The M95 Lance Guided Missile Weapon System[1] is a surface-to-air missile battery used by the UNSC.
Design details
Each battery can hold up to six missiles. The battery uses a universal weapons emplacement base similar to the one used by the M71 Anti-Aircraft Gun. The M95 GMWS is a smaller counterpart to the M97 Lance, a missile battery designed for both atmospheric and space engagements.[1]
Operational history
In August 2552, during the Siege of New Alexandria, the forces defending the city had set up two M95 Lance missile batteries in a park. However, they were overrun and unable to use the batteries against the Covenant. In order to allow civilian evacuation transports to escape the city with thousands of people on board, SPARTAN-B312 retook the batteries and fired them at an SDV-class heavy corvette holding position over the city's starport, severely damaging the craft and forcing it to retreat. As a result, three transports were able to get to safety with their passengers. The corvette the missile batteries fired upon was seen flying away at a steep angle, indicating that the damage the missile batteries caused may have caused it to crash.[2]
Trivia
This weapon emplacement was originally referred to as the "M950 Lance" on Halo Waypoint.[3]
