When the [[Covenant Empire|Covenant]] attacked Ariel, Charles was seated in the transmissions bay of the colony, and died of the shock of seeing the Covenant attack. A female civilian then pushed his body off the chair to send a distress signal to the UNSC. The [[Orbital Drop Shock Trooper|ODSTs]] who arrived later found his body, and noticed no signs of violent death, coming to the conclusion he had, in fact, died of fright.<ref name="hell"/>
