Commanding Officers can lead companies, battalions, divisions, brigades, regiments, or platoons. The general word to refer to this is 'unit'. Commanding officer is not a rank; it is a billet. When you say 'Lieutenant' and you are referring to the Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, you had better clarify which rank of Lieutenant you mean; there are two ranks of Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant (paygrade O-1), and First Lieutenant (paygrade O-2). The Army and Marine Corps more or less use the same nomenclature when it comes to referring to Commanding Officers/Commanding Generals; there are subtle differences. In the Marine Corps, battalions are commanded by Lieutenant Colonels. If there are no Lieutenant Colonels available, then a Major will be appointed. A Captain is not usually in command of a battalion; instead, they usually hold the XO billet position. If the commanding officer is incapacitated, then a Captain, if a Captain is holding the XO billet, may serve as a commanding officer over a battalion; however, this is not the norm. Captains usually command companies. <span style="color:#666666">Smoke My pageMy talkMy Editcount</span> 06:24, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
