During The First Battle of Earth, his squad was dispatched from the UNSC In Amber Clad to relieve the ground forces. Their Pelican was shot down over Old Mombasa by a Scarab walker. He survived the crash, but his squad was soon attacked by a Covenant patrol. When the squad was pinned down by a Jackal sniper, Jones, being the squad's own sniper, neutralized the Jackal. An elite then snuck up on the squad and took Jones hostage. His squadmates killed the elite and saved him. His squad then met up with the Master Chief and helped him to take out the Scarab.
