Someone said that the grunts can use magnums. This is not yet proven so it will not be put it.
:I believe Dojorkan added most of those. He's a modder who's tested that kind of stuff out. You can find a lot of his screenshots at HBO. --Dragonclaws 05:01, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes but modding shouldn't count for factual Grunt weapon compatibility in this wiki. In the Arbiter's level you can get Jackals to glitch and use carbines with a shield but that doesn't mean we should put it in their page. That goes for the Rocket Launcher to. Bungie never intended Grunts to use these in Halo 1 or 2. --Justin Time 23:53, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

You misunderstand. Its not liek I did some kind of stuff that makes them hold it. They already have the animation for it, made by bungie. The jackals using a carbine isnt a glitch. They are allowed to use it because bungie made the animation for it. Even though they didnt make it Look perfect. In normal gameplay, you can give magnums and rockets to grunts.
Did anyone else notice the glowing grunts in the five minute firefight that was set on Corvette. FATGUNN 02:05, August 28, 2010 (UTC)
On Sacred Icon, keep a grunt alive until you encounter the flood. and swap a magnum for whatever current weapon they have. While we are at it, Jackals can use BRs, Magnums, and SMGs on there.
For the rocket launcher, just keeep your grunts alive until you get the only Rocket on Uprising.--Dojorkan 06:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Whats up with the whole Grunts speaking English thing?
The stats section states that a Grunt is 5'6 tall, and weighs well over 100kg. Errmmm... No. Regardless of the fact that it is a 'Blame Stosh' picture from the BWU, it still shows a grunt about half the size of a civilian human. That civilian is not 12 feet tall, nor is the grunt best part of 6. Grunts, going by that picture are around 3 feet tall. Where the hell did this "5'6" figure come from? Being 3ft tall, they will not be over 100kg either.Thebigyeash 14:22, September 6, 2010 (UTC)

Do they ever explain why the grunts speak English?
:The image you linked is using perspectives to achieve that shot; the Grunt is farther while the civilian is closest to the camera. Also, the Halo Encyclopedia confirmed this. Yeah and bungie knows we love grunts witty one liners... and then killing them
Is it mentioned anywhere on the article that in the first Halo there were two different looking types of grunts (the ones with the straight pointing tanks and masks that go outwards to the sides, this being the type that also appeared in 2 and 3; and also the ones with curved tanks and masks that pointed more back)--Black kille 21:28, 6 January 2011 (EST)

Well, I think that when you're the Arbiter and you hear them speak English, that's just so you can understand, I mean come on not everything in the game has to be perfect they can be altered to fit in with all the story and Halo Universe. Like in the books the SPI Armour has a built in translator. In Halo: Combat Evolved you could hear them speak English just for the humour so you could understand. But speaking Halo Universe wise, they would have been speaking in their language etc.-- Joshua 029 13:09, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
RvB: Animated
Yes, the Arbiter obviously understands what the Grunts are saying, since they're both members of the Covenant, so they just put all the language into English (or whatever localisation you're in) so that it can be understood. I, personally, think this is a cop-out. I liked the old Covenant language from Halo 1.
Why does the gallery still feature the image from Red versus Blue: Animated? I removed it about a year ago, but it was restored. Doesn't it technically count as fan art? Yes... but, according to TFoR, "their speech--even with the new translation software-- was an odd combination of high-pitched squeaks, guttural barks, and growls." == Ancient stepping-stones? ==

4th paragraph here. Quote:
Inaccurate Main Image
"Their relics are not restricted to Halo 04. The Aztec-esque stones of C'ort Azur, the arches and weathered inscriptions of Sigma Octanus, the intricate caverns and 3km holographic dome beneath ONI's Reach complex, the ancient stepping-stones of the Grunt's homeworld, and the Prophet's own claim to have evolved on an abandoned Forerunner planet, the revelation that their Ark (whatever that entails) exists on Earth, not to mention the countless installations undoubtedly pilfered to allow the Covenant to have achieved their current levels of technology, all give testament to this galaxy's permeation."
I'm reverting the main image, because it is of a Covenant Storm grunt, and not a normal grunt. It does not represent the species as a whole. Even though it is our most recent image of a grunt, does not mean we need to use it. SUPPLYPAD COMPLETE 21:10, 15 August 2012 (EDT)

It's still kind of up in the air as to whether the Storm Grunts in Halo 4 are just redesigned Grunts or a sub-species/mutation - developers seem to be suggesting the latter. If so, they're sort of like Skirmishers - still Kig-Yar, just not the mainstream Kig-Yar SPARTAN-347 22:01, 15 August 2012 (EDT)

Anyone know, or feel like inquiring, where the HBO guys got this information? Or should we just trust it as canon, given their close relationship with Bungie? Apparently the Grunt homeworld bit was on the page as early as December 2003. (The bit about the Ark was added well after Halo 2, though.)
I agree with Spartacus. When the Elites were updated in Reach, so was their main image. Even though they were bulkier and meaner looking. It's still the same thing. The jackals in CE are still Jackals in Halo Reach. --ADinoSupremacist 14:12, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

I agree that we should use the most recent depiction of the species, unless of course it is directly claimed by 343i that the Halo 4 Unggoy are a subspecies, which at this stage seems unlikely. --Cyrannian 15:23, 30 October 2012 (EDT)
:It shouldn't be up in the air. They're clearly an entirely different species. The Unggoy in all previous Halo games had chitinous exoskeletons, like arthropods. The Grunts in Halo 4 have rough skin with scutes. It is literally impossible for them to be members of the same species. This isn't a matter of two subspecies, one with dense feathers and a more pronounced beak and one with scutes and ornamental feathers. This is a matter of two totally separate species with completely different skeletal structures, one with a full chitinous exoskeleton and one with osteoderms. Compare the Halo Reach, Halo 4, and Halo 5 Grunts. The Halo Reach and 5 Grunts clearly have articulated exoskeletons like arthropods, whereas the Halo 4 Grunts are more like reptiles. This was an attempted retcon/redesign of the species, and I'm just glad that 343i seems to have returned to Bungie's original vision for the Unggoy and given the Halo 5 ones exoskeletons, if the image in this article is accurate. --Eipok Kruden 05:21, 21 June, 2015 (PDT)

Sources
"Grunts are essentially a slave race, who obey the other Covenant races out of fear, because they have no political power in Covenant society. However, within the Grunt community there is a strong hatred of other species, especially Jackals, and a belief that someday a dynamic Grunt leader will lead them to freedom on a methane-rich paradise world. It has been indicated that at some time in the Covenant's history, there was a Grunt Rebellion, which was quelled, thanks in part to an Arbiter who was named during that period for that purpose. Once the grunt rebellion was defeated, the grunt species was "dumbed down" by the covenant so that such an act could not be repeated.

Due to their low status, Grunts are not permitted by the Elites to possess family names. They do value their ties to their offspring, but are usually separated from their families at an early age by the requirements of their service to the Covenant. The Grunts resent this greatly, but are unable to muster any response."

Bungie probably was testing out different armor designs in halo 1. If you look closely, Jackals and Elites also have 2 different armor designs in halo 1, but if you look in halo 2, both the Jackals and the Elites have only one type of armor design. Bungie must of chose the one that looked best and kept it for halo 2. Do realize that halo 2 took longer to make. They had to delete a lot of other stuff besides the different armor designs. --HaloRocks! 03:55, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

I always thought that the curled back design was to simulate the amount of methane used by the Grunt. When not curled back, the Grunt's methane supply is full, but as the methane is used, the methane pack curles back until it is resupplied. That's my theory anyways. -Anonymous

The image you linked is using perspectives to achieve that shot; the Grunt is farther while the civilian is closest to the camera. Also, the Halo Encyclopedia confirmed this. For more clarification, see this.- 5əb'7aŋk(7alk) 14:29, September 6, 2010 (UTC)

Unusual event[edit]

I was playing firefight Reach when I found several spec ops grunts using plasma rifles. Glitch? Bug? Blahmarrow thinks not. So what was it?--Blahmarrow 20:13, 25 October 2010 (EDT)

I'd say its just a gameplay feature. It happens to me pretty frequently on coop, especially with Thunderstorm on. -- Specops306 Autocrat Qur'a 'Morhek 22:39, 25 October 2010 (EDT)

Variants[edit]

Is it mentioned anywhere on the article that in the first Halo there were two different looking types of grunts (the ones with the straight pointing tanks and masks that go outwards to the sides, this being the type that also appeared in 2 and 3; and also the ones with curved tanks and masks that pointed more back)--Black kille 21:28, 6 January 2011 (EST)

Yeah - we call them "straightbacks" and "curlbacks". Bungie intended another variant to be in Combat evolved, the cylindral-shaped "flatbacks"-- Forerunner 02:55, 7 January 2011 (EST)

RvB: Animated[edit]

Why does the gallery still feature the image from Red versus Blue: Animated? I removed it about a year ago, but it was restored. Doesn't it technically count as fan art? Curlback grunts[edit]

Why is there no mention of them in the article any longer? mrsupersauce 01:27, 25 June 2011 (EST)

Unggoy Philosophies?[edit]

According to the Halo Encyclopedia, one of the simple philosophies of the Unggoy is "When in doubt, flee!", but yet another simple philosophy from one of the Halo novels (not sure which one it is, nor can I remember), is "When in doubt, shoot!". If anyone could shed any light on this, like where did this other philosophy came from what book, and whatever else, and maybe someone could adjust or address the issue. They say both of them. The latter one comes from Halo: The Flood (iirc, no?) and the former I believe came from Halo 3. Vegerot goes RAWR! Vegerot (talk) 21:45, 17 September 2011 (EDT)

second, third or even fourth?[edit]

Inaccurate Main Image[edit]

I'm reverting the main image, because it is of a Covenant Storm grunt, and not a normal grunt. It does not represent the species as a whole. Even though it is our most recent image of a grunt, does not mean we need to use it. SUPPLYPAD COMPLETE 21:10, 15 August 2012 (EDT)

Why? What makes it different than other Unggoy, other than wearing different armor? It's still an Unggoy, and the image is the most recent canonical image we have, so it should be used.--Spartacus (Talk | Contribs) 21:58, 15 August 2012 (EDT)
Just look at them. One kind as an exoskeleton, the other has skin and scutes. They're different species.--Eipok Kruden 05:27, 21 June, 2015 (PDT)

The interactive guide makes it clear that the Halo 4 grunts and just grunts.ArchedThunder 23:38, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

I agree that we should use the most recent depiction of the species, unless of course it is directly claimed by 343i that the Halo 4 Unggoy are a subspecies, which at this stage seems unlikely. --Cyrannian 15:23, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

It shouldn't be up in the air.

Tier 4[edit]

Where exactly is it stated that Unggoy were Tier 4 before the firing of the Array? The visual guide states that ecological collapse due to overindustrialisation happened post reseeding.

The Bestiarum: "It is still recovering from preactivation environmental collapse caused by massive global overindustrialization. It seems that prior to their incorporation into the [Covenant], the Unggoy had yet to [reattain] Tier 4 technologies." The visual guide doesn't mention when the catastrophe happened.

Subtypes[edit]

After seeing the different subtypes of Kig-Yar get proper names (Ruuhtian = Halo Trilogy and Reach Jackals, Ibie'shan = Halo 4 Jackals and T'vaoan = Skirmishers) I would like to see the same clarification happen for the Unggoy, as the Trilogy/Reach Grunts are obviously vastly different from the Halo 4 ones. The differences are even greater than those of the Kig-Yar subtypes. I for one would be eternally grateful for a confirmed differentiation between the types. Graffix[edit]

Guys, dontcha think we should change the main picture of the Minor Grunt to a Minor Grunt from HCEA? Like, I think it's more detailed that way.

Main image.[edit]

Is there any particular reason why the Infinite Grunt hasn’t replaced the Halo 2 Anniversary Grunt in the main image section? It seems to me like it’s supposed to be the same type of Grunt. There is already a render being used on the Unggoy Conscript page that can be used. ArchedThunder (talk) 04:19, March 13, 2022 (EDT)
