Task forces are a fleet composition element employed by the UNSC Navy.

A task force is an organization of Covenant ships, usually organized on a temporary basis and for a specific mission. A task force is smaller than a Fleet. It is the rough equivalent of a UNSC Battle Group in terms of the number of ships. It is commanded by a Elite Zealot with the title of Fleet Master.

Composition
The amount of ships in a task force range from a handful to several dozen. Possibly due to their transient nature, Covenant task forces are not named, unlike Covenant fleets.
Task forces are typically interchangeable with battle groups, being ad-hoc fighting forces formed from Naval tactical formations. In at least one instance, a task force was formed as a subdivision of a battle group - in 2526, Task Force Yama - a force consisting of three squadrons of Prowlers - split off from Battle Group X-Ray under the orders of Vice Admiral Preston Cole. Yama was commanded by Captain Halima Ascot.

Some task forces were organised into a "wolf pack" configuration consisting of only Halberds. These "wolf pack" units carried no Marine complements.
Known Task Forces
*A Covenant task force was sent to Harvest in 2531. It numbered less than a dozen vessels.

Purpose
*Another Covenant task force, referred to as Regret's Fleet, was sent to Earth, led by the Prophet of Regret. Regret's intent was to claim the Forerunner Artifact buried under the planet, but it was defeated in the Battle of Earth. It consisted of two Assault Carriers and thirteen CCS-class Battlecruisers.
Conjecture
In the real world, task forces are typically formed on a temporary basis comprised of multiple units with the purpose of accomplishing a single task or mission. While the full functions of task forces in the Halo universe have yet to be described, the purpose of Task Force Yama - to harass and disrupt Covenant supply lines in the early war - seems to keep the modern day interpretation of the concept more-or-less intact.

Known task forces
*Voro Nar 'Mantakree was put in charge of a task force by Imperial Admiral Xytan 'Jar Wattinree to pursue the captured Bloodied Spirit. Most of this Fleet was destroyed in the Battle of Onyx.
