South America is a continent on the planet Earth.
History[edit]
Uncontacted peoples[edit]
South America's Amazon rainforest was home to several cultures, with the Khabnathwa people being the last of these uncontacted cultures by the 22nd century.[2]
Marsman scandal[edit]
At some point during the 22nd century, an unidentified man from Mars was leading a crowd-funded habitat-ship project when he realized that there was no hope that the project would succeed. He took the funds and fled to the Amazon to live among the Khabnathwa people. Here, the man lived in an off-the-grid mansion and convinced the Khabnathwa people that he was their god-king. Ultimately, he was discovered and presumably taken into custody, though the damage to the Khabnathwa culture had already been done.[2]
The Rain Forest Wars[edit]
South America was the site of the Rain Forest Wars during 2162. The war was fought between the United Nations, and the Koslovics and Frieden rebel factions.[3] The wars bred famine and destruction and when paired with post-Interplanetary War population surges, threatened to destabilize the economy in 2170.[4]
Human-Covenant war[edit]
Just prior to the Battle for Earth, a group of Spartan 1.1s led by Kevin Morales had hid a Pelican in Chile.[5]
Post Covenant-War[edit]
In late 2557 or early 2558, as an increasing number of asylum seekers from the former Covenant immigrated to Earth, cities like Rio de Janiero's population swelled as a result. Later, a Sangheili terrorist attempted to detonate a tactical nuclear weapon in the city, but was ultimately stopped by UNSC special operations forces.[6]
Geography[edit]
Locations[edit]
Economy[edit]
One known space elevator is located in South America, the Quito Space Tether in Ecuador.[7]
