Capital ship: Difference between revisions

'''Capital Ships''' are the most important and largest [[warships]]; the ones with the heaviest firepower and armor. There is usually no formal criterion for the classification, other than the fact that these ships tend to be heavily armed and armored. But despite the vagueness of this category, it is still a useful concept when thinking about strategy, for instance to compare relative naval strengths in a theater of operations without having to get bogged down in the exact details of tonnage and gun variants. A capital ship is generally a leading or primary ship in a [[fleet]], battlegroup, or Strike Force.

Capital ships are a classification of spacecraft. The definition of a capital ship depends on the individual faction and the ship class. As an example: the large and heavily armed Phoenix-class is considered a support vessel in the UNSC,[Note 1] while the Marathon-class heavy cruiser, which is nearly half its size, is considered a capital ship.[2]

Types[edit]

Covenant[edit]

Human[edit]

Main article: UNSC starship

Ensigns typically did not pilot UNSC capital ships.[10]

Prehistoric human[edit]

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ According to The Essential Visual Guide (page 188), Phoenix-class ships used by the UNSC are designated as support vessels rather than colony ships.
  2. ^ While Halo: Shadow of Intent refers to the Zanar-pattern light cruiser Spear of Light as a capital ship, it had been heavily modified by San'Shyuum Prelates to be more effective than other examples of its class, and may have been an anomaly.
