I have a question about this discrepancy. In my ''Halo: The Fall of Reach'', John is never referred to as a Chief Petty Officer in the prologue. Most of the time, he is just called "the Chief", and at the end when he is on the bridge, the narrator says of the Captain that "He glanced at the Master Chief with haunted eyes." My main problem is that I own the 2010 version, so this detail may have been changed in the 2011 version (the definitive edition). Can anyone verify if there is any mention of "Chief Petty Officer" in the definitive edition's prologue? There is no such change mentioned on [[List of changes in Halo novel reprints|this page]]. If they didn't change it in the 2011 version, then John is a Master Chief Petty Officer in 2535, and he could very well hold this rank as early as 2526 during the Battle of Circinius IV (As far as I can tell, he has no appearance between the Battle of Chi Ceti IV and the Battle of Jericho VII except for his short screentime in Homecoming). So we may either debunk this discrepancy or confirm it, and in the latter case the change of rank should be pointed out on the "list of changes in Halo novel reprints." :"the Chief" is a short title [http://www.halopedia.org/index.php?title=Chief_petty_officer&oldid=1017657 apparently normally reserved] for those with the rank of Chief Petty Officer, i.e. Chief Mendez throughout the novels Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx. As per the article entry, it is simply an indication that John was a CPO at the time of the event and not a MCPO, the rationale being that he was constantly referred as "the Chief" throughout and that the one mention of "Master Chief" as you correctly identified is a mistake of the author.— [[User:Subtank|subtank]] 22:34, 12 August 2014 (EDT)
