As Maldini completed and logged her inspection, she was attacked by a stowaway [[flood infection form]] and was overtaken by the parasite. Serina, having begun the early stages of [[rampancy]], failed to take full measures and instead locked the resultant combat form in the cryo-bay for study. After two days of study and observation, Serina witnessed the infected enter the [[Flood carrier form|carrier stage]] and spawn more infection forms. Able to absorb a host's knowledge, the Flood utilized Maldini's knowledge of [[cryo chamber]] codes to awaken and infect more crew members.
