The Sol system, otherwise referred to as the Solar System, is the home star system of the human species. The system's G-class star is named Sol, hence the system's name. Sol is an average sized star in its main sequence phase, and is the dominant source of light for Earth. According to current definitions, eight planets and five dwarfs planets orbit it, for a total of 13, including the four inner terrestrial planets and the four gas giants, separated by an asteroid belt. Many smaller planetoids also orbit Sol, and many of the system's planets possess moons of varying size and number, such as Earth's satellite, Luna.

Overview
Overview
Sol is most prominently home to Earth, humanity's homeworld and the capital of the Unified Earth Government, as well as many important human colonies which are based on its many planets, moons and asteroids. Many worlds in the system now house habitats suitable for human life, achieved either through extensive terraforming or the use of vacuum-sealed environments. Humanity first colonized the system's worlds beyond Earth in the late 21st and early 22nd centuries, followed by steady growth of the populations on Earth and the off-world colonies throughout the next two centuries before the launch of the first extrasolar colonization program in 2362, enabled by the development of the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine in 2291.

Citizens of the system are referred to as "Solarian".[6]

Help.png This section needs expansion. You can help Halopedia by expanding it.

Rise of humanity[edit]

Humanity had put together joint efforts to colonize the rest of the Sol system by 2080.[11][12] These colonization efforts required the use of cryo chambers due to travel times.[13]

The 22nd-century saw the rise of the Koslovics and Friedens across the solar system.[14] The Jovian Moons Campaign, Mars Campaign, and finally the Interplanetary War would all come out of it.

Just prior to[6] the January 1, 2362 launch of the Odyssey,[15][16] Ixion would become the last chartered solar colony.[6] With the Odyssey's launch, the first wave of human expansion outside the system would take place.[17]

By 2390, the Sol system was becoming increasingly unstable. The UEG was pressured to demilitarize the system, which came in tandem with a second colonization effort of Reach in the Epsilon Eridani system.[18]

Human-Covenant War[edit]

Main article: Human-Covenant War

The first known incursion into the Sol System was on October 10, 2552 by unknown enemies.[19]

On October 20, the Fleet of Sacred Consecration was detected near the moon of Io. Soon after, the Fleet appeared near Earth, commencing the Battle for Earth.[20] Over the next few months, battles on Earth and elsewhere in the system would take place.[19] The Battle of Mare Erythraeum on Mars would take place during this time frame.[21] The UNSC Home Fleet would be utterly devastated by November 17 with the arrival of the Anodyne Spirit and Truth's fleet.[22] One of final skirmishes on Earth would take place on December 3, during Operation: MARSH FLASH.[19]

Despite massive Covenant assault across the Sol system even on Sol colonies' cities,[23] many of the human population centers of Sol colonies, such as Mars, and Luna in the system survived the assault relatively intact,[24] although the majority of Earth habitats have been destroyed.[25] In aftermath of the Battle for Tribute with the loss of over half of the population on Tribute, Earth was unable to afford to spare any immediate assistance with Sol’s colonies that has been left in ruins during the Covenant onslaught on the Sol system.[26]

Post-war[edit]

Main article: Created uprising

Following the war in 2555, Mars played host to a joint-operations training exercise, Operation: FOCUS LENS 2555 - tasked with simulating a second Covenant invasion of the Sol system.[27]

With the arrival of the Created's Guardians during The Reclamation, Forerunner facilities across the system triggered failsafe mechanisms making them temporarily inert or inaccessible.[28] Following their arrival, Sol territories fell under the control of the Created and started broadcasting their signals.[29]

Non-canon and dubious canon appearances[edit]

Silver Timeline[edit]

Main article: Silver Timeline
HTV-SilverTeam logo.png
This article contains information about the Silver Timeline, and is not a part of the established Halo canon.

The Sol system, also referred to as the Capital System, is a planetary system that includes Mercury, Earth, the Oort Cloud, and Jupiter. It is home to billions. Intrasystem travel is routine.[30]

Trivia[edit]

 • Sol is the original Latin and the actual scientific name for Earth's sun. This designation and name has actually been used instead of "Solar System" in many science fiction novels.
 • Sol is also an emblem option in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.
