The Admiralty Manual of Seamanship Volume II was a book published by the Royal Navy in the 20th century. Once a standard work of reference, by the 26th century copies of the book have become valuable antiques, especially to UNSC Navy personnel. Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood gave ONI Captain Serin Osman a copy, which she regarded as a prized possession.[1]

History[edit]

Published by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty beginning in 1908, the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship was a nautical manual and handbook covering in depth many aspects of the sailing and handling of ships. Equally useful for merchant shipping, it was primarily intended for the officers and men of the Royal Navy. From 1908 to the Admiralty's dissolution in 1964, the manual was published in three volumes; the particulars of each volume differ depending on the edition, but broadly corresponded to introductory, intermediate, and advanced aspects of seamanship. Volume II, a copy of which was owned by Serin Osman, was typically used by junior officers.

After the dissolution of the Admiralty, a new version of the Manual was published by the Ministry of Defence, revised and condensed to focus more specifically on the operations of the Royal Navy. This new version, in one volume, would go through twelve editions by 2015.[2]
