James was a genetically, intellectually, and physically gifted child chosen for the [[SPARTAN-II]] project. At some point prior to that date, members of Tango Company brutally beat James during such an exercise and then claimed he had simply fallen down a flight of stairs in a one-story jail while they were escorting him from one cell to another.
