Maiar: What you're referring to is what we call a "stripper clip". I forgot the actual name for it, but it makes sure the rounds go into the magazine quickly and correctly. An actual clip is something like the M1 Garand rifle uses - it is loaded into the rifle, and serves the role of a magazine.
