Plot synopsis[edit]
During her conversation with Athos, Linda questions ONI's motivations for sending her on the mission, claiming that they prized Gabriela over the surviving crew of the UNSC Promise of Dawn. The AI explains the stakes, the level of knowledge that Gabriela contains is not merely a record of human history, but also Earth's secrets and those of every world humanity has called home. Realizing that Chen is the only person who knows Gabriela's location, his status changed from being a target to an asset, at least until the mission is successful. While they were discussing this, Shel speaks to Chen and discovers that he's not working on a navigation unit as he'd claimed. A tense standoff occurs between several of the survivors when Shel calls him out, claiming that he'd trapped them on the planet to die. Covenant forces mobilize for an assault, with the intention of wiping out the survivors, while keeping their data intact, so that they could understand why the UNSC had sent one of its best to the backwater world.
After Linda breaks up the fight, disarming the group with ease, Chen agrees to take the Spartan to the original crash site, ostensibly to retrieve the navigation unit from the ship, hoping to repair the device so that the survivors could evacuate. A journey that would've taken hours to make for a non-augmented human took far less time with Linda's abilities, and the Spartan saved the doctor's life twice before they reached their destination. During the journey, they converse, and Linda has momentary flashes of memory from before her time as a Spartan. Chen shares a little of his own youth, and how that led to his current disenfranchised state. He speaks of revolution and tearing down the UNSC to its foundation. While the survivors pack the new build ship ready for Chen's return, Linda inserts Athos into the ship's systems, and Chen gives her an ultimatum, telling her that he knows why she came, and claiming that he - not the UNSC - represents the best interests of humanity, before activating turrets which take aim at the Spartan.
