UNSC Trafalgar was a Punic-class supercarrier in service with the UNSC Navy, serving as the flagship of the Epsilon Eridani Fleet.[9] Trafalgar was destroyed over Reach in August 2552 when the Covenant attacked the planet.[7]
UNSC Trafalgar was named after the Battle of Trafalgar, a decisive naval engagement during the Napoleonic Wars between the British Empire and the French and Spanish Empires.[4][5]
Service history[edit]
UNSC Trafalgar served the UNSC as the flagship for the carrier strike group at the core of the Epsilon Eridani Fleet, charged with the protection of the Epsilon Eridani system and the naval base at Reach.[9] Given the Punic-class' origins as a Colonial Military Authority (CMA) project,[1][2] it is unclear whether the Trafalgar served under the CMA banner during the Insurrection.
By 2552, most Punic-class vessels had been destroyed in the brutal space warfare of the Human-Covenant War.[1][2] As such, Trafalgar was revered among UNSC Navy personnel as one of the only surviving examples of the class, and as the flagship for the overall fleet.[1][2][4][5]
Trafalgar was ultimately destroyed in the fighting over Reach in August 2552.[7][4][5]
Trivia[edit]
The Halo Encyclopedia (2009 edition) and its 2011 reprint strangely claims that Trafalgar was destroyed by the "first Covenant flagship ever seen by humanity".[4][5] This may be one of the original encyclopedia's many errors, and intended to refer to the Kewu-pattern battleship - the hitherto-unknown "sniper ship" that was first encountered by humanity in the Fall of Reach in the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach.
In the core rulebook for Halo: Fleet Battles, the Punic-class is referred to instead as the "Trafalgar-class" supercarrier, in reference to then-upcoming ship models that had yet to be released for the game. This was later changed for the final release of the carrier to the Punic-class name.[10]
