The Spawner is a Flood pure form.[1] They serve the Flood as mobile gestation pods, creating new forms of Flood in the field as the situation requires.[2]

Overview[edit]

Flood Spawners are an example of the Flood's adaptiveness to changing situations; they were first created during the Outbreak on Installation 00 in mid-2559, in response to the defenses put up by the Banished and Sentinels on the Ark.[2] They were first let loose during the Clan of the Long Shields' opening of High Charity's wreckage,[3] before being used to spread the Flood outbreak to new refugia.[2]

The Spawner's most notable feature is the brood sac hanging down from its body. Similarly to static blisters, these sacs can be used to grow infection forms of all kinds.[1] During a Flood assault, Spawners sit near the back of the swarm and continuously spawn Infection forms to continue besieging an enemy force, changing forms depending on the type of enemies they are faced with.[2]

Spawners serve as the Flood's rough equivalent of a troop transport carrier and - in gameplay purposes - the Flood's answer to either the UNSC's M650 Mastodon or the Banished's Wraith Invader, although they function differently than a conventional troop transport.

Spawners will take position in the Fog of War and begin spawning either Pod infectors, Infesters or Seeder infectors, depending on what is effective against the units the player is using. However, Spawners are slow, and will succumb to heavy firepower when faced with a diverse array of units.

Phoenix Log - Spawners

Spawners are pure forms that gestate new infection forms in their diseased brood sacs, releasing swarms of new parasites. Spawners are an example of Flood adaptation, a war-form created specifically to counter the defensive measures of the Ark and Banished.

Highly mobile and capable of independent action, these creatures venture out from High Charity to spread the Flood deep into nearby refugia. Most pockets of Flood infestation Spawners establish will be detected and quickly destroyed, but time and probability is on the parasite's side.

The Spawner lurks at the rear of Flood assaults, spawning waves of infection forms. Spawners must be quickly dealt with, or they will continue to create Flood attack forces just outside the range of base defenses.

Production notes[edit]

In the Halo Encyclopedia (2022 edition), the artwork used to the Spawner and the Infester forms are swapped around - one of several errors in the book. The correct artwork from the Encyclopedia is used at the top of this page.[1]
