The '''fuel rod cannon''' is a [[Covenant]] vehicle-mounted projectile weapon.{{Ref/Reuse|vis9}} It is a larger and more powerful version of the {{Pattern|Pez'tk|fuel rod gun}}, with anti-vehicle and anti-air applications. It is employed by a variety of vehicles, including [[Type-26 Banshee]]s, [[Ogab'd-pattern anti-aircraft Wraith|Anti-Air Wraiths]] and a variant of the {{Pattern|Rizsheda|Shade}}.

The [[United Nations Space Command]]'s [[Office of Naval Intelligence]] has typically [[Type classification system|type-classified]] the Banshee's fuel rod cannon under the designations of '''Heavy Anti-Armor Weapon/Mounted, Heavy Fuel Rod (Class-3)''' or '''Type-26 Heavy Anti-Armor Weapon/Mounted''' ('''T-26 HAAW/M''').{{Ref/Site|Id=hwbanshee|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/universe/vehicles/banshee|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Universe - Vehicles - Banshee|D=6|M=4|Y=2015}}{{Ref/Book|H4EVG|Page=119}}{{Ref/Book|H4EVG|Detail=Glossary}} Nicknames for the fuel rod cannon include '''Big Green Death''' and '''Green Death'''.{{Ref/Reuse|enc11p339}}
The weapon fires [[fuel rod]]s, caseless projectiles which contain radioactive, highly explosive material encased in a transparent shell. The colloquialism "fuel rod", commonly used by the UNSC to refer to the weapon's ammunition, is technically incorrect;{{Ref/Reuse|vis77}} it originates from the projectiles' resemblance to how nuclear fuel rods are commonly depicted in popular culture.<ref>[http://halo.bungie.net/projects/halo3/content.aspx?link=h3fuelrod '''Bungie.net''': ''Type-33 Light Anti-Armor Weapon'']</ref>

This weapon functions in a similar fashion to the man-portable Type-33 fuel rod gun, but the fuel rods fired by the cannon are larger and more damaging. Most fuel rod weapons, including the T-33, fire ammunition designated as Class-2, which is effective against armor and infantry on short ranges. For anti-air combat, however, the Covenant employ a more effective type of fuel rod, designated as Class-3. Although visually identical to the Class-2 rounds, Class-3 fuel rods are more powerful, have a greater range, and are capable of tracking the heat signatures of vehicles.{{Ref/Reuse|vis9}}

===Usage===
Banshees are equipped with a single fuel rod cannon for attacking hardened ground targets, while Anti-Air Wraiths are fitted with two pods of three. [[Type-26 Shade#Fuel rod Shade|Fuel rod Shades]] are equipped with a single fuel rod cannon. All of these variants fire Class-3 rounds.

==Production notes==

*In ''[[Halo 2]]'', ''[[Halo 3: ODST]]'', ''[[Halo: Reach]]'', ''[[Halo 4]]'', ''[[Halo 2: Anniversary]]'' multiplayer, and ''[[Halo 5: Guardians]]'', [[fuel rod gun]]s are erroneously called fuel rod cannons. Similarly, the [[Phoenix Logs|Phoenix Log]] [[Phoenix Logs/Banished Units/Heavy Grunts|entry]] for [[Heavy|Heavy Grunt]] in ''Halo Wars 2'' also mistakes the {{Pattern|Korva|fuel rod gun}} for a fuel rod cannon. Furthermore, the [[Halo Waypoint]] article for the fuel rod gun incorrectly named the weapon as the fuel rod cannon,{{Ref/Site|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/universe/weapons/fuel-rod-cannon|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Universe - Weapon - Fuel Rod Cannon|D=29|M=10|Y=2015}}, though the article on [[Wraith]]s correctly stated that the anti-air Wraith employs fuel rod cannons.{{Ref/Reuse|hwwraith}} The distinction between the two fuel rod weapons was deliberately established in ''[[Halo: The Essential Visual Guide]]'' and the ''[[Halo Encyclopedia (2022 edition)]]''.
==Trivia==
*According to the [[Halo 3 manual|''Halo 3'' manual]], the Banshee fires Class-2 fuel rods, though this was later seemingly retconned by Halo Waypoint's article on Banshees.{{Ref/Reuse|hwbanshee}}
*In ''[[Halo 3]]'', on [[Heroic]] or [[Legendary]], if an Anti-Air Wraith gets a direct hit on the player, it will kill him/her instantly. However, it is rather rare for an Anti-Air Wraith to attack ground targets.
*In ''Halo 3'' and ''Halo 3: ODST'', in a similar case to the fuel rod gun, fuel rods fired from an NPC’s fuel rod cannon have an enhanced lock-on ability, which players are unable to access. However, in ''[[Halo: Reach]]'' and ''[[Halo 5: Guardians]]'', it is possible for the player to use this feature.
*In ''[[Halo 3]]'' and ''[[Halo 3: ODST]]'' in a similar case to the fuel rod gun if an NPC is flying the vehicle and shoots the ''Banshee Bomb'' and it will have an even stronger lock-on, but yet again when the player attempts this it will lack said feature, however in ''[[Halo: Reach]]'' and ''[[Halo 5: Guardians]]'' it is possible for the player to use this feature.
*The fuel rod cannon on Banshees have been nicknamed "Banshee bomb" by the developers and the community.{{Ref/Site|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/season-1-outcomes-report|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Season 1 Outcomes Report <nowiki>|</nowiki> Halo Infinite|D=29|M=5|Y=2023}}
*In ''[[Halo 2]]'', ''[[Halo 3: ODST]]'', ''[[Halo: Reach]]'', and ''[[Halo 4]]'' T-33 fuel rod guns are referred to as fuel rod cannons.

The fuel rod cannon, sometimes known as plasma flak cannon,[11] is a vehicle-mounted projectile weapon typically used by the Covenant and its remnants on a variety of their vehicles, notably including Skyhunter Wraiths,[7] Banshees,[1][8] and Seraphs.[2] As its name suggests, the fuel rod cannon fires Class-3 fuel rods, which have a greater range and a capability to track heat signatures when compared to their Class-2 counterparts, which are typically loaded in the infantry-portable fuel rod gun.[10]

The United Nations Space Command's Office of Naval Intelligence has typically type-classified the Banshee's fuel rod cannon under the designations of Heavy Anti-Armor Weapon/Mounted, Heavy Fuel Rod (Class-3) or Type-26 Heavy Anti-Armor Weapon/Mounted (T-26 HAAW/M).[12][13][14] Nicknames for the fuel rod cannon include Big Green Death and Green Death.[9]

Overview[edit]

Design details[edit]

Fuel rod cannons, though sharing many properties with the Mgalekgolo's assault cannon,[15] fire Class-3 fuel rod caseless projectiles, which contain radioactive, highly explosive material encased in a transparent shell.[16] The Class-3 fuel rods fired by the cannon are larger and more destructive than their Class-2 counterparts, which are intended for armor and infantry on short ranges. For long range or anti-air combat, however, the Class-3 fuel rods are more powerful, have a greater range, and are capable of tracking the heat signatures of vehicles.[10] They are marginally weaker than a plasma mortar, but travel at a higher velocity with a higher accuracy.[9] Variants exist within the fuel rod cannon classification: for example, whereas the Banshee employs a forward-firing, semi-automatic single cannon, the Ogab'd-pattern anti-aircraft Wraith employs triple-rack rapid-fire fuel rod cannons that fire a barrage of fuel rods.[2][17]
