Jai was eventually sent to meet with Dr. Catherine Halsey. However, he was also told that the drug reacted badly to children, sometimes erasing their entire memories. The night after the discussion with Dr. Halsey, Jai made one final escape attempt, but after catching up with Adriana, he decided that it would be best to return to the base. The next day, Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez introduced Jai and Adriana to Mike-120, who admitted to stealing a Pelican by himself and blowing it up when the UNSC came after him. These three later became Gray Team, a specialized SPARTAN-II squad that preferred to be far from the chain of command, but deeply enjoyed fighting the rebels and the Covenant behind their own lines. After surviving the augmentation process, Jai became the leader of Gray Team.

Later career
Late Human-Covenant War and Operation: SUNSPEAR
In 2551, Jai and the rest of Gray Team was deemed too inaccessible to be recalled to Reach. They were not present when the Covenant invaded the planet, having been out of contact for about a year. This was not cause for undue concern, as many of Gray Team's missions had been executed in a similar fashion.

This was not cause for undue concern, as many of Gray Team's missions had been executed in a similar fashion.

Personality and traits
After Reach fell to the Covenant in 2552 and the extinction of humanity seemed imminent, the Office of Naval Intelligence deployed Jai and Gray Team on a mission to retaliate against Sangheili Fleetmasters who had glassed human worlds. The mission, dubbed Operation: SUNSPEAR, had Gray Team traveling to the Sangheili colony world of Glyke in a Prowler and destroying it with a NOVA bomb. As they were traveling to Glyke, Gray Team received a Condition Endgame order which stated that the Covenant had discovered the Sol system and had launched an attack. After this point, their Prowler's long-range communication equipment had been damaged, cutting them off from the wider UNSC. After arriving at Glyke with no knowledge that the war had ended, Gray Team voted to detonate the NOVA bomb, despite evidently not coming to a unanimous consensus. They landed on this surface to some opposition, planted the device, and retreated back into orbit to observe the detonation. The explosion completely destroyed Glyke and severely damaged Gray Team's Prowler, forcing them to evacuate in a Bumblebee escape craft. After a few days of waiting for retrieval, Jai and the rest of Gray Team entered Cryo chambers and entered cryosleep in hopes of being retrieved by friendly forces. After several years, they were recovered in the debris field of Glyke by Rojka 'Kasaan and stored on board the Unwavering Discipline until their fates were decided by Rojka.
Like the rest of Gray Team, Jai enjoyed dangerous, difficult and life-risking missions behind enemy lines. His position of leadership was a somewhat tenuous one. Both Adriana and Mike did not truly acknowledge his command of the squad, somewhat to Jai's dismay. As a child during the Spartan training, Jai became friends with Adriana-111 and the two would often escape training compounds on Reach just for the thrill, rather than actually attempting to abandon the project.

Jai had little care of insurgents. He was originally unwilling to protect the lives of the Rubble's residents, as he considered them all rebels and Covenant-sympathizers. He disproved of Adriana's apparent favouritism of Ignatio Delgado, calling him Adriana's "pet Insurrectionist".
Carrow Conflict
Awakening and escape
In 2558 at the onset of the Carrow Conflict, Jai and the rest of Gray Team were released from their cryo chambers by UEG envoy Melody Azikiwe while the Unwavering Discipline was being boarded by Thars 'Sarov's forces. Jai then checked on the injured Melody before being attacked by Rojka and Mrata, the latter of which was killed by Adrianna. They then recovered their Bumblebee escape craft from a hanger and escaped the ship. Jai then survived the subsequent crash landing in the Uldt Desert, pulled Melody from the craft, and helped push the wreck into an oasis in order to smother a fire.

The Uldt Desert and Gila Station
After learning more of the post-war situation from a recently awoken Melody, they began traveling on foot towards Gila Station in the northern part of the Karfu Mountains. Jai also learned that the Human-Covenant War ended in December of 2552, meaning that Gray Team destroyed Glyke after the conclusion of the war. During this trip, Jai experienced how broken his team was, with Mike expressing anger over being a constant soldier and Adrianna refusing to speak to them. Ninty-six kilometers out from their destination, Gray Team was engaged by a Banshee, which they promptly destroyed. Arriving at Gila Station, they were admitted into the facility by Commander Greg van Eekhout, whose pleasant demeanor earned the team's distrust. Jai stayed to watch over Melody's surgery while Mike and Adrianna tried to glean more information about the facility. After the envoy awoke, Gray Team confronted Melody and Van Eekhout over being deployed into the Carrow Conflict. This led to the team discussing Operation: SUNSPEAR for the first time since they carried it out. They were then briefed by Melody and Van Eekhout on the threat posed by the Jiralhanae Chieftain Hekabe and the Sharquoi situated below the city of Suraka. Sometime after the briefing, Jai spoke with Melody privately, stating that he would work to contain the Sharquoi but he could not guarantee Adrianna and Mike's cooperation. Gila Station was then attacked by a Sangheili assault team led by Thars. Jai and the rest of Gray Team were ordered to leave Melody and Van Eekhout behind and take the station's Warthog to Suraka to assist in the fight. They briefly discussed if they should return to the station to save Melody, but ultimately decided that the situation in Suraka was more important.

Entering Suraka
Ten minutes outside of the city, Gray Team was engaged by one of Thar's Banshees, which was eventually destroyed by Adriana while Jai drove. During this skirmish, they witnessed human ships making their attack run as a part of Operation: BUZZHAWK and felt the subsequent crash of the destroyed Jiralhanae cruiser Foebane. They were then engaged by two Voice of Maardoth Banshees. Adriana took out one before the other was destroyed by a squad of Surakan Militia Volunteers soldiers. This squad, led by Sergeant Rae Carson, took Gray Team to a bunker where they allowed themselves to be detained and disarmed as a show of good faith. They then waited to relay their information regarding the Sharquoi to the Surakan leadership. After the initial Sharquoi attack, they were moved to a different bunker on the outskirts of the city where they were questioned by Governor Ellis Gass and Vice-governor Lamar Edwards. From this exchange, a plan to assassinate Hekabe was put into motion. Before they started the operation, Gray Team was joined by Rojka and his remaining forces, who had recovered Melody from Gila Station and pledged themselves to fight against Hekabe and the Sharquoi. Both groups were deployed alongside Sergeant Carson's squad to skyscrapers overlooking the crater where Hekabe was commanding the Sharquoi. Mike and Adrianna were tasked with locating and taking out the target while Jai attempted to provide assistance to Surakan militia members who were battling the Sharquoi in the streets, catching the attention of one of the monsters.

Ambush on Thars
After the assassination attempt failed, Gray Team retrieved Rojka and fled the building in a Pelican dropship, witnessing the detonation of a dozen Surakan thermobaric mines around the edge of the crater and a portion of the Sharquoi retreating back into the Forerunner facility at the center of the crater. They were then transported to the Surakan command bunker, where they devised a plan with Rojka to engage Thars and force him to keep his fleet from falling into the hands of the Sharquoi. They secured a Pelican and traveled into the Uldt Desert along with Melody in order to meet with Thars in a faux prisoner transfer and duel between the two Sangheili. They were able to ambush Thars and his forces with the help of Rojka's last surviving warriors. However, the Spirit dropship that they intended to capture and take to the rival Sangheili's fleet was destroyed in the battle, leaving them powerless to stop the Sharquoi from taking over Thar's fleet.

Battle of the Sharquoi Hive
Battle of the Sharquoi Hive
Gray Team, Rojka, and Melody were then met by Ellis, who laid out a plan for defeating Hekabe and his forces. She had rigged a M68 Gauss cannon with a HAVOK tactical nuclear weapon as a power source, creating a device that fired a concentrated Electromagnetic pulse. This blast would neutralize the vertex, leaving Hekabe unable to command the Sharquoi. Gray Team then refined the plan, suggesting that they enter the Forerunner facility via aerial insertion and mount the device on a M121 Jackrabbit as opposed to a Warthog. The team was deployed into the structure alongside a militia squad led by Corporal Wyse, with Jai dropping with Ellis strapped to her back. He then climbed onto the Jackrabbit as the team advanced across a bridge towards Hekabe's position, dismounting to engage the Sharquoi. After the Jackrabbit was immobilized by a falling Sharquoi, Jai ripped the device from it's mount and carried it towards Hekabe's position while Adrianna and Mike provided covering fire. After Ellis fired the device and took control of the vertex for herself, Jai, the rest of Gray Team, and Rojka were then immobilized by Sharquoi who were under her control. Jai's shoulder was nearly ripped out of its socket due to this immobilization. Ellis then informed the team that she planned to detonate the nuke and they all had ten minutes to evacuate the facility. The team fled up the stairs, with Jai observing that they would not make it out of the Forerunner complex in time. A ways from the entrance to the facility, the team was picked up by a Pelican that was hailed for them by Ellis. They were able to escape the nuclear blast, though their Pelican was caught in the shockwave and crashed with no casualties.

Rejoining the UNSC
After a UNSC force arrived on Carrow, Gray Team and Melody were taken aboard the Welcome to the Snipehunt and received a hero's welcome from the crew while exiting their Pelican. They then were escorted to a meeting with ONI Commander Ivrin Yarick, where Melody was dismissed from ONI service. Yarick then offered Jai and the rest of Gray Team a choice: either allow their unit to be decommissioned and assigned to other areas of the UNSC's operation, or they could continue to operate under ONI's supervision as a part of an interspecies strike force consisting of members of the Swords of Sanghelios. They collectively chose the latter option. Jai and the rest of Gray Team are now stationed on the Winter Perilous Contest as a part of this strike team.

Petty Officer Jai-006 is a SPARTAN-II supersoldier and a member of Gray Team.

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

As a child, Jai was an orphan living on Bhuj until he was conscripted into the SPARTAN-II program in 2517.[3] When he was told that he had been conscripted, he attempted to leave the compound, but one of the trainers was able to take hold of him.[1] Over the next five months, he repeatedly attempted escape with another SPARTAN-II, Adriana-111. Every attempt ended in capture, but this only strengthened Jai's resolve to keep trying new escape strategies. The trainers, after suffering broken ankles, lost eyes, fingers and toes, eventually chose to shoot them with darts from the troop bays of Pelicans, after they tried unsuccessfully to capture them using stun devices on the ground.[4]

Formation of Gray Team[edit]

Jai was eventually sent to meet with Dr. Catherine Halsey. Upon telling her that he wanted to go home, she gave him the option to leave the SPARTAN-II program, on the condition that he undergo selective neural paralysis. She informed him that should he choose to attempt another escape, he would be shot with a neural paralysis dart and awaken in a city with no memories of the last five months. However, he was also told that the drug reacted badly to children, sometimes erasing their entire memories. Continuing her speech, she went deeper into his head, asking him how he would feel if he forgot Adriana, whom he seemed to like a lot, and telling him that the orphanage he used to live in hadn't noticed he had been missing.[Note 2] The thought of losing his memory was enough to discourage any more escapes.[5]

The night after the discussion with Dr. Halsey, Jai made one final escape attempt, but after catching up with Adriana, he decided that it would be best to return to the base. The next day, Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez introduced Jai and Adriana to Michael-120, who admitted to stealing a Pelican by himself and blowing it up when the UNSC came after him. These three later became Gray Team, a specialized SPARTAN-II squad that preferred to be far from the chain of command, but deeply enjoyed fighting the rebels and the Covenant behind their own lines. After surviving the augmentation process, Jai became the leader of Gray Team.[6]

Battle of the Rubble[edit]

During the Human-Covenant War, Jai and the rest of Gray Team operated behind enemy lines, wreaking havoc on both the Covenant and the remaining rebels. They flew through Covenant and Insurrectionist-held space, looking for targets of opportunity, in their ship and base, the freighter Petya.[7]

In 2535, Jai and the other members of Gray Team were sent behind enemy lines in order to destroy the navigation data held by the survivors of Madrigal, a world in the 23 Librae system that had been glassed by the Covenant not long after Harvest. The survivors were living in the Rubble, an asteroid space station built by the insurrectionists orbiting Hesiod. A small fleet of Kig-Yar, led by Reth, had created an alliance with the insurrectionists to trade weapons and slipspace drives.[8] However, these Kig-Yar were ordered by the Prophet of Truth to steal data from the humans that would lead the Covenant to other human colonies and Earth.

Later, Adriana returned to the Petya with Ignatio Delgado, a resident of the Rubble that was attempting to find information about the Kestrel. Jai disapproved of Adriana's apparent favoritism of Delgado, who he believed was an Insurrectionist and did not trust.[9] While aboard the Petya, the Spartans were contacted by the Rubble's artificial intelligence, Juliana. Despite their attempts to originally prevent her from communicating, the Spartans eventually agreed to hear Juliana out. In exchange for defending the Rubble from the Covenant, Juliana agreed to give the Spartans the data they wanted.[10]

Shortly before the Battle of the Rubble, Jai was assigned to rescue Delgado after he had been wounded by Peter Bonifacio.[11] He ended up finding Delgado, barely alive, and Diego Esquival, who had been killed. Delgado told Gray Team that Bonifacio was stealing the navigation data so he could sell it to Reth.[12]

Gray Team then formulated a plan to stop Bonifacio and the Covenant. Jai had the idea of freeing the captured crew of the UNSC Midsummer Night in order to have a substantial fighting force, while Adriana and Mike chased after Bonifacio.[13] He personally released the crew, including Lieutenant Jacob Keyes, and briefed them on the situation.[14] Alongside ODSTs led by Faison, Jai stormed the Kig-Yar ship Infinite Spoils. When Thel 'Vadamee, Zhar, and some Unggoy boarded the Infinite Spoils in an attempt to retake the ship, Jai, who was informed by Delgado that Faison was lying injured in the ship, attempted to find the ODST. He ran into Thel and Zhar, and managed to match Thel in combat.[15] He realized that they had already killed Faison, and returned to Keyes afterward.

After returning to the relative safety of Habitat Tiago, Jai had an idea: Keyes had all of his forces suit up and prepare for vacuum exposure, while only a few Covenant were prepared. With the help of the AI Juliana, they could blow the atmosphere out of the habitat, killing most of the Kig-Yar forces.[16] After some hesitation, Delgado handed Jai-006 the AI chip containing Juliana in order to depressurize the habitat and kill the Kig-Yar who were not in a sealed suit. The resulting loss of atmosphere killed off a majority of the front line Kig-Yar, allowing the ODSTs to kill the snipers and push back to the Petya to begin preparations for the Kig-Yar naval assault.[17]

Battle of Metisette[edit]

Main article: Battle of Metisette

The remaining UNSC forces soon discovered the hundreds of thousands of Unggoy living nearby on Metisette, preparing to mobilize.[18] Jai was in favor of abandoning the Rubble since none of the endangered residents were loyal to the UNSC, although Keyes was able to convince him to fight the Covenant. He led a group of ODSTs on Metisette, including Mutuku, Jones, and Adams.[19] They were tasked with placing a Shiva-class nuclear missile in the Redoubt, which they accomplished quickly. Shortly after the Covenant anti-aircraft guns were silenced, they were evacuated from Metisette, and the nuke went off, damaging the Redoubt.[20]

Eventually, the Spartans were picked up by Delgado in a Pelican and they returned to the remains of the Rubble. All remaining UNSC and insurgent personnel were lead to the Exodus asteroid or aboard the Midsummer Night. The asteroid, powered by slipspace drives, and the frigate escaped into slipspace to escape a large Covenant fleet entering the system.[21]

The Exodus asteroid and the Midsummer Night safely arrived at the 18 Scorpii system. The asteroid's inhabitants are safely evacuated before the asteroid shakes itself to pieces while in orbit around the human colony of Falaknuma.[22] After, Jai and Gray Team meet with Admiral Preston Cole and Commander Hadley who grants them the use of a UNSC Prowler, as the Petya was abandoned in the 23 Librae system. Hadley gave the Spartans new orders to venture even further into enemy lines, much to the satisfaction of the Spartans.[23] After the events in The Rubble, Gray Team spent a majority of the Human-Covenant War behind enemy lines, often targeting and assassinating prominent commanders and religious leaders.[24]

Late Human-Covenant War and Operation: SUNSPEAR[edit]

In 2551, Jai and the rest of Gray Team was deemed too inaccessible to be recalled to Reach. They were not present when the Covenant invaded the planet, having been out of contact for about a year. This was not cause for undue concern, as many of Gray Team's missions had been executed in a similar fashion.[25]

After a few days of waiting for retrieval, Jai and the rest of Gray Team entered Cryo chambers and entered cryosleep in hopes of being retrieved by friendly forces.[24] After several years, they were recovered in the debris field of Glyke by Rojka 'Kasaan and stored on board the Unwavering Discipline until their fates were decided by Rojka.[26]

Carrow Conflict[edit]

Awakening and escape[edit]

In 2558 at the onset of the Carrow Conflict, Jai and the rest of Gray Team were released from their cryo chambers by UEG envoy Melody Azikiwe while the Unwavering Discipline was being boarded by Thars 'Sarov's forces.[27] Jai then checked on the injured Melody before being attacked by Rojka and Mrata, the latter of which was killed by Adrianna.[26] They then recovered their Bumblebee escape craft from a hanger and escaped the ship.[28] Jai then survived the subsequent crash landing in the Uldt Desert, pulled Melody from the craft, and helped push the wreck into an oasis in order to smother a fire.[29][30]

The Uldt Desert and Gila Station[edit]

After learning more of the post-war situation from a recently awoken Melody, they began traveling on foot towards Gila Station in the northern part of the Karfu Mountains. Jai also learned that the Human-Covenant War ended in December of 2552, meaning that Gray Team destroyed Glyke after the conclusion of the war.[31] During this trip, Jai experienced how broken his team was, with Mike expressing anger over being a constant soldier and Adrianna refusing to speak to them.[32] Ninty-six kilometers out from their destination, Gray Team was engaged by a Banshee, which they promptly destroyed.[33] Arriving at Gila Station, they were admitted into the facility by Commander Greg van Eekhout, whose pleasant demeanor earned the team's distrust. Jai stayed to watch over Melody's surgery while Mike and Adrianna tried to glean more information about the facility. After the envoy awoke, Gray Team confronted Melody and Van Eekhout over being deployed into the Carrow Conflict. This led to the team discussing Operation: SUNSPEAR for the first time since they carried it out.[24] They were then briefed by Melody and Van Eekhout on the threat posed by the Jiralhanae Chieftain Hekabe and the Sharquoi situated below the city of Suraka.[34] Sometime after the briefing, Jai spoke with Melody privately, stating that he would work to contain the Sharquoi but he could not guarantee Adrianna and Mike's cooperation. Gila Station was then attacked by a Sangheili assault team led by Thars. Jai and the rest of Gray Team were ordered to leave Melody and Van Eekhout behind and take the station's Warthog to Suraka to assist in the fight.[35] They briefly discussed if they should return to the station to save Melody, but ultimately decided that the situation in Suraka was more important.[36]

Entering Suraka[edit]

Ten minutes outside of the city, Gray Team was engaged by one of Thar's Banshees, which was eventually destroyed by Adriana while Jai drove. During this skirmish, they witnessed human ships making their attack run as a part of Operation: BUZZHAWK and felt the subsequent crash of the destroyed Jiralhanae cruiser Foebane. They were then engaged by two Voice of Maardoth Banshees. Adriana took out one before the other was destroyed by a squad of Surakan Militia Volunteers soldiers.[37] This squad, led by Sergeant Rae Carson, took Gray Team to a bunker where they allowed themselves to be detained and disarmed as a show of good faith. They then waited to relay their information regarding the Sharquoi to the Surakan leadership.[38] After the initial Sharquoi attack, they were moved to a different bunker on the outskirts of the city where they were questioned by Governor Ellis Gass and Vice-governor Lamar Edwards. From this exchange, a plan to assassinate Hekabe was put into motion. Before they started the operation, Gray Team was joined by Rojka and his remaining forces, who had recovered Melody from Gila Station and pledged themselves to fight against Hekabe and the Sharquoi.[39] Both groups were deployed alongside Sergeant Carson's squad to skyscrapers overlooking the crater where Hekabe was commanding the Sharquoi. Mike and Adrianna were tasked with locating and taking out the target while Jai attempted to provide assistance to Surakan militia members who were battling the Sharquoi in the streets, catching the attention of one of the monsters.[40]

Ambush on Thars[edit]

After the assassination attempt failed, Gray Team retrieved Rojka and fled the building in a Pelican dropship, witnessing the detonation of a dozen Surakan thermobaric mines around the edge of the crater and a portion of the Sharquoi retreating back into the Forerunner facility at the center of the crater.[41] They were then transported to the Surakan command bunker, where they devised a plan with Rojka to engage Thars and force him to keep his fleet from falling into the hands of the Sharquoi. They secured a Pelican and traveled into the Uldt Desert along with Melody in order to meet with Thars in a faux prisoner transfer and duel between the two Sangheili.[42] They were able to ambush Thars and his forces with the help of Rojka's last surviving warriors. However, the Spirit dropship that they intended to capture and take to the rival Sangheili's fleet was destroyed in the battle, leaving them powerless to stop the Sharquoi from taking over Thar's fleet. [43][44]

Battle of the Sharquoi Hive[edit]

Gray Team, Rojka, and Melody were then met by Ellis, who laid out a plan for defeating Hekabe and his forces.[44] She had rigged a M68 Gauss cannon with a HAVOK tactical nuclear weapon as a power source, creating a device that fired a concentrated Electromagnetic pulse. This blast would neutralize the vertex, leaving Hekabe unable to command the Sharquoi.[42] Gray Team then refined the plan, suggesting that they enter the Forerunner facility via aerial insertion and mount the device on a M121 Jackrabbit as opposed to a Warthog.[44] The team was deployed into the structure alongside a militia squad led by Corporal Wyse, with Jai dropping with Ellis strapped to her back. He then climbed onto the Jackrabbit as the team advanced across a bridge towards Hekabe's position, dismounting to engage the Sharquoi.[45] After the Jackrabbit was immobilized by a falling Sharquoi, Jai ripped the device from it's mount and carried it towards Hekabe's position while Adrianna and Mike provided covering fire. After Ellis fired the device and took control of the vertex for herself, Jai, the rest of Gray Team, and Rojka were then immobilized by Sharquoi who were under her control.[46] Jai's shoulder was nearly ripped out of its socket due to this immobilization. Ellis then informed the team that she planned to detonate the nuke and they all had ten minutes to evacuate the facility. The team fled up the stairs, with Jai observing that they would not make it out of the Forerunner complex in time.[47] A ways from the entrance to the facility, the team was picked up by a Pelican that was hailed for them by Ellis. They were able to escape the nuclear blast, though their Pelican was caught in the shockwave and crashed with no casualties.[48]

Rejoining the UNSC[edit]

After a UNSC force arrived on Carrow, Gray Team and Melody were taken aboard the UNSC Welcome to the Snipehunt and received a hero's welcome from the crew while exiting their Pelican. They collectively chose the latter option.[49] Jai and the rest of Gray Team are now stationed on the Winter-class prowler UNSC Perilous Contest as a part of this strike team.[50]

Non-canon and dubious canon appearances[edit]

Silver Timeline[edit]

After trying to run away from Spartan training again, John-117 mentions to Doctor Catherine Halsey that Jai had told him that the young Spartans were forced to come to Reach.[51]

Personality and traits[edit]

Like the rest of Gray Team, Jai enjoys dangerous, difficult and life-risking missions behind enemy lines.[23] His position of leadership is a somewhat tenuous one. Both Adriana and Mike did not truly acknowledge his command of the squad, somewhat to Jai's dismay. As a child during the Spartan training, Jai became friends with Adriana-111 and the two would often escape training compounds on Reach just for the thrill, rather than actually attempting to abandon the project.[52] Jai was known to be a very strong and well-rounded warrior. Melody Azikiwe claimed that he was "an indomitable fighter, even among other Spartans."

Jai had little care of insurgents. He was originally unwilling to protect the lives of the Rubble's residents, as he considered them all rebels and Covenant-sympathizers.[53] He disapproved of Adriana's apparent favoritism of Ignatio Delgado, calling him Adriana's "pet Insurrectionist".[11][54]

After the events of Operation: SUNSPEAR, Jai's personality and appearance temporarily changed in a significant way. His MJOLNIR armor was heavily damaged during fighting on Glyke, with his helmet's visor curling downwards as a result of some incredible impact.[27] He also took full responsibility for the destruction of Glyke and the subsequent fracturing of his team, which manifested as a quiet sorrowfulness and a willingness to accept and take the hostility directed towards him by Adrianna and Mike.[32]

At some point during his time as a soldier, Jai used a HAZOP-class Mjolnir helmet on a Gen1 Mark V core.[50]

Notes[edit]

 1. ^ All Spartan-IIs are given the rank of Petty Officer, Second Class upon graduation
 2. ^ This may be a result of Jai being replaced with a flash clone, as was standard procedure for the SPARTAN-II project; alternatively, it is possible that given Jai's anonymity at the orphanage, no flash clone was needed to replace him and the orphanage simply didn't notice his disappearance.
