UNSC Canberra (hull classification symbol CA-70) was a Marathon-class heavy cruiser in the UNSC Navy. Canberra served as the flagship for the Fifth Fleet and was commanded by Fleet Admiral Harper. It participated in the Battle of Earth on October 20, 2552.[1]
Service history[edit]
Battle of Earth[edit]
- Main article: Battle of Earth
UNSC Canberra served as the flagship of the Fifth Fleet, composed of UNSC Say My Name, UNSC Feeling Lucky, five other Marathon-class heavy cruisers, and sixty-seven Stalwart-class light frigates. By 2552, UNSC Canberra and the Fifth Fleet were stationed at Earth in the Sol system with the UNSC Home Fleet. When the Covenant Fleet of Sacred Consecration arrived at Earth on October 20, 2552, Fleet Admiral Harper intended to engage the numerically disadvantaged Covenant vessels directly, though Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood instead advised for his fleet to form a defensive perimeter around the Mediterranean cluster of orbital defense platforms. When the two fleets engaged each other, Harper ordered most of the Fifth Fleet to focus on the CAS-class assault carriers.[4]
Trivia[edit]
The ship was likely named after after Canberra, the capital city of Australia. UNSC Canberra shares its hull classification symbol and name with USS Canberra, a cruiser of the United States Navy. The latter ship was renamed to Canberra to honor the loss of HMAS Canberra of the Royal Australian Navy, which in turn was named after the city of Canberra.
