The bar he worked at was just down the street from a UNSC Armed Forces recruitment center, and it was this fact that led Rion Forge to him when she couldn't muster up the ability to walk in and enlist. He asked her for ID, but after she admitted she wasn't old enough to drink he told her to leave. Hal was rebuffed by Bjorn Birger, who invited Rion to join he and others in a booth.[1]
