- "You, Ship Master Voro 'Mantakree, are now Fleet Master Voro Nar 'Mantakree. Lead your newly assembled battle group to this world. Destroy the demons and deny them their prize at all costs."
- — Imperial Admiral Xytan 'Jar Wattinree promoting Voro 'Mantakree to fleetmaster[1]
Fleetmaster,[3] occasionally rendered as fleet master, is a title given to individuals in command of fleets within the Covenant military.[1] On the eve of the Great Schism, the High Prophet of Truth granted the title to several Jiralhanae.[2]
Rank
One of the varying degrees of command titles within the Covenant fleet, the title of fleetmaster was given to the officer in command of a fleet. While fleetmaster is distinct from the title of Supreme Commander, both ranks gave their holders similar responsibilities for a fleet or a contingent of fleets.[4] The title was originally only assigned to Sangheili officers within the Covenant fleet, though towards the end of the Human-Covenant War, the High Prophet of Truth promoted several Jiralhanae to the title of fleetmaster in preparation for his plans to remove the Sangheili from the Covenant.[2] Following the empire's collapse during the Great Schism, some Sangheili still held the title of fleetmaster.[5][6]
Wearing golden combat harnesses to signify their command position,[7] fleetmasters normally utilize a large warship as their flagship, such as a CAS-class assault carrier or ORS-class heavy cruiser.[8] Following the fall of the Covenant, some fleetmasters have found that ancient Carrack merchant cruisers are surprisingly capable and resilient troop and materiel transports in modern conflicts.[6] When Voro 'Mantakree was promoted from major to a fleetmaster, Imperial Admiral Xytan 'Jar Wattinree bestowed a middle name upon him, making his name Voro Nar 'Mantakree.[1] However, a middle name is not given to all fleetmasters. Fleetmasters can order tweaks on starships for their fleet during the ship's construction.[9]
Known fleetmasters
- Rtas 'Vadum – Shipmaster of CAS-class assault carrier Shadow of Intent; fleetmaster of the Fleet of Retribution.[10]
- Thel 'Vadamee – Former shipmaster of CAS-class assault carrier Seeker of Truth; former fleetmaster of the Fleet of Particular Justice.[11]
- Voro Nar 'Mantakree – Shipmaster of ORS-class heavy cruiser Incorruptible, who led a fleet to follow Bloodied Spirit to Onyx.[1]
- Kantar 'Utaralee – Fleetmaster of an unidentified fleet,[12] perhaps the remnants of the Fleet of Valiant Prudence.
- Rojka 'Kaasan – Shipmaster of ORS-class heavy cruiser Unwavering Discipline; former fleetmaster of Rak's fleet.[13]
- Arkad Nar 'Kulul - Fleetmaster of an unidentified fleet, which the assault carrier Enduring Conviction belonged to.[14]
- Unidentified shipmaster – Shipmaster of a CAS-class assault carrier; fleetmaster of the Fleet of Righteous Vigilance.[15]
Behind the scenes
The difference between the ranks of fleetmaster and Supreme Commander is unknown. Halo: The Flood and the Halo Encyclopedia have referred to Thel 'Vadamee as the fleetmaster of the Fleet of Particular Justice, though most sources referred to him as the Supreme Commander of the fleet. It is unknown if the references to 'Vadamee being a fleetmaster are incorrect or if he held both titles.
