Checkman was an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper in the UNSC Marine Corps. In 2544,[1] he took part in Operation: GREY VEIL - a mission to assassinate a Covenant logistics officer on Heian. Checkman was the first trooper killed in the mission, with his drop pod burning up on entry into Heian's atmosphere.[2]

In 2544,[1] Checkman was a part of a team of ODSTs in the 105th Shock Troops Division led by Master Sergeant Cortez, and containing troopers Taylor "Dutch" Miles and O'Brien and serving aboard the Diligence-class destroyer UNSC Kronstadt.
