up until at least 2553, with the championship being held in Saint Petersburg and broadcasted live on Waypoint.[11]

Some variation of air hockey also exists in the 26th Century, as a table was present in an arcade on Halleg Street in New Mombasa in 2560.[12]

Pool[edit]

Main article: Moons (game)

A variant of pool called Moons was popular in the 26th century. It contains some revised rules, including reversing the laws of movement. A ball, when struck hard, will move slowly, whereas if it is struck softly, it will move with greater speed.[13]

Racing[edit]

Auto racing encapsulated a variety of motorsport events that enjoyed significant popularity in the early and mid-26th century. These competitions are often long-distance races with competitors driving either "buggies" (most likely some variation of Warthog) or "quads" (most likely some variation of Mongoose).[14][15] One particular race of this type is the Tantalus 10,000, a five-day cross-continental buggy race on the planet of Tantalus. Bella Disztl is a five-time winner of this event.[15]

Rugby[edit]

International rugby was being played until at least some point prior to 2553, with Australia being a participant in and the victor of an unidentified competition.[16]

Soccer[edit]

Edward Buck played soccer during his childhood on Draco III.[17]

Tactical sports[edit]

Some form of tactical sports league was popular enough in the mid-26th century for Misriah Armory to produce the BRXX Lightfire specifically for league play.[18] This sport could share some resemblance to the 21st century sports of airsoft and laser tag.

Jiralhanae[edit]

Tossers[edit]

Main article: Tossers

Tossers is a Jiralhanae game that involved throwing prisoners at an opponent by their limbs, often leading to the dismemberment of those being used.[19][20] This game was also used as a form of interrogation by some Jiralhanae packs.[21][22]

Sangheili[edit]

Floatfighting[edit]

Main article: Floatfighting

Floatfighting is a niche Sangheili sport that consists of hand-to-hand combat in zero-gravity. It was popular among the inhabitants of the Refuge, where the lack of gravity in the colony's Combat Section made for a perfect location to host floatfighting events.

Unggoy[edit]

Hunting rock[edit]

Main article: Hunting rock

Hunting rock is a simple Unggoy game that involves killing small creatures by throwing a rock at them. Participants are scored based on the difficulty of the kill and the score is kept by etching digits into the rock.[23]
