The M95 "Lance" Guided Missile Weapon System, alternatively called the missile battery,[1] is a surface-to-air missile battery used by the UNSC.
Design details
Each battery can hold up to six missiles. The battery uses an universal weapons emplacement base similar to the one used by the M71 Anti-Aircraft Gun.
Variants
M97 Guided Missile Weapon System
The M97 "Lance" Guided Missile Weapon System is both aesthetically and operationally similar to the M95 GMWS, in that both weapons fire in salvos, uses the same ammunition, and the same firing turret launcher head. The only difference is that it lacks the large base unit common to both the M95 GMWS and the M71 Anti-Aircraft Gun. Instead, the M97 is mounted atop turrets on starship hulls for defensive capability against enemy aircraft.[1]
Operational history
In August 2552, during the Siege of New Alexandria, two M95 missile batteries were used by SPARTAN-B312 to cripple a Covenant SDV-class heavy corvette holding station over the city, thus allowing three civilian transports to escape the city. [2]
The UNSC Infinity had several of the M97 missile batteries mounted on its dorsal surface. After the ship crash landed inside the shield world Requiem in July 2557, John-117 had to reactivate the batteries to help repel Covenant forces.[3] When the Infinity came back to Requiem in 2558, some of the M97 missile batteries were deployed on a select few UNSC bases on Requiem's inner surface, such as Galileo Base.[4]
