The LAU-65D/SGM-151, also known as the Missile Pod, is a portable United Nations Space Command infantry weapon. It is a missile-launching weapon, and holds up to eight small, highly explosive missiles when released from its tripod. The mounted version of the Missile Pod can be seen in the Campaign level The Storm in Halo 3, and again in NMPD headquarters in Halo 3: ODST. When mounted, it has an infinite amount of ammo. The Missile Pod can carry eight rounds when detached, which are less powerful than the M41 rocket launcher, but it can fire continuously without the need for reloading. In its mounted form, the Missile Pod is used by Marines as a rocket-powered mortar by firing its missiles vertically into the sky. This allows the missiles to hit targets from above, inflicting maximum damage and leaving less time for the target to avoid the strike; however, in its mounted form, it can't hit targets on the ground up close easily (it will just fire up into the air and do no damage).

Once the missile is fired, it will travel about five meters before becoming self-propelled. This, along with the pod's ability to maintain a lock even when there's an obstacle (such as a small hill in Valhalla) between the pod and the target, means the wielder can fire at an upward angle, giving the missile enough vertical clearance to fly over the hill and into the target.

Design details
The LAU-65D/SGM-151 missile pod is a predominantly mounted weapon, typically deployed mounted atop a small tripod. When mounted, the launcher faces up at a roughly 45 degree angle. The weapon is capable of being operated by interfacing with an operator's heads-up display, which can be used to select enemy ground and air vehicles for targeting. Once fired, the missile is launched into the air before engaging its automated guidance system and booster - which then track the target's heat signature and deliver the payload in a precision strike from above. This allows the weapon to act in a similar capacity to a more conventional mortar weapon.

It is also effective against foot-bound stationary targets (such as an enemy sniper); the missile's high speed means that even if the target hears the missile, he or she may not be able to react in time. This is most effective at short and medium range, mostly because it is harder to see an enemy at long ranges, much less determining if one is moving. One of the best anti-vehicle tactics is to lock on, aim up in the air, and fire; however, its low ammo capacity when unmounted means it should be used sparingly. Also, on Valhalla, a possible tactic is to carry the missile pod into the Man Cannon while firing at an enemy. The enemy will most likely not see one and will die confused, leaving one able to repeat the trick.
Missile pods are typically fired from a stationary, fixed position, though are capable of being ripped off their stands and hip-fired by personnel strong enough to carry them (such as Spartans and Sangheili). When fired in this manner, the missile pod's projectiles fire directly into the path of their target, skipping the vertical-launch stage of their operation. They may also be mounted directly for defensive atop static walls, or as part of the armament on vehicles.

Tactics
Without a suitable lock-on, the missile pod can be dumb-fired to limited effect. While mounted, this causes the missile to simply fly into the air, while firing it from the hip can allow the missile to be manually aimed at enemy targets.
Campaign
Due to its rarity in the campaign (it only appears on the level The Storm), not many tactics have appeared to support its usage in campaign. If picked up during that level, it can be used to take down the Type-47B Scarab appearing in the level fairly easily, as its lock-on will automatically target its joints and the enemies on board. Presumably, an ambitious player could carry it to the anti-aircraft gun, but accidental usage could waste all of its ammunition. The player could also kill the Arbiter, then quickly drop the Pod next to him; missiles fired by the Arbiter will home in on enemy infantry, as well.

The missile pod also appears in the Halo 3: ODST campaign in the level NMPD HQ in the final area where Dutch and Mickey are holding out. There are two mounted missile pods, and numerous missile pods near the crashed Pelican and you can use them to take out the many Type-26 Banshees and Type-52 Phantoms that appear. As there are many flying enemy vehicles a good tactic would be to keep the missile pods mounted so you can utilize the infinite ammo, as there are other detached missile pods around the pelican which you can use.
Ammunition
The missile pod fires the M5607 Automatic Self-Guided Missile-4, a heat-seeking, armour-piercing, and self-guided high-explosive missile a part of the same series as other larger missiles such as the ASGM-7, ASGM-10 and ASGM-15. The internal magazines in the base of the launcher can hold eight such missiles, which can be rapid-fired in a short amount of time.

Ensure that in both games the missile pod is clear of any debris surrounding it or firing it on an angle that does not have debris obstructing it. In some cases, a player may kill themself by accident if the player did not test fire it first. This commonly happens at NMPD HQ where a player often kills themself without swinging the missile pods away from the construction site debris.
Operational history
The missile pod was used by human military forces during the Battle for Earth in October-November 2552. Several such weapons were operated by the New Mombasa Police Department during the Covenant occupation of New Mombasa on October 20, with Alpha-Nine assisting NMPD personnel in fending off a Covenant air assault on their downed D77C-NMPD Pelican. They were later used by UNSC Marine Corps forces operating in Traxus Factory Complex 09, Voi, during the Battle of Voi on November 17. During the battle, several LAU-65Ds were installed around the factory complex and were used by a force led by John-117 to disable and destroy a Deutoros.

*The Missile Pod can be a weak weapon against infantry. It typically takes a direct missile hit to kill an opponent with one shot. Quite unlike the Rocket Launcher, its splash damage is confined to a smaller area, making it challenging to use in a one-on-one mid-range fight. The pod is extremely deadly against vehicles, however.

*It causes the wielder to fall victim to the high maneuverability of a Ghost, as the wielder is slow due to its' weight. On Valhalla, it is capable of destroying Banshees, M274 Mongooses, M12 Warthogs, and AIE-486H machine guns. On Construct, the missile pod becomes a powerful infantry weapon because the map's architecture allows for quick kills, making it especially useful for killing the sword wielders or campers at the Gravity lifts.
During the Carrow Conflict in 2558, the Surakan Militia Volunteers used missile pods to defend their city against an attack by the Sharquoi unleashed by Hekabe. The creatures proved largely ignorant of the missiles fired at them and were able to shrug off most of the damage dealt.

*It is noteworthy to use in a Big Team Slayer match next, as a few short missiles can take out a central threat, such as an M808 Scorpion, Banshee, or Type-26 Wraith antagonizing your opponents and getting kills for you and your team.
In-game information
Halo 3
The missile pod was introduced in Halo 3 as part of the new class of turret weapons introduced into the game, alongside the machine gun turret, plasma cannon, and flamethrower. Accordingly, the weapon is used in a third-person view. In the campaign, the weapon appears solely in the level The Storm encountered twice in the level - the first as a dismounted weapon in the pier structure of the first lakebed next to a dead Marine. This weapon can be used against the Ogab'd and Ghost vehicles encountered in that section of the level. The second encounter with missile pods comes in the second lakebed of The Storm, with two such weapons deployed by the Marines to help fight off the Scarab. These weapons are turret-mounted, and have an infinite amount of ammunition. They can be used to target the Scarab's legs, turret, and rear power core.

*Using the missile pod against infantry can be deadly but must be a direct hit. When playing an objective game (capture the flag or bomb) bring the missile pod into a room and camp by the flag or bomb area. You can get many kills this way.
In multiplayer, the missile pod fulfils the role of a lock-on missile launcher, similar to the missile launcher cut from Halo: Combat Evolved or the standard M41 SPNKr's lock-on functionality in Halo 2. For Halo 3, the SPNKr's lock-on was taken away from the weapon and additionally considered for use in a separate missile launcher weapon which made it as far as alpha testing, though was ultimately scrapped in favour of the missile launcher concept. The missile pod only ever appears in its un-mounted (and thus, limited ammunition) configuration in multiplayer, with the mounted variant being unable to be spawned in Forge mode. In rare circumstances, the weapon can be used to recreate the "Ring of Rockets" trick similar to Halo 2s rocket launcher.

*This weapon is fantastic against large teams. Its lock on is great against vehicles and, with continuous fire can take down AV-14 Hornets, Warthogs and Banshees.
The missile pod can be used to unlock the Too Close to the Sun achievement in multiplayer, by killing a Banshee.

Trivia
Halo 3: ODST
The missile pod appears in the Halo 3: ODST campaign level NMPD HQ in the final stage of the mission. Several such weapons are deployed (both mounted and detached) around the Pelican crash site. They have identical gameplay to their Halo 3 incarnation, and can be used to shoot down the incoming Banshees and Phantoms.
*On Heroic difficulty, it takes eight rounds of the LAU-65D/SGM-151 to destroy a Phantom; however, it only takes four missiles to the rear section to destroy it because the engines will go critical, which will end up destroying the rest.
*The maximum magazine size of a Missile Pod can be changed in Forge. However, this has no effect on the weapon's actual ammo capacity, which is always 8. Similarly, you can't spawn missile pods mounted on turrets, probably for game balancing reasons, since a missile pod with infinite ammo is a tremendous defensive advantage.
*The Missile Pod can be used to do the Halo 2 "Ring of Rockets" trick.
*Too Close to the Sun is a Halo 3 achievement. It is awarded for destroying a Banshee in either campaign or a ranked multiplayer playlist with a Spartan Laser or Missile Pod. Unlocking this achievement will give you the Scout Body for Spartan Armor Customization. It is represented by a red ten-pointed star with a brown-winged white star.
*In Multiplayer, if a vehicle is locked onto by a Missile Pod, the driver, gunner, or passenger, should hear a droning/buzzing/beeping noise from their HUD as a warning to get out of the vehicle.
*This weapon is some-what similar to the modern-day FGM-148 Javelin, in that both lock-on and shoot their missiles upward and attack from a top-down strike.

The Launcher Unit-65D/Self-Guided Missile-151[1][2] (LAU-65D/SGM-151),[3] also known as the Missile Pod, is a stationary mounted missile launcher manufactured by Ushuaia Armory.[1][2]

The weapon is employed in the United Nations Space Command, and has garnered the nickname of "The Noisemaker" among the personnel assigned to use it.[3]

Overview[edit]

A LAU-65D/SGM-151 missile pod detached from its stand during the Battle of Kenya. From Halo 3 campaign level The Storm.

Design details[edit]

The LAU-65D/SGM-151 missile pod is a predominantly mounted weapon, typically deployed mounted atop a small tripod. When mounted, the launcher faces up at a roughly 45 degree angle. The weapon is capable of being operated by interfacing with an operator's heads-up display, which can be used to select enemy ground and air vehicles for targeting. Once fired, the missile is launched into the air before engaging its automated guidance system and booster - which then track the target's heat signature and deliver the payload in a precision strike from above.[1][2] This allows the weapon to act in a similar capacity to a more conventional mortar weapon.

Missile pods are typically fired from a stationary, fixed position, though are capable of being ripped off their stands and hip-fired by personnel strong enough to carry them (such as Spartans and Sangheili).[1][3][2] When fired in this manner, the missile pod's projectiles fire directly into the path of their target, skipping the vertical-launch stage of their operation. They may also be mounted directly for defensive atop static walls, or as part of the armament on vehicles.[3]

Without a suitable lock-on, the missile pod can be dumb-fired to limited effect. While mounted, this causes the missile to simply fly into the air, while firing it from the hip can allow the missile to be manually aimed at enemy targets.

Ammunition[edit]

The missile pod fires the M5607 Automatic Self-Guided Missile-4,[2] a heat-seeking, armour-piercing,[3] and self-guided high-explosive missile a part of the same series as other larger missiles such as the ASGM-7, ASGM-10 and ASGM-15.[1] The internal magazines in the base of the launcher can hold eight such missiles, which can be rapid-fired in a short amount of time.[1][2][4]

Operational history[edit]

The missile pod was used by human military forces during the Battle for Earth in October-November 2552. Several such weapons were operated by the New Mombasa Police Department during the Covenant occupation of New Mombasa on October 20, with Alpha-Nine assisting NMPD personnel in fending off a Covenant air assault on their downed D77C-NMPD Pelican.[5] They were later used by UNSC Marine Corps forces operating in Traxus Factory Complex 09, Voi, during the Battle of Voi on November 17. During the battle, several LAU-65Ds were installed around the factory complex and were used by a force led by John-117 to disable and destroy a Deutoros-pattern Scarab.[6]

Members of the 717th Xeno-Materials Exploitation Battalion's Charlie Company used missile pods as part of their deployment into the city of Wendosa, Gao, during Operation: JOVIAN WHISTLE.[7]

During the Carrow Conflict in 2558, the Surakan Militia Volunteers used missile pods to defend their city against an attack by the Sharquoi unleashed by Hekabe. The creatures proved largely ignorant of the missiles fired at them and were able to shrug off most of the damage dealt.[8]

In-game information[edit]

Using the missile pod in third-person view on Sandtrap in Halo 3.

Halo 3[edit]

The missile pod was introduced in Halo 3 as part of the new class of turret weapons introduced into the game, alongside the machine gun turret, plasma cannon, and flamethrower. Accordingly, the weapon is used in a third-person view. In the campaign, the weapon appears solely in the level The Storm encountered twice in the level - the first as a dismounted weapon in the pier structure of the first lakebed next to a dead Marine. This weapon can be used against the Ogab'd-pattern anti-aircraft Wraith and Ghost vehicles encountered in that section of the level.

In rare circumstances, the weapon can be used to recreate the "Ring of Rockets" trick similar to Halo 2's rocket launcher.[9]

The missile pod can be used to unlock the Too Close to the Sun achievement in multiplayer, by killing a Banshee.

Halo 3: ODST[edit]

The missile pod appears in the Halo 3: ODST campaign level NMPD HQ in the final stage of the mission. Several such weapons are deployed (both mounted and detached) around the Pelican crash site. They have identical gameplay to their Halo 3 incarnation, and can be used to shoot down the incoming Banshees and Phantoms.
