Eric S. Nylund is an American novelist and professional technical writer who has contributed extensively to the Halo universe. He is noted in particular for his three Halo novels, beginning with Halo: The Fall of Reach, the first book in the series. Born in 1964, Nylund started his writing career in 1995 and served as Narrative Design Director for Microsoft for 14 years, until his resignation in July 2013.[1]

Eric Nylund was born in 1964, and spent his youth in California. He has a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a master's degree in Chemical Physics. In the 1990s, he was hired by Microsoft as a writer for the company's multimedia properties. He later moved on to serve as lead of Microsoft's Narrative Design team, tasked with world-building, developing character and story bibles, preparing materials for marketing, writing game manuals and scripts, consulting voice casting and directing voice actors, and coordinating with MS localization, legal, and geopolitical departments.[2] He has written novels, backstory and scripts for several games, including Halo, Crimson Skies and Gears of War. Crimson Skies was written along with fellow Halo writer Eric S. Trautmann. Cole in the book Halo: Evolutions - Essential Tales of the Halo Universe and helped write Catherine Halsey's journal and classified documents included in the Limited and Legendary editions of Halo: Reach.[5]

Nylund is not currently contracted to write future books for the Halo series. However, he has, in the past, expressed interest in telling other Halo stories in the future, particularly that of Gray Team.
