The Type-26BZ is a specialized "ordained" variant of the {{Pattern|Is'belox|Banshee}}. [[Sesa 'Refumee's heretic faction|Followers]] of [[Sesa 'Refumee]] removed the cowlings from their standard ''Is'belox''-pattern Banshees to reveal the glowing purple lights and silver metal of the craft's internal [[Forerunner]]-derived mechanisms. They also bestowed upon their Banshees golden-brown colors intended to represent [[Sanghelios|their homeworld]].{{Ref/Site|Id=HereticBansheeToy|URL=https://web.archive.org/web/20070126131232/http://www.joyridestudios.com/halo2_7_heretic_banshee.asp|Site=Joyride Studios|Page=Heretic Banshee|D=14|M=02|Y=2022}} The Type-26BZ is otherwise nearly identical to standard ''Is'belox''-pattern Banshees. The ''Te'ved''-pattern Banshee is the "heretic" Banshee featured in the multiplayer component of ''[[Halo 2: Anniversary]]'' - the heretic Banshee seen in the game's campaign mode is the {{Pattern|Drailaac|Banshee}}. The vehicle behaves identically in-game to the standard Banshee. The design was not given a formal designation difference until a 2015 [[Halo Waypoint]] universe entry.{{Ref/Reuse|universe}}

Banshees must steal souls from people to continue their existence. The high-pitched sound made by the Covenant Banshee is a reference to this, especially while performing tight maneuvers making it easy to hear them before one sees them. This also fits the theme of Covenant vehicles, with the exceptions of the [[Excavator]]s, being named after supernatural entities.
