The Forerunners were an ancient race of enlightened beings whose empire -- known as the ecumene -- encompassed three million fertile worlds in the Milky Way Galaxy approximately 100,000 years ago. The Forerunners were the creators and builders of many significant installations, including the Halo Array, the Ark, and the Shield Worlds, as well as numerous lesser artifacts later found on many worlds.

The term glassing, more formally known as plasma bombardment, is used to refer to the act by which a Covenant ship or ships bombard a planet from orbit by using heavy plasma weaponry. The process of glassing a planet begins when a fleet has achieved air and space superiority on an enemy-controlled world. The specifics of the glassing process vary depending on the strategic significance of the planet or the orders of the Fleet Master.

Admiral Preston Jeremiah Cole (service number 03956-26127-PC) was a UNSC Naval officer during both the Insurrection and the Human-Covenant War. Cole is best known for being the commander of the majority of the UNSC Navy from 2525 until 2543 and for his role in creating the Cole Protocol, a central UNSC law of the Human-Covenant War. A military genius, he defeated the Covenant in every major battle he fought and his battle record was considered to be without equal, even more impressive than that of the SPARTAN-IIs.

The UNSC ''Pillar of Autumn'', (hull classification symbol C-709), was a Halcyon-class light cruiser in the UNSC Navy. It was informally referred to as the ''Autumn'', and, in some cases, the ''Pillar''. Prior to the Fall of Reach the ''Pillar of Autumn'' was selected to support Operation: RED FLAG, a SPARTAN-II mission to capture Covenant leaders. Captain Jacob Keyes was placed in command. The operation was forestalled by the Covenant assault on Reach; the cruiser carried some of the few UNSC survivors and fled the system having lost most of its intended SPARTAN-II passengers.
