The M149 Recoilless Rifle, also known as the Magellan, is a United Nations Space Command weapon used during the Human-Covenant War.[1]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
The M149 Magellan is a recoilless rifle, mounted on the left shoulder of the HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Mark I ADS. The weapon is capable of firing 105mm high-explosive rounds, and can hold up to 50 rounds in its magazine.[2]
Operational history[edit]
The Magellan was employed during the Algolis Invasion. During the battle, a Marine with the call sign "Ghost" took the research facility's Mark I ADS prototype, and used it in defense of the civilians and fellow Marines still on the planet. Ghost used the suit's mounted M149 to take kill a large number of Covenant infantry, shoot down several Irdnekt-pattern Banshees and destroy a Ru'swum-pattern Phantom before he was overwhelmed by the invaders. He then activated the suit's nuclear self-destruct system, destroying himself, the suit and all nearby Covenant forces.[2]
A similar weapon was later installed on the right arm of the successive Mark I [J].[3]
Trivia[edit]
Ferdinand Magellan was a famous 16th century explorer, known for being the first to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
