Plot synopsis
Divine Wind picks up where Shadows of Reach left off, inside a slipspace bubble as the reader is reintroduced to the story's main characters; Veta Lopis and the Ferrets (Ash, Olivia and Mark). The group are undercover aboard the Banished Lich Pegoras, stolen by the Keepers of the One Freedom as it makes its way from Reach to Installation 00 to initiate the Great Journey at the behest of the dokab leading the group, Castor. The Keepers' craft makes its way to the Ark to emerge in the midst of a fierce battle being waged just outside the exit portal in orbit around the Ark. The Lich exits slipspace into a barrage of oncoming plasma and artillery courtesy of the local Banished and UNSC forces competing for the portal - the only way to access or leave the region surrounding the Ark. With Castor having betrayed the Banished leader, Atriox, by stealing the Lich and escaping to the Ark, Castor is now not only attacked by UNSC forces but also the forces of the Banished. Through a very rough and lucky ride after existing the portal, Castor and company narrowly make their way down toward the Ark to initiate the firing of the Halo Array - a process they refer to as "Divine Wind". Along the way down to the Ark's surface, the Lich and crew come face another issue; the remnants of the Covenant. Potentially facing a four-way war between the Keepers, Covenant, Banished and UNSC forces on the Ark, Castor ends up making a forced pact with the prelate leader of the loyalists, Dhas Bhasvod, to work with the Covenant remnants toward the common goal of firing the Halo array.
Veta notices that things are going bad for their company when they are heavily outnumbered and outgunned. When the Lich crashes on the Epsilon Spire, the remaining crew are surrounded by the former Covenant forces and ushered into a pact with their leader, an elite augmented San'shyuum named Dhas Bhavod. Dhas decides to spare their lives once he learns that Castor has two things he needs to activate Halo, an "oracle" (the ancilla Intrepid Eye) and Human bodies - for their reclaimer status. Once Veta learns of this, she attempts to further sabotage their plan by starting a fight among the two groups to slow them down and send a message to the UNSC forces at the Ark consisting of the Spirit of Fire for backup or bombardment. The message is later found by Banished forces and they attempt to set a trap further down the line.

Official summary[edit]

October 2559. With the galaxy in the suffocating grip of a renegade artificial intelligence, another perilous threat has quietly emerged in the shadows: the Keepers of the One Freedom, a fanatical and merciless Covenant splinter group, has made its way beyond the borders of the galaxy to an ancient Forerunner installation known as the Ark. Led by an infamous Brute named Castor, the Keepers intend to achieve what the Covenant, in all its might, failed to: activate Halo and take the last steps on the path of the Great Journey into transcendence…

But unknown to Castor and his new, unexpected ally on the Ark, there are traitors to the cause in their midst—namely the Ferrets, composed of Office of Naval Intelligence operative Veta Lopis and her young team of Spartan-IIIs, who have been infiltrating the Keepers to lay the groundwork for Castor’s assassination. But with ONI’s field operations now splintered and cut off by the Guardian threat, Veta’s original mission has suddenly and dramatically escalated in scope. There’s simply no choice or fallback plan—either the Ferrets somehow stop the Keepers or the galaxy faces an extinction-level event….[3]

Trivia[edit]

  • The novel's title makes reference to the Prophet of Mercy's quote in Halo 2 when he describes Installation 05 and how it will begin the Covenant's Great Journey. It is also a reference to a quote from the Psalm of the Journey on page 3: "the galaxy will be cleansed by a Divine Wind."
    • The term "Divine Wind" is also a direct translation from "Kamikaze" in Japanese.
