The Inner Colonies are human controlled planets that were terraformed to support life. These planets were colonized first seeing on how close they are from Earth. It was possible to get to these systems by using the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive engine.
Near the end of the battle of the Outer Colonies, numerous ships were pulled from their positions in the Outer Colonies to defend the Inner Colonies. Old ships, such as the Halcyon-class Cruiser, Pillar of Autumn, were refitted and brought back into service to supplement the remaining forces.
