Aleria is a human "Third World" Outer Colony in the Elduros system with a large mining industry. The planet's average temperature is 33°C.[1] Beginning in 2453,[1] a drought lasting a century devastated the planet and allegedly killed half of its inhabitants. The drought caused many of the planet's colonists to become smugglers to allow them to earn money and to counter food shortages.[2] Arris Le and Haisal Wari were two known smugglers that were affiliated with Alerian "courier guilds". Adding to these difficulties was the collapse of the Alerian mining union Mols'Desias in 2554, causing many colonists to face substantial debt and unemployment.[3][4] Because of the colony's plight, the mean age of Aleria's inhabitants is only 45 years.[1]

As most Alerians are unable to afford modern spacecraft, they often use outdated vessels such as Bactrian-class freighters for interplanetary transport.[5]

Trivia

The colony is likely named after the French town of the same name.
