In Halo 2, the rank is the numeric representation of a player's multiplayer experience. Rank can be gained or lost depending on not only the final score of a game, but also on the individual's statistics, and the opposing team's individual ranks. The system responsible for assigning how many experience points a player is awarded is a very complex algorithm. A rank is recorded for every playlist an individual plays in, with the exception of none-ranked gametypes and custom gametypes. There are leader boards for the majority of the playlists, however Bungie has indicated that the leader boards may be removed in the near future. Although players will still be ranked so people with appropriate skill levels will be matched in matchmaking. The leaderboards were reset in the auto-update and have a new ranking system and will not be removed.
