| == Background ==
| |
| Although they do not appear in any of the Halo games, the Covenant Drone Engineers have been mentioned in Halo fiction several times and were fully realized in design terms. Their combination of insect organics and cybernetics makes them a unique-looking creature in the Covenant bestiary. And since they can actually fly, with the aid of gas-filled bladders on their backs, they behave differently, too. This species can be biomechanically and cybernetically altered to suit specific tasks, other than engineering and maintenance.

| Edit:
| |
| The engineer race has appeared in the newest Halo game in the series, Halo 3 ODST. These covenant are non-combat, but do bestow over-shields to nearby enemies. One engineer managed to merge with the superintendent of the city, and becomes an important character in the game, named "Virgil", after the superintendent itself. Engineers wear armor with shielding in ODST and will attempt to flee from incoming fire, making a pitiful cooing noise as they are killed.
